I reinstalled gnome-panel but still the problem persists......I tried all options gnome-panel --help commands nothing works for me....I tried to boot in recovery mode also and terminal I am able to access execute commands.....but upper and lower panel are empty and I can not add any new stuff to them

In total, linux 32bit can address 4GB virtual addresses. Does this meant that 1GB of physical memory is already mapped to 1GB of kernel space and Linux only shows the remaining 3GB physical memory left for the user in the above command.
I did some searching on the internet and found some articles related to this, but it only confused me further since some articles suggest 4GB is the upper limit with mentioning whether it's virtual or physical memory, some bring in the concept of PAE, etc. I'm relative new to Linux's memory management, so it'd be really helpful if someone could answer this.

I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a system with one 2.6.35 kernel, one 2.6.38 kernel I built from a koji src rpm and 1 rawhide 2.6.39 kernel I installed directly with yum. Now that a newer 2.6.35 is out, I'd like to yum update my 2.6.35 kernel so I'll have those two in the 2.6.35 range. But the problem is those newer kernels (38 and 39) make yum think there's no update that's available because they have higher version numbers than the new 2.6.35.12-90 kernel. Is there someway I can make yum update to 2.6.35.12-90 anyway? I was thinking I could download the kernel and kernel-devel rpm files for 2.6.35.12-90 and do the yum install for them off the hard drive, would that work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP, Vista and Ubuntu (10.04) all installed on my single hard drive. I re-installed XP and then ran the Vista CD to repair the Vista bootloader so that I could boot into XP and Vista. I can't figure out how to boot into Ubuntu now. I tried using EasyBCD (I believe an older version, maybe 1.72) to add Ubuntu to the Vista bootloader but I didn't have any luck. Ubuntu is in the menu, but when I select it, it goes to a screen that has GRUB in the upper left corner and does not load Ubuntu.

I have windows xp on my dell but I lost the drivers disk so I want to install linux Fedora 13 instead and wipe the windows xp. I burned the iso to a dvd and loaded up the live session user and used "Install to harddrive" but when I get to the partitioning window there is no harddrives to install to so I cant overwrite the windows drive (/C:)..
View 1 Replies View RelatedI set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!
SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume.It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with the grub boot menu. I have a dual boot system, Windows XP 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Windows was preexisting when I installed Ubuntu. The install went fine but when I restarted, the Grub menu gives the option of the Windows boot loader but when I tab to that and press enter the screen goes black and the curser just blinks in the upper left corner...no XP boot. The XP drive is there as I can mount it from Ubuntu side but when I try to boot into it it does not seem to be there. What have I done and what can be done so that I can boot into the XP side?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI run alot of Linux running in memory. Mainly by PXE booting a kernel and the entire OS as the "initrd" file.
I have a RHEL6 image running as a VirtualBox guest and the entire OS (minimal) is contained withing 1GB of disk. I wan't to boot the entire /dev/sda1 "/" (its the only partition on the drive, no swap) as the initrd file and run everything from memory. But grub won't let me. So before I try and re-invent the wheel I thought to post here first.
Details. RHEL 6 as guest in VIrtual BOX. configured with 3Gb memory. HD is single partition and known as /dev/sda1.
at the grub console. I issue
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19.el6.x86_64 root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)
But the grub windows just freezes. Apparently it doesn't like the fact that I've referenced the entire partition (hd0,0) as the initrd. Any thoughts? Or any better boot loader like SYSLINUX?
BTW, I am not worried about the /etc/fstab mentioning /dev/sda1 at this point, I have a fix for that already. I would like to see grub load up the partition as an initrd.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?
I have been using for over a year now, my 64-bit computer first with Fedora 8 and now with Fedora 10 with 2Gb of RAM just fine. Today I purchased an extra 2Gb for the system and upon installation from the GRUB screen Fedora 10 simply won't boot. It does boot with 3Gb, and it doesn't matter which stick I use for the 3Gb configuration, or what slot do I put the sticks into the motherboard, however if I place the four sticks, F10 simply won't boot. I've looked at the release notes [URL] related to grub and changing the menu.lst. However, when I open the menu.lst per the instructions, it is blank (the file opens but there is no text in it). I also ran the sudo update-grub command but was never prompted to choose a the local version or maintainer's version.
Is there a way to go back and get back to the prompt to select the ""package maintainer's version"?
I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on a 32 bit laptop. I noticed that there seems to be a huge memory leak issue with Gnome shell. When I restart it, it is around 20 MB. But it keeps rising, and after around eight hours, I noticed it was around 250 MB! I found a solution online that said to simply restart the shell if the gnome-shell memory consumption becomes too large. While this is fine as a temporary solution, I am looking for a permanent one. Is there a way to minimize/prevent the memory leak other than waiting for the next version of Gnome 3?
