I am an entrepreneur/design engineer so I do a lot modeling, rendering, etc and lot of my programs can only run in Windows. I have a fully licensed version of XP that I want to install on the computer and wondering if it is possible to do the following: Partition a portion of the drive for XP. (VMware isn't the greatest as you lose your 3D acceleration, so I definitely want to do the partition) Install my programs and ensure they run. Use the machine as a virtual desktop remotely?

When you have a computer whose hard drive is partitioned with one part Windows and the other Linux, what are the concerns with viruses and transference across the two systems? Can viruses infect the windows side brought over through the Linux side (Firefox) or are the partitions completely separated? In other words, if all of your Internet voyages are through Firefox under Linux, is there any danger of infecting the Windows side of the computer? What about when having Linux installed within the Windows portion as a virtual system?

I have a Visio TV that I dropped and cracked the LCD display in one corner, for watching TV it's basically useless now. On a whim I plugged it into one of my computers and about 75% of the screen is still usable. Only the bottom right hand corner of the screen is messed up. What I'd like to do if possible is to define an area of the screen. Say for instance the top left hand corner across and down to where the screen starts getting bad.
Like a left click and drag out the good area and then make only that area "the monitor" for the OS to use. I'd then probably build a case or something to house it in and only show the "live" area to clean things up. I'd like to use Ubuntu. But if you know I can't do it in Linux but can in Windows I'd consider that option as well. I just hate to junk the TV if I can use it some how as a monitor.

I was browsing and then a pop up window came up and all my display got resized randomly for a few seconds. Finally,the lower third of my monitor is total black and useless.The taskbar and dock is still visible at the bottom though but above it is total black.All my compiz settings are gone too!I have tried win7 and everything is fine there.I have tried to adjust monitor settings but nothing changes.

I have an acer laptop (TravelMate 7320) which came with Windows Vista. I have made copies of the recovery disk for vista and installed Ubuntu 10.04 and would like to run Vista from a virtual machine in Ubuntu and for this purpose I installed Virtualbox. The problem is that the recover disk that acer provide require the hard drive to partitioned in a certain way otherwise the installation process error outputting "No partition available".
Acer do provide a bootable CD for download from there website to partition the drive before installing from their recovery disk but I have tried this with virtual box and the process doesn't detect the virtual drive. So my question is does anyone know of a virtualisation software for Ubuntu that they could recommend that allow for the partitioning of virtual disk before the installation of an OS? Or even better does anyone know how to do this with Virtualbox?

Is there any way to install a Ubuntu server and access the server remotely via a Ubuntu desktop environment instead of a SSH command line?
I will be installing a Ubuntu server in an office where the office manager will need to be able to do simple things like add/remove users, access filesystems, etc. She can handle these tasks in Ubuntu desktop/GUI, but it is impractical for her to have to learn how to use the CLI terminal to do this stuff.
Will I have to install desktop Ubuntu on the server to do this, or can I install Ubuntu server version and setup another computer Ubuntu desktop to remotely login graphically?

I can't remotely access my desktop when the desktop is asking for a keyring password. Why does this happen? it means that remote access is useless because you would need to enter the password locally before you can vnc to it. I do not wish to disable the default keyring but is there a way of making vnc work so I can enter the password.

install fedora 11 on Vista I want to keep the windows boot loader and also install on a usb drive or a seperate partition that has 10GB free "install doesn't see partition's". Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. I'm trying to install now but install does'nt give me any option to select partitions from my drives one 320GB "portable, 3 partitions" and 80GB "main os 2 partitions one partition has 10GB free"

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

I'm using F14 on a netbook with a pathetically small screen, 1024x600. The resolution is so low that important dialogs, the print dialog for example, can't be displayed in their entirety. It's also not possible to drag a dialog up so that you see the bottom of the dialog.
Using a virtual desktop that's larger than the physical desktop would provide a workaround. ais there a way to set desktop size to be larger than the screen size?

I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have
/dev/sdb1 478711768 137858256 316536328 31% /
/dev/sda1 101089 15346 80524 17% /boot
Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?

How to make my GNOME desktop auto recognize the NTFS partition of the USB drive.

All files permission on the drive is 777. I can read, I can write, do whatever I want.
But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:

All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.
So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?

Right after selecting [Install Ububtu] / [Try live CD], I get this message and the system freezes. The same message appears when trying to install Ubuntu from VMWare Player or booting from a CD instead of a USB stick. admit I don't know everything and right now I am at my wit's end trying to figure out this one.The system is: F13 x86_64; GNOME (compiz turned off); wine-1.1.38-1.fc13.i686 and nvidia er from RPM Fusion xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-195.36.24-1.fc13.x86_64The problem is: When I run a fullscreen app in Wine, switch virtual desktops and switch back, the fullscreen app has shrunk. This did not occur on F12 prior to upgrading to F13.The app itself seems to have not noticed it was resized; on checking its configuration panel it seems to still think it's running full screen.What I want to know is whether the problem is in Wine, the video driver, or the window manager, or somewhere else, so that I can report it to the right people (or just fix it).

i am trying to access a drive - M which is a logical one.i have formatted it with ext3 file system and i would like to access the drive all of 30gb from Virtual-Box's Linux os.i am using RHEL 5.5 server in Virtual bOx on a Win XP Os.i have also tried various mount command but at times i get this protocol failed error,Also tried changing the default name given by the Vbox for the drive and tried mounting the same but no success.
i am able to mount the other drives-NTFS partition even automatically since i have edited my /etc/fstab for this.that works but this partition which i created using the paragon partition software is of type ext3 which I am not able to mount

I posted about viewing desktops remotely (received no reply), as I have an "off task web-drifting" problem with some students in my classroom, due to the fact that I no longer have my old SynchronEyes program. I have Windows Vista Business/XP Pro machines (32 of them in all) and I cannot view desktops remotely, regardless of the fact that 1) the Remote Desktop Service is enabled, and 2) I know the IP numbers and the domain names. How can I view desktops remotely with the Remote Desktop Viewer tool in Ubuntu, with the fact that the IP addresses are correct and the Remote Desktop Service is enabled on all 32 machines?

