Jan 29, 2011When I load a fresh install of Fedora 14 on my system that the desktop doesn't load completely? It goes as far as giving me the desktop with a background, the icons and status bar do not appear. I am able to right click and open a konsle terminal but only when I am in KDE (failsafe)
What is weird is initially I had no problem. But when I switched to a different monitor the desktop would not load correctly. I have reinstalled the OS since then and still have the same issue.

Jun 1, 2011I need a screen recorder - but today I did. Being a quite recent Fodora convert I had a quick squint about the forums and found nothing but problems with the more well known desktop recorders or commandline ffmeg / mencoder solutions.A name that did crop up a few times is KAZAM - an Ubuntu Launchpad project... hmmm I thinks - shouldn't be too hard to get up on F15 being a python script... this Fedora solution is based on the Debian howto found here: [URL] And here it is:
1) You will need a few tools and dependencies 1st:

sudo yum install bzr intltool python-keybinder gnome-python-rsvg python-xlib python-distutils-extra python-pycurl x264-libs
2) Grab the code branch from launchpad by bzr:

sudo bzr branch lp:kazam
3) change into Kazam folder and install:

sudo python setup.py install
4) Job done!
You'll now have an Applications -> Sound & Video -> Kazam Screencaster shortcut in your menu Once you have started a recording (with audio if you like and have pulse setup) you can pause / stop from the bottom panel applet and can then save the MKV to disk for or open further editing. The "Edit with" option does not seem to be working yet - at least not on my machine but that is no major hardship

Jun 11, 2009I successfully installed fedora live CD KDE version on virtual PC. but I can't install the live CD Gnome desktop version. details: I just add vga=0x32D on boot, no problem booting after that. I am now log-in as live user, but I can't find the shotcut for installation on desktop "install to hard drive" but using the terminal, there's a file under Desktop, 'liveinst.desktop" I tried running it, graphical installation will appear, but during copying to hard disk, it says bad media.

I have a fully licensed version of XP that I want to install on the computer and wondering if it is possible to do the following: Partition a portion of the drive for XP. Jul 19, 2010Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

Jan 5, 2011I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

Apr 8, 2011I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu.How can I install this? Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.

I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

Apr 6, 2011I've successfully downloaded openSUSE-11.4(64-bit) ISO image from the openSUSE site,and burned the ISO image successfully into 2 DVD's separately using Nero(ver.7) But I am unable to boot up from the DVD. When I pop in the DVD into my DVD-writer,a few seconds go by with the blinking cursor,and eventually boots off to Windows.The BIOS setting of my machine has been enabled to boot from CD/DVD first before HDD. No error messages are shown while I try to boot. The burned ISO image file is O.K. as it gets successfully verified after writing on the DVD. The image file {openSUSE-11.4 (64-bit)}being 4.29GB in size
