Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. View 3 Replies View Relatedhad a dual boot system with openSuse 11.1 and Windows XP working OK - Linux boot loader was where OS selection was made (openSuse was installed after Windows) Last week I had to reinstall Windows and this removed the Linux loader from MBR and Windows booted automatically. I wanted the Linux boot loader back,checked the threads about boot loader restoration and did the following:
- downloaded Knoppix 6.2.1 ISO and burned to CD
- booted with CD
- opened terminal with root privileges and typed:
grub (ENTER)
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 (ENTER)
> (hd0,2)
grub> root (hd0,2) (ENTER)
>Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0) (ENTER)
setup was successful (no error messages)
Now when booting, i have an error that root (0,3) can not be mounted and "Press any key to continue"??? When hitting any key I see that there is GRUB there with all entries as in original state (Suse 11.1 and Windows) but only Windows can be booted. Then I downloaded live eval of openSuse 11.1 and did the same (booted from CD and run same commands from terminal as root) - again no errors but still "root (0,3)" can not be mounted..
This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.
A few days ago my Laptop wouldn't hibernate in Windows 7, I managed to fix this problem by going into Windows' Disk Management tool and setting the C:/ Partition as the active partition, this fixed my hibernation issue, however I have just noticed that now when I boot my laptop my GRUB menu no longer appears, instead it just loads Windows straight away as if it was the only OS on my laptop.
I've confirmed it's something to do with my recent Disk Management change as I booted up GParted, removed the boot flag from Windows and when a rebooted my GRUB menu reappeared.
Not sure on how I can both have Windows as the active partition while being able to keep GRUB working also.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have two hard drives, one (hard drive C) is 250GB and is the first hard disk. The second (hard drive Z) is 1000 GB and is the second hard disk in order. There used to be windows XP on C and Windows 7 on Z.
Because I installed 7 to Z from XP which is on C, it put the Windows Boot Loader on hard disk C. I didn't know this until now.
When I installed Fedora, I gave it all of C to install on. That messed up something because the Windows Boot Loader was on that drive, so grub didn't list it in the OS's to load. I had to add it manually, and got it working correctly so it had an entry for the partition that Windows 7 was on. This didn't work however, because Windows 7 on drive Z didn't have it's NTLDR on that drive, so now I have a 7 installation without an NTLDR on Z and a Fedora install on C. I am sure grub is working properly because when I change the load order of the hard drives to load Z first, it gives the same error:
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart
or something along those lines.
Is there a way to get Z to have an NTLDR again and be able too boot Windows 7? I really hope I didn't mess up my entire 7 installation because of this.
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.

I installed Fedora 14 alongside windows, overwriting my old Ubuntu 10 partition. Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with 2 Hard drives one of which has Windows XP Pro installed. I installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on the other drive choosing LILO as the boot loader. When I reboot LILO only displays Red Hat 7.2 When I boot Red Hat and go into KDE boot settings I can see that hda has Windows NT. hdb has Red Hat 7.2. I then tried to make the Windows NT partition the default entry. When I try to confirm this an error displays warning me of danger if I proceed. Is there any way to make LILO recognize Windows (preferably without having to reinstall Red Hat), perhaps by installing another bootloader application!

I can tell you I went about fixing it all wrong because I wiped the FC11 partition (intending to install FC13) and now I can't boot anything up. My system consists of: sda1 vista, sdb1 XP, sdb5 extended, sdb6 Fedora. I thought grub was on the fedora partition, but reinstalling fedora with grub on that partition didn't fix the boot up problem. Do I need to replace the windows boot loader on sda1 with grub when installing fedora?

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on disk D, and was not using Windows 7 any more, although the "seventh" was present n main loading menu and in grub menu. 2 days ago I discovered, that in grub menu appeared "Windows Vista (Loader) - sda1" ! I didn't install it, and I'm sure that nobody else had access to my notebook. "Windows 7 (Loader)" now links to sda2.
When I try to run this strange "Windows Vista (Loader)", appears the Windows loading screen, than the empty Windows desktop background, and than the system reboots. How can Windows Vista (Loader) appear in grub, if nobody installed it? Can it be an imitation of Vista loader, made by some malware? How to remove this item from grub?

So I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and I burnt it to a DVD and chose "Install side-by-side" hoping that when I boot my computer something will pop up letting me choose between Ubuntu or Windows
Well, the problem is that it does NOT appear the windows 7 option in the loader. Only Ubuntu. The "File System" folder (it is like the C folder in windows, right?) has 260 free GB, 3 using Ubuntu and the other, I HOPE, Windows.
Also, I have REALLY IMPORTANT files in Windows. I was doing some excel sheets and if those are erased I will be in BIG trouble at work. I did a back up in a DVD with my important files, but the DVD is blank. I think I burned it bad or something
Or at least tell me how to get files from my windows folders
edit: I have looked in other posts and in Ubuntu help and I found nothing.
What is the Windows Vista (loader) when you start your computer and have to choose the ubuntu or the other operating system your running. There are some other chioces too like ubuntu safe mode. But whats the loader? Ive never tried to use it since i have no idea what it does.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi've a little problem with the grub loader. I've two OS in my laptot: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 64bit and Windows 7 64bit. But i can't boot Windows 7 from the grub loader. The grub still load the /dev/sda1 partition that is the recovery partition of the laptot, while windows 7 is in the partition /dev/sda6. I tried to modify the path in the grub.cfg, but still load the wrong partition, how i can do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's in the title - I just want to change from the GRUB loader back to the Windows MBR loader. It's probably something simple, I guess. It's just I don't want to see the GRUB loader (first) when I turn on my computer I want to see the normal Windows MBR.
If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.
Basically the issue is that after I installed ubuntu 10.04 (on the same drive as Windows 7) I can no longer boot windows 7 from grub. When I select windows 7 in the grub boot menu it returns me to the boot menu.I looked through other posts who had similar problems, however, I wanted to post my own thread as I was unsure how to fix the problem based on information from other threads.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on a Compaq CQ60 laptop on a 60 gig partition with a 3 gig swap partition. I'm running windows 7 64bit ultimate on the main partition. I installed off a live disc and Ubuntu works and runs great(except for wifi >.<).
My problem is ever since I installed Ubuntu Windows wont load every time. About half the time I select Windows 7 in the boot loader and it pulls up the windows screen with the stupid little flag, and then resets itself.
There where no problems with Windows 7 prior to the install. I've read that if you didn't reset your computer after shrinking your drive in windows it will cause problems later. But I did that so I cant think of any other explanation for why it would continually crash. Has anybody else had this issue, is this something that might be repaired by removing Ubuntu and the partition and reinstalling it?
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 64-Bit via Wubi but it seems that when I turn on my machine I first get the Windows Boot Loader, when I select Ubuntu from the list it then goes into GRUB with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. Is there any way to change this so only GRUB is used?

I reinstalled SuSE and went into the boot settings in Yast. When I rebooted, neither Windows nor SuSe would boot. I ran a system repair from the SuSE disk, at the boot loader settings, it displays the SuSE Linux partition and the Failsafe Linux recovery partition. I did not format any drives in the system repair. How do I add the Windows partition to the boot loader settings?

which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.
