Ubuntu Networking :: Reduce Memory Footprint 9.04?

Apr 13, 2010

Just wondering if anyone has been successful at reducing the memory footprint of ubu 9.04. I have googled and read a number of "suggestion" but when applied had little or no effect on memory usage. So, after a complete new install, I am here asking this question. It is not a biggie but I am always looking for ways to reduce memory usage without sacrificing functionality.

I try to help others who would like to try and or convert to linux but often their systems have minimal memory and they don't or can't purchase more memory. So, being able to install ubuntu with a smaller memory footprint would be a good thing.

A basic ubuntu 9.04 seems to use about 300 Mb and for many that is too much. Hence, my quest for a smaller memory requirement. I have tried the ubuntu minimal cd's but they don't really achieve much in the memory area and they take so much longer to install since one uses the internet.

At any rate, if someone knows what services or programs that can be safely removed in order to achieve a better memory usage Oh, I have looked at numerous other distro's but seem to always return to ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Reduce Memory Usage / Footprint In 10.04?

May 15, 2010

I like a lot of the last Ubuntu editions, but my computer is a little old, and Ubuntu becomes slower each edition to me.

I get a AMD Athlon 2 GHz, with just 512 MB of RAM memory...

I tried to customize my last installation of 9.10, but i just mess up with the OS. Well, I googled for informations about reducing memory usage, as well others speed-ups but all them are a bit older. Does anyone know any resource about this?

Until now I just disabled startups programs, but i really want is remove packages and everything that I don't use.

One thing thats get me up set sometimes is that I run Win XP pro under a cryptographed partition, and even yet its very fast in my PC. I even tried Windows 7, and its was faster than the Ubuntus I installed.

When I'm using the 10.04, there is a lot of memory used by cache, specially Gnome...

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Unity - Manage Workspaces \ Still Miss The Good Visual Feedback And The Single Click Action That The Lower Panel (classic) Desktop Switcher Used?

May 21, 2011

I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

Debian :: Small Program / Large HDD Footprint

May 18, 2011

I have recently dropped to a command line to run a DB server. In attempting to write a bit of Python to do this process I went to install emacs using apt-get and noticed that the foot print of the install was going to be around 130 Mb. Likewise with a couple other programs the install size was going to be a lot larger than I anticipated. I was wondering how the footprint could be so large and is there a way to install software without this blow out. While I am happy to use vi or import the code from a desktop with a GUI I think this would be interesting to know.

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

OpenSUSE Install :: Virtual Memory / Resident Memory Of Server?

Feb 3, 2010

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

Hardware :: Why Dmesg / Grep Memory Gives Two Different Physical Memory Amounts

Oct 20, 2010

I am monitoring physical memory in a server I administer, and my hardware provider told me they had increased physical memory size to 4Gb... However, using several tools (free -m; top; dmesg | grep Memory; grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo I discovered that I actually have 3Gb, not 4... But, my doubt comes from the fact that dmesg | grem Memory tells me I have 3103396k/4194304k available The first number is effectively 3Gb, but the second one, is 4! so, why I am looking at this two different numbers?

Ubuntu :: Lower The Resolution Of All The Images In A Pdf?

May 9, 2010

How to lower the resolution of all the images in a pdf? I searched around and couldn't find an answer to this. I have a pdf file of a textbook that I use in school but each page is an image of 2 pages of the textbook (left page, right page when the book is opened) and each image is of a very high resolution. I downloaded pdftk and pdfedit but for such a simple problem, I'm having trouble. Is there any way to do this?

I have tried converting the 380 MB PDF file to PostScript but after an hour of doing that, it stopped, and the PostScript only had about 17 pages instead of the 733. So converting it back to a PDF file to utilize pdftk's algorithms would have been worthless. I know I could split up the pdf file into sections but I'd rather just scale down all the images, or make them mid quality PNGs or high quality JPGs just so the filesize can be halved.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Has A Much Lower Signal Than Mac OSX?

Jan 9, 2011

I installed 10.04 1st by making a partition with bootcamp on MacOSX.Then I formatted the partition according to Ubuntu's instructions. I didn't install rEFIt, because I prefer to just hit the alt (option) key.I made the necessary adjustments according to URL...Community Ubuntu Documentation - and everything seemed to be working fine.I upgraded to Maverick and everything seemed to be working fine aswell. But then I noticed, that the wireless signal keeps failing and I'm asked to put the password again and again..

I don't think this is due to the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, but I just noticed it recently, maybe because of the air humidity, the signal was stronger a few days a go.. don't know!!Is there anything I can do?Perhaps install a new driver, or another wificlient, like Wifi-Radar??

Software :: Accessing Memory Address Outside Standard Memory

Nov 22, 2009

I am writing an application that wants to access periphals registers outside the standard (allowed) memory area.

Doing so gets me "segmentation fault".

I know, this is natural behaviour.

One way of getting around this is writing the module which has to be loaded by linux. I will consider this some time later.

For now, I want to come to some quick result and allow linux or gcc compiler to write to those memory areas of periphals. Is there a direct way to do so?

Programming :: SHM Memory Counted As Cache Memory With Kernel 2.6.18?

Aug 25, 2010

Is that possible that SHM shared memory is counted as cache memory on Linux with kernel 2.6.18?If find it really odd since this memory is not file backed, but I have a piece of code that loads data using shm_open+mmap, and it generates an amount of cache memory in /proc/meminfo that corresponds exactly to the amount of shared memory (I load that data from a file but I am using posix_fadvise(fd,0,0,POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED) to ensure this file is not cached and I made sure that it is working as expected). As far as I know SHM memory was not tagged as cache memory with kernel 2.6.9.If it is the case it is really unfortunate since normally cache memory can be considered to be part of the "available" memory since it can be flushed promptly but this is clearly not the case with SHM memory... Is there an easy way to get the total amount of used SHM memory on a system?
