I keep my bank account numbers and passwords in a kwallet file. I would like to buy some external usb flash disk as a backup to keep the file inside. if there is an encrypted way in linux to store the data inthere?
For example: Buy a stick that encrypts the data Encrypt the data by using some filesystem. Does this work on every usb stick?
I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.
I've created encryption systems on servers, but nearly always I have stored the password somewhere on the machine itself. The file is always 0600 to the relevant user, but a systematic analysis of my system could easily find the scripts that invoke decryption and discover the password. (The most blatant example of this is mounting SMB shares with the "-o credential_file" option where both the username and password are plain-text. In the cases where I've used this, the security of the share hasn't particularly mattered.)
Soon I might be faced with storing "patient health information" (PHI in the healthcare world) whose privacy is heavily regulated by the provisions of the US law called HIPAA. I've been thinking about creating an encrypted partition to hold the PHI, but I need a highly fault-tolerant method for obtaining the key from a different machine than tha server itself. At first, I thought about running a script using scp and shared keys to copy the key from the remote, use it to decrypt the partition, then erase it. I'd like to be able to do this with a pipe; otherwise I'll write the key in a non-persistent location like /dev/shm.
I need more than one machine to make this work to ensure I can obtain the key when needed (like at boot). One solution is to place copies of the key on multiple servers and try each of them until I find it. A more elegant solution would place the key in a DNS TXT record. I suspect I could use LDAP for this as well, but OpenLDAP and I have never really been on speaking terms. So does this make sense? I presume I can write a bash script to do all this at boot. Most of what will be stored in this partition is the PostgreSQL database in /var/lib/pgsql and perhaps some other files.
My understanding of encrypted file systems is that they are only encrypted when unmounted. When mounted they must be as visible to the operating system as an unencrypted partition. I suppose you could apply encryption to every single disk transaction, but that would require knowing the key all the time, and would seem to add a lot of overhead.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:
[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`
And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser,password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.
Is it possible to have the passwd file for svnserve encrypted, rather than store the usernames/passwords in plain text?

Needless to say, the ability to backup my user data to a second HDD is an important task to me. I'm currently using Back in Time to accomplish this and all is well. However, there is one thing missing. I can't locate my Tomboy Notes data within the file system. I expected to see a "hidden" folder in my /home, but do not. Where this information is stored so I can back it up as well?

I am trying to setup my ubuntu machine to automatically log some data I am trying to collect and write the data to a flash drive. I have everything setup so that when the machine boots up it starts that logging process. The problem I am having is that sometimes (not always) ubuntu creates a directory with the same path that I expect my flash drive to mount to i.e., /media/data/ then my flash drive instead mounts to /media/data_/. I need to know the path of the flash drive so I can store my data on it.

I would like to use a USB key to hold the passphrase for an encrypted /Data partition. A forum search turned up only using that method for / which requires initrd. That's not what I'm after.In openSUSE 11.4 I want to boot normally and then automatically unlock the /Data partition only if the USB key is inserted. I'm assuming this would require some kind of automounting after or during the boot process.

It has somehow frozen my machine in so mighty way, that it apparently corrupted a directory with majority of my pictures , which now appears to be empty .My home lies on a separate partition, its encrypted aand using btrfs and I am using kubuntu 10.10. So, could anyone give me some clues how to unencrypt my home partition, that i could obtain an image of partition or whatever else usable for photorec to check for pictures?

I do have my old login name and passwd in a book. How can I open the data it was the old encrypted home directory. I have an icon "Acess your private Data" and something called link to Acess Your private data. There I can read link (broken) so the broke link is sorted out, as i do have now a directory in my home with the same name as it has been, /home/coconews/ and that is fine
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I was forced to hard reset my computer a couple of times (mostly out of frustration) and due to my idiocy i was confronted with the standard Kernel Panic message at bootup. I tried running an fsck from live cd which corrected a bunch of errors but to no avail (as far as getting rid of the Kernel Panic msg). I then tried to mount the filesystem by accessing it from live cd (and later even installed ubuntu on a small leftover partition to get rid of the annoying live cd lag) but it says that I don't have access to my home or root folder. Mounting from command line gave the same issue.
So now to the question. Is there a general procedure to access data in my corrupt filesystem if it is encrypted?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently recovered from an HDD failure on my Drobo. One of the disks died and corrupted the entire array (which is not supposed to happen). I have since managed to copy the data off onto smaller disks and after replacing the failed drive, have copied everything back.
Now that im up and running again, i was wondering how this situation would play out on encrypted disks, or in the case of a drobo a large encrypted partition (as you cannot encrypt the entire array).
Would i still be able to recover the data if i were to encrypt it? It is a 4.2TB array, and i assume that I would need to copy the data in its entirety to recover it, so using multiple smaller disks would be out of the question right?
