Slackware :: Mkisofs -iso-level 1 Converts To Lower Case Instead Of Upper Case?

Oct 28, 2010

Kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0
mkisofs 2.01

I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.

Quote:

-iso-level level
.........................
With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_).
...........................

However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.

Code:

root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt
Total translation table size: 0
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0
Total directory bytes: 0

Slackware :: Terminal Xterm Title Is Too Dynamic (title Doesn't Change Manually)

Aug 21, 2010

So when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.

This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "33]0;$*07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt

That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt

changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd. What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Move Windows By Dragging Their Title Bars - Cannot See Close "X" Button In The Title Bar

Feb 8, 2010

Everything worked 100% great untill I change color depth to 16 bits.I do not want 24 Bits, I want 16 Bits. I have good reasons. Never had this problem in Gutsy 7.10 ...I deeply regret in upgrading to 9.10 ...

My video card:

Gforce 7950 GX2

Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:

*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.

Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below

*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.

My xorg.conf file:

# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009

Ubuntu :: Change The Name That Appears In The Upper Right Corner On The Top Bar

Ubuntu :: Lower The Resolution Of All The Images In A Pdf?

May 9, 2010

How to lower the resolution of all the images in a pdf? I searched around and couldn't find an answer to this. I have a pdf file of a textbook that I use in school but each page is an image of 2 pages of the textbook (left page, right page when the book is opened) and each image is of a very high resolution. I downloaded pdftk and pdfedit but for such a simple problem, I'm having trouble. Is there any way to do this?

I have tried converting the 380 MB PDF file to PostScript but after an hour of doing that, it stopped, and the PostScript only had about 17 pages instead of the 733. So converting it back to a PDF file to utilize pdftk's algorithms would have been worthless. I know I could split up the pdf file into sections but I'd rather just scale down all the images, or make them mid quality PNGs or high quality JPGs just so the filesize can be halved.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Has A Much Lower Signal Than Mac OSX?

Jan 9, 2011

I installed 10.04 1st by making a partition with bootcamp on MacOSX.Then I formatted the partition according to Ubuntu's instructions. I didn't install rEFIt, because I prefer to just hit the alt (option) key.I made the necessary adjustments according to URL...Community Ubuntu Documentation - and everything seemed to be working fine.I upgraded to Maverick and everything seemed to be working fine aswell. But then I noticed, that the wireless signal keeps failing and I'm asked to put the password again and again..

I don't think this is due to the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, but I just noticed it recently, maybe because of the air humidity, the signal was stronger a few days a go.. don't know!!Is there anything I can do?Perhaps install a new driver, or another wificlient, like Wifi-Radar??

Ubuntu :: How To Choose Upper-left Controls For Clearlooks

May 25, 2010

In Lucid Lynx, I've chosen the Clearlooks appearance, with customized colors, because of my liking of its overall looks. This choice of System > Preferences > Appearance comes with the "minimize, maximize, and close" controls in the upper right-corner.I'd like to get used to using these controls in the upper left-corner, because I gather that with Maverick Meerkat, this placement will be standard--and also because I think that this placement will actually prove more convenient for me, once I get used to it. How can I modify the Clearlooks appearance so as to put these controls in the upper left-corner?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Lower Shell Resolution

Feb 18, 2010

I needed Ubuntu server and recklessly picked Karmic. Hardware is some regular 775 mobo with integrated Intel graphics. Monitor is ASUS VH222D. Installation went smoothly but after that problems occurred. Shell is displayed in 1920x1080 resolution and fonts are so small almost unreadable. Grub2 looks OK, standard non-fb and so does few rows of text after loading grub but soon after that framebuffer becomes active.

dpkg-reconfigure console-setup doesn't mention resolution. Some articles are leading to grub2 gfxmode but none of manuals helped. I just cannot change grub2 menu resolution to anything else than standard console fonts (non-fb). Kernel option vga=XXX is no longer working. How to lower shell resolution? Why is this automatic???
