View 3 RepliesI am going to allow myself a few cheeky ones next weekend. So I though it would be nice to have a clock on my desktop reminding me of how long to go. Is there a countdown clock I can add to my Gnome desktop? I am using Centos5 & F14.

My computer will have no OS installed. Which is the easiest way to install, using CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso or CentOS-5.5-i386-bin-DVD.iso? What are the basic procedures?
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
View 4 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn KDE's Konsole, I can do the following from the terminal:

How can I determine what desktop number the current gnome terminal in a gnome session is connected to?
I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed KDE from a CD. Then decided I wanted to have Gnome has an option. I installed "gnome-desktop" via software manager (as per some other instructions on the forum) but I still have no option to choose Gnome when logging in.
What all do I choose to get the complete Gnome environment? Or is it better (& easier?) to reinstall with a DVD?
I am trying to install openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop from the DVD in February's Linux Magazine which I hope guarantees a good disk. However both the live DVD and a trial full installation load to a green screen without taskbar or icons meaning I cannot run any applications or even close down. The live KDE version runs OK but I wanted Gnome because I have had problems backing up Kmail in the past. I have run version 10.3 with Gnome successfully on this computer previously.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 working. Everytime I install it, it installs with errors but when the user I setup auto logs in to the GNOME desktop, the desktop never loads. I can get into failsafe mode sometimes. I've replaced the harddrive and installed it again = same issue. I've redownloaded and burned a different DVD, verifying the checksum, and running the "check media" option = same issue. I've done a repair install = same issue. I've removed the added Ethernet and modem cards and reinstalled = same issue. I've deleted all partitions from previous install and reinstalled = same issue. Currently, I just defraged the HDD on a windows machine and am running the install once more (one a completely different machine) but what's going on here? I need 11.2 for Clonezilla SE (not 11.3)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI`m running openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE 4.7.0 and i want to install Gnome3 as a second desktop option at login menu, for me to explore and learn. I know the Gnome 3 repo is this Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE: 3.0/openSUSE_11.4 and the app`s repo exists as well Index of /repositories/GNOME: Apps/openSUSE_11.4+GNOME_STABLE_3.0 I don`t use network manager for my internet connection because i own a router and i use ifup with dhcp4. To install it i just add the repo`s and run zypper dup ? or are there any other settings to adjust so i don`t end up with a broken system(regarding to the kdm service that starts KDE, i suspect that a gdm daemon will be created as well...) ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I installed Debian Squeeze with Gnome off the 64-bit CD 1. I didn't have my ethernet connected and ended up only getting a pretty minimal desktop with not much installed besides Gnome. This bothered me, as I thought I could install the whole desktop off the CD. I reinstalled, this time with my Ethernet connected. This time it took much more time and gave me what I wanted, a complete desktop. Simply put, what do I need to install everything that I currently have without having my Ethernet plugged in?

Is it still possible to install other desktop environments despite already having installed KDE and GNOME? If I happen to install other desktop environments such as XFCE, LXDE, CDE, EDE, UDE, will I be able to use one particular environment by disabling the rest whenever needed
I installed Opensuse 11.2 DVD on a machine with Windows XP. During the installation I installed the KDE desktop. I had not tried out the KDE desktop. I had a Live CD with the Gnome desktop that i had tried out and liked. I think I like the Gnome desktop better. Now I would like to run both desktops. After going to the install new software and changing the view to patterns and select the "Gnome Desktop Environment" I get this error.
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2010-03-18 09:47:52 ####

I checked the soundlevels in "sound" no problems what i could see
the "sound" in yast trying to play test sound and that works.
..... etc works.
"notification sound" works when updating system and when attaching battery-charger to laptop works
and on "startup application" is still set to play sounds on login What should be the next step to solve problem ?
first time using this os and i tried to solve and read on the forum but i still dont find whats wrong
I have an openSUSE 11.3 system happily running KDE 4.4.4, and want to add Gnome desktop as an option. I go into YAST->S/W Mgmt->Patterns and click on 'Gnome Desktop Environment' and get this warning - "pattern:gnome-11.3-22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided" (screenshot here). It looks like the conflict is with patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure, which lists the Gnome RPM and pulseaudio as conflicts.
Questions: Is this only for bookkeeping purposes, or is there really a conflict having both desktops on one system? Will I have conflicts with pulseaudio? (I know I can disable it) If I want to go ahead, should I just select deinstallation of the ..._pure RPM?
Im trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects. Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...

View 10 Replies View RelatedMorning All, I have a RHEL 4 box with a broken GNOME package. It boots to TWM. I have looked at some of the posts that recommend looking at config files etc. No .xinitrc file found. Cannot "exec gnome-session" , cannot find file. No choice at login screen. Some Gnome files are on the machine. How do download and re-install the entire Gnome-Desktop package?
View 5 Replies View RelatedInstalled Suse 11.2 from download CD. During the "answering questions" at the beginning of the process, selected Gnome as the desktop enviornment instead of the default KDE. The install process ended with no reported errors. After the final reboot at the process's end, the Gnome logon screen was displayed. After the user name/password were entered, a medium green screen was displayed, but the Gnome desktop was never displayed. The "animal" logo was not on the screen just the green screen and some "filagree" lines, probably part of the logo.
Waited a few minutes, mouse-clocked, pressed various keys and then tried ctrl-alt-del, but no response. Did a power off/on reboot, but the results were the same.
I then did a re-install. Took the KDE default for desktop. At install's end, the KDE desktop appeared and everything works just fine. During this second install, all choices were the same as for the first/Gnome install. Worked from written notes, and not from memory, so am sure that the change to KDE was the only difference.
Couldn't find any information on this anomally via forum and Google searches, hence this post.
This is my first time to use Suse, so could well have "missed something".
