General :: Create A RAID Set Up And Merge Partitions?

I have three hard drives in my computer That I want to make RAID 0. All of them already have partitions and data on them. What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. Or would it easier/better/possible to do this with LVM? Even if I'd have to shrink partitions and copy data to a new LVM one to get it set up properly, would it be better than RAID 0?
Is that possible to merge the 2 ext3 partitions without moving data in the old partitions? What i did was, i created new partition say /dev/hda8, which is to be merged to some old partition say /dev/hda3.
i used to have 2 partitions: ubuntu and windows. i removed windows and currently am trying to merge it into ubuntu using GParted. however for some reason Gparted won't allow me to increase the size of my ubuntu partition. if you look at the picture that is attached, i need to merge /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 . does anybody know why i can't merge them or if there is other software i can you for it?
I've got a 500gb hard drive. -sda1 is 400gb (ubuntu 9.10/32bit/ext3) -sda2 is 50gb (ubuntu 10.04/64bit/ext4)
I would like to expand my lucid partition now and eventually get rid of my 9.10 partition. I've got an 80GB virtualbox file sitting on sda1 that I need and want to expand sda2 now so I can first copy the VB file over, then expand sda2 completely. I just finished creating sda3 ext4, but cant figure out how to merge it with sda2 (well really sda6). Please see image. [URL]
Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
Code: mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2 As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.
Is there any way to Merge hard drive partitions? I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? I am using 10.10, by the way.
My laptop has 80GB HDD Space, and sometime ago I installed fedora 13 inside windows with 15 gb space for it. Now, I have removed windows and the disk space is recovered. So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.
I wanted to merge my 1TB disks into and RAID 5 array, 4 of them in RAID 5 is above 2Terabytes limit of msdos partition tables which grub2 can boot from, so I decided to start up the system from scratch, by building it on GPT partitions, but seems grub2 won't boot from GPT partition because it drops to grub rescue and I can't really do anything from there.
I use slackware 13.1 and I want to create a RAID level 5 with 3 disks. Should I use entire device or a partition? What the advantages and disadvantages of each case? If a use the entire device, should I create any partition on it or leave all space as free?
have 6680 wav files with about 500kb size in a folder and i want to merge all of them.the size of the files altogether is 1.5GB. how i can merge them and compress them to create a mp3 or ogg file?
OK, trying to install Slackware version 10 on the Athlon XP Shuttle PC and been hit back hard at the very first hurdle.In short I can't create a partition in Linux.At all!CD boots up OK. Loading in basic kernal.I try and create a partition using either fdisk or cfdisk.BOTH apps reports that the partition table cannot be written to! Both apps run read only mode.So I am unable to create any partitions in Linux.
I booted up a Windows 98 floppy and checked the partition table.Two x30GB partitions.I deleted both of them in case Linux did not like a Fat32 DOS/XP partition table.Tried again. Same read only messages.Attempt to use 'w' in fdisk reports the partition table cannot be written to.Viewing the partion table returns nothing, no matter how I set it up in DOS/Windows.
Only clue is that to my surprise, the DVD RW drive is the Primary master and the 60GB HD is the secondary master. I must have slipped up installing the drives years ago and Windows didn't care. Would Linux? Other than that, nothing in the BIOS that gives a clue. I turned off ACPI support in case. I also tried the ACPI kernal. No joy there either. But DOS/Windows quite happy to build partitions.Cfdisk states that no partition tables exist even after Windows has just created one.So I am at a loss.Any clues? This is a Shuttle PC so the tech is a bit propritory but nothing that various renderings of Windows have not handled.
i have server and there is no option from my control panel on data center to make os reload with partitions i need for Openvz , so how can create partitions ? the server have 2 hard.

I have a dual boot on my laptop between XP and Ubuntu with a storage partition.that gives me total of 4 primary partition

I now want to add a OSX to my laptop in tripple booth. I did shrink the windows partition and now I realized that all my partitions are primary and cannot create a new one with the space I shrink from windows.Is it possible to merge ubuntu and its swap into extended/logical partitions so I can create a new primary for Mac OS X?
I am using ffmpeg for merge wav files to a mov video. My doing is below
1. First extract audio (wav file) from video 2. Create wav file from mp3 track 1 3. Create wav file from mp3 track 2 4 Merge extract audio from video with track 1 and track2. Now finally create a new video with original video's video stream and merged audio stream.
Process is working. However final video is 3-4 times greater than original one. I want that final video should be near about size of original video. As I understand, all three wav files (created from ) make video larger.

I have 2x 1.5TB hard disks and I'm going to buy a new 2TB drive soon. First though I just wanted to check that I could partition off the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the 2TB drive (leaving 1.5TB or more free) and install Debian to that part, then use the remainder of the disk in combination with the 2x 1.5 TB drives in RAID 5? i.e. can you mix whole drives and with partitions from other drives in RAID 5 and/or is it best to just stick with complete drives for the RAID array?I only have room for 3 drives in the small mATX case that houses my NAS device and I want to maximise storage capacity and minimise expense.
So, over the next couple of days I'm going to be building a new file server based on Ubuntu with three 2TB drives (and possibly a pair of 500GB drives I already own) in RAID 5 using mdadm. I'm under the impression that I would be able to add the 500GB drives using mdadm; while all drives need to be of the same capacity for hardware RAIDs, software RAIDs are able to work with different-sized volumes. Is this correct?
i right in thinking that mdadm presents the RAID as a drive which can then be used like a single drive would be? create a logical partition within the RAID formatted with HFS+ which can be used for network-based Time Machine backups for a few Macs in my house.Now, this is where I particularly show my ignorant side: is it possible to create a logical partition with a variable size? Similar to how a virtual hard drive works with some virtual machines; a "drive" may take up to 200GB, for example, but is only as large as the amount of data it stores. If it is possible, is this only for certain partition formats?
Googling tells you how to resize RAID partitions but not how to resize the underlying disk partitions. In my particular case, I initially sized a RAID array way too large - and when I added another disk to the array, I decided I was wasting too much space.I shrunk the file system, then "grew" the array (/dev/md2) to the smaller size, and resized the file system again to fit. However the actual disk partitions (/dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, etc.) are still the original size - they are just mostly unused space.As I understand it, the superblocks are at the end of the partition. I believe this means the end of space used by the array on each device, so that the superblock moved to a lower block number when I shrunk the array. However it also means that I need to get the new physical partition size correct to avoid clobbering the superblock.
Is there an easy way to get any partition editor to shrink the physical partitions to the new array size?If not, is the superblock included in the space allocated to the array so that the next partition can start in the very next block, or is it added after the array so I'd need to allow some space for it?
I am trying to setup a H/W RAID-1 matrix but I am unsuccessful. I am trying to get partitions installed as /dev/md0, /dev/md1 but it keeps going for /dev/mapper/isw...The reason is that I have R1Soft backup and it needs to hook the partitions as seen in /proc/partitions from /dev not /dev/mapper/isw. I have tried to boot the installation with various options but nothing!
