Jan 29, 2011When I load a fresh install of Fedora 14 on my system that the desktop doesn't load completely? It goes as far as giving me the desktop with a background, the icons and status bar do not appear. I am able to right click and open a konsle terminal but only when I am in KDE (failsafe)
What is weird is initially I had no problem. But when I switched to a different monitor the desktop would not load correctly. I have reinstalled the OS since then and still have the same issue.

Jun 1, 2011I need a screen recorder - but today I did. Being a quite recent Fodora convert I had a quick squint about the forums and found nothing but problems with the more well known desktop recorders or commandline ffmeg / mencoder solutions.A name that did crop up a few times is KAZAM - an Ubuntu Launchpad project... hmmm I thinks - shouldn't be too hard to get up on F15 being a python script... this Fedora solution is based on the Debian howto found here: [URL] And here it is:
1) You will need a few tools and dependencies 1st:

sudo yum install bzr intltool python-keybinder gnome-python-rsvg python-xlib python-distutils-extra python-pycurl x264-libs
2) Grab the code branch from launchpad by bzr:

3) change into Kazam folder and install:

sudo python setup.py install
4) Job done!
You'll now have an Applications -> Sound & Video -> Kazam Screencaster shortcut in your menu Once you have started a recording (with audio if you like and have pulse setup) you can pause / stop from the bottom panel applet and can then save the MKV to disk for or open further editing. The "Edit with" option does not seem to be working yet - at least not on my machine but that is no major hardship

Jan 7, 2010I've got a great little Thinkpad X22 laptop that I hate to put to rest. It isn't really any good for the latest and greatest Linux distro since it's something like 10 to 12 years old. What I've been wanting to do for quite a while, now, is build a text-base laptop that I can run VI, Emacs, Mutt, etc. I'm looking for some recommendations for distributions that will allow me to do an install without a GUI desktop. Also, a distro that, in this form, will still have good support for wireless. I figure that if I can get my wireless card(s) working, I can pretty much do anything with it. I've been running Slackware, Ubuntu, and Fedora 12 on my Thinkpad T41. Do either of those distributions allow an install without a GUI desktop?

The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

Jan 5, 2011I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

Apr 8, 2011I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu.How can I install this? I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...

Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.