UPDATE: I'm looking to visually, securely and with as small a footprint as possible manage a remote Linux system via an GUI. It's not clear to me if Linux has a default method for streaming the desktop. Before installing something on the remote Linux system, is there a grep or find I should run to see if there's existing support on the computer? looked at Xming, but couldn't tell what it's doing; meaning if like WinSCP it's just creating an interface on my end and running CMDs remotely, or if it's streaming the desktop.

I have done a standard install of Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop. All I have changed is to edit the smb.conf to set the correct workgroup. Everything is working fine, except that I am not able to connect to Ubuntu from my Windows 7 pc using Windows' built-in tool. That should work, shouldn't it? Do I need to edit more settings?

In this particular example I am using NoMachine's NX, although the behaviour also occurs when running VNC for instance. I'd like to connect from my laptop (1 physical screen), to my desktop at work (2 physical screen) via NX. It all works but the following problem occurs: When I connect with my laptop to my desktop I (almost) always am connected to the 2nd physical screen, whereas all windows appear on this first screen. I can interact with my desktop, use the task manager etc, see which windows are running, but any application I start, starts on the first screen (which I cannot see) and for the life of me I cannot move them from screen1 to screen2 without dragging them (which obviously is impossible since I only see screen2).The obvious workaround is: *before* you connect disable the second screen via the display manager but for me this is a non-pratical work around because it requires a lot of actions before heading home. how I can connect from a single-head desktop to a dual-head desktop without crippeling my desktop experience?

I've been spending sometime trying to setup anclient on windowso access my fedora serverI'm currently using xming but there's no way whatsoeverme to make gnome available remotely. I have two machines. Desktop and X61s. I have a drive on Desktop called Ianthe. This is in /media. This is remotely mounted on my X61s machine (a laptop), as /media/Ianthe. It automounts when I boot it up. BUT, the same drive looks different when viewed on the remote machine. An example is a certain directory, which when viewed on Desktop has 21 files in it, but when viewed on X61s has on 7 files in it.
If, on the X61s machine, I go to Network > Windows Network > LBBARNET > DESKTOP > Ianthe and navigate to the relevant folder, I can see all 21 items. But if I mount it, I can only see the 7. I have tried rebooting X61s, but it remains the same. The permissions on all the files in the folder on Desktop are identical, so I can't see any permission reason why this should happen. And, if I copy one of the files on the Desktop which doesn't appear on mounted view on X61s then the copied version appears immediately on both views.

i have an archos av500 dvr which would look like a usb harddrive when plugged in. thats good for me since i can modify dvr-timer.txt when i am not home. the problem is when it is plugged into my pc the dvr functionality doesnt work (it still acts like a harddrive). is there something i can do that will disable power to the usb port? umount wont do what i need. i dont know how to disable libusb? the only thing that would work is sudo shutdown -h now but i wouldnt be able to access my server.

I'm still pretty new to servers and ubuntu and have ran into something I could see being a problem in the future. On a dedicated remote server I have installed a web server using the "How To Forge - Perfect server set up for ubuntu 10.04 and ispconfig". I have a forum and email up and running and shoutcast radio and teamspeak3 servers also. We can also nx into it if need be. I can reformat the 1T hdd remotely from my provider control panel and ssh is installed at the same time and a new root password is sent via email. The thing is I now realise that by default the file system is written to a 10gig partition.
This might usually be ok but ispconfig uses the /var/www folder on the file system to house the forum I host and the partition is filling up. My mate I co rent with is talking about starting a parrot/bird owners forum and i might eventually like to have a gaming forum as well. I realise I should probably have set things up differently but like I said I am new at all this and tbh the home directories never going to have much in it so theres 900 gig doing nothing. So my question is can I use anything to enlarge that partition remotely? I know theres gparted on disc and all the articles I found say I need to use a disc which obviously is out of the question.
So what I think I need is some sort of partition magic for ubuntu. I would really like to expand it so all my current files etc on it would stay as is. I'm also currently looking into back up methods and wondered if that would be the way to go? Back up my file system and home directories and then reformat and make the partition larger? Or could I copy the entire www folder to a newly created folder in /home and re write the site enabled files to point to it? Would this work and if so what else would I need to edit?

I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

I am at my own desktop and I have root access on my own desktop.
I also have root access on a Desktop Ubuntu system (192.168.5.10) on the LAN. I need to create another desktop user account on that 192.168.5.10 system.
So I logged into that system with: ssh -Y myself@192.168.5.10
Then I did: sudo users-admin
This brings up the Users Settings but the Add User and Unlock buttons are disabled. How do I enable these buttons?
