Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?
Feb 1, 2011Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Dec 14, 2010I wanna configure RAID 1 within TWO HDD in RHEL-5 during installation moment .I have the following questions regarding software raid vs hardware raid :
1) What is the basic difference between hardware and software raid
2) In software raid , If I use two HDD as RAID1 , then if one HDD is failed , can I boot it from another HDD ?
3)In software RAID , Between two HDD , If One HDD is failed then if I remove bad HDD and add a spare HDD then is it automatically synchronized with FIRST HDD ?
4) In software raid is it possible to keep '/boot' partition in two HDD (I use 2 HDD as RAID1) as separate partition ?
5) Finally is there any documnets or sites where I get software raid configuration during INSTALLATION moment in using GRAPHICAL mode , plz give me the address.

May 18, 2011I use putty to get to my RHEL 5.3 workstation from my Windows laptop.
Typically, if I want a new terminal on my windows 7 workstation from another terminal or mc, I have to type start and I will see a new terminal window running the default shell.
QUESTION : What is the equivalent command in RHEL 5.3 (and or solaris) to create a new terminal window from the command line ? I will be entering this command from the shell prompt or mc's command line.
In Windows, if I want to start another terminal and in that terminal, I want to run a program, I can do "start program.exe arg1 arg2". this will create a new terminal window and runs program.exe in that terminal window. I don't have to create a terminal and then in a separate step run the program. How can I do this in Linux ?
General :: Create A RAID Set Up And Merge Partitions?
Aug 7, 2009I have three hard drives in my computer That I want to make RAID 0. All of them already have partitions and data on them. What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. Or would it easier/better/possible to do this with LVM? Even if I'd have to shrink partitions and copy data to a new LVM one to get it set up properly, would it be better than RAID 0?

the message reads:
"Device /dev/md0 not found (or ignored by filtering)."
The /dev/md0 has a partition type 8e for linux LVM
Can anyone enlighten me?

Feb 25, 2010I'm having a problem installing RHEL-5 on my system. I have Windows 7 installed so far on a Dell XPS workstation that came with hardware RAID 0. I have 2 x 500 gb hard drives. So I went in Win 7 and partitioned my disk to leave about 75 gb of unallocated space to install RHEL-5 on. I load the RHEL-5 DVD into my disk, restart my comp, and just follow installation steps. Use about 73 GB as an ext3 partition for the RHEL-5 and have about 2 GB reserved for swap space. RHEL-5 installs, and I'm all done. However, when I reboot the computer, the GRUB boot loader fails to load. I'm directly taken into Windows. How do I recover GRUB so I have the option of loading into RHEL-5?

I am using Electric Cloud applications. Sometimes it creates some kernel panic and immediately got rebooted. Kernel-debuginfo rpm is not installed. In some thread, I read the kernel-debuginfo rpm's version should match with the kernel version. In my case I couldn't even find the exact version of kernel-debuginfo version.

Apr 18, 2011I am trying to build an tk.8.4.19 with the rpmbuild command. In the spec file there is a make command that uses the supplied Makefile that builds tk and untars it to the build directory /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/tk_8.4.19/unix .
The issue is that /usr/bin/wish is compiled with the make command and renamed to wish8.4, , and when the rpm does build it does not contain the link /usr/bin/wish -> /usr/bin/wish8.4 and there are other custom rpms on our systems (built by other people) that call /usr/bin/wish.
I have tried adding the ldconfig ln -sf /usr/bin/wish8.4 /usr/bin/wish in the %install and %build directives, it is in the tar file. I have tested it by creating the tar with the link and creating a null file call wish but it never gets built into the rpm. Whenever I call out /usr/bin/wish in the %file directive the rpm wont build.
I believe it will install and create the link if I tell it to ignore or skip the prereq check. That requires options to the yum command but it creates a problem because I need to to work with yum -y install <tk> or yum -y upgrade <tk> through a unattended script.
Bottom line is that I need the file to exist in the rpm or after the install and yum needs to be aware that /usr/bin/wish link is there so it doesn't require an override option during install.

Oct 31, 2010I've never worked with a software raid before, and I was a little worried about getting the hand of it before actually relying on it. So what I decided to do is to create a raid 5 on my Fedora 12 installation, and then install fedora 14 and see if the raid 5 was still in tact on the OTHER 4 disks that were NOT a part of the OS drive. After installing Fedora 14 I noticed that the raid5 was broken, and I googled for hours and even started a thread here, but could not get it working again.
I decided to start from scratch, and just delete all of the partitions and the raid, and do a new raid5 using 4 disks that are 2tb each. I googled for a long time, and tried using both the cli (mdadm) and the gui (disk utility), but I was not able to successfully get a new raid5 working? I've tried various examples, to no avail. Any link to a difinitive resource on how to setup a raid5? I don't just mean the commands for mdadm, but also the actual disk formatting that's required before setting up a raid, if it's even required. I say thing for 2 reasons:
1) In fedora 12, using disk-utility, I didn't have to format the drives first, or anything else. I just selected 4 drives, said to make them a raid 5, and then formatted them as ext4. But many examples I've seen says that the drives must already be formatted, and you use partition #1 of each drive to setup the raid, whereas when I did it, I didn't have any partitions (they were new drives), and I could format after.
2) One example I've found says to use ext*, whereas another example says to use xfs. I don't feel this matters, and is only a matter of choice/taste, right?

Jan 11, 2011I'm using a Intel mac pro running Ubuntu Server 10.4 64bit, and I have it working. Currently, I'm just using Ubuntu using bootcamp, and not using EFI. The OS drive is 250gb which I know is more than enough, but it was what I had free at the time. I added 3 1tb drives to the computer, but not sure how to create a raid with them. Jan 1, 2010I have a software RAID array using mdraid that consists of two 1.5TB drives that I use for storage, the array is mounted at /Storage. I am running out of space in the array so I ordered two more 1.5TB drives to create a 4 drive RAID 1+0 array which will be 3TB big. My question is how do I create the new array and not lose any data?
The drives and partitions are sdc1, sdd1, and soon to be sde1, sdf1. I currently have 4 RAID arrays (md0,md1,md2,md3). I think I can create the RAID 1+0 array with the two new drives, copy the data from my current array to the new one, remove the old array, then add the two original drives to the new array. But I wanted to ask on here first to make sure my data doesn't go poof.

CentOS 5 Server :: Possible To Create RAID SW On Working System
Oct 5, 2009I'm working in a little company and 2 weeks ago one of our server had a hard disk failure (yes it was a seagate 11) and after passed two days without sleep trying to recover everything (and we did it!!) we took the decision now to use in some of our server a raid sw, so if one HD fail we can continue with our system without losing nothing. Yes I know normally you have to take all the precautions before so this things never happen, but you know I thing if it never arrives you, you always think than you're lucky and it's never going to happen to you but one day you discover reality.
So now this server is working with a Centos and the default HD partitions one boot partition and the LVM. I'm reading everything I'm finding about raid sw and lvm but I don't find if it's possible to create now with the system working a raid sw without having to reinstall all the system. Is it possible to do it ? If not what are my options to make a system backup before reinstalling everything?
