Ubuntu :: How To Expand And Merge Partitions

Apr 14, 2010

I've got a 500gb hard drive.
-sda1 is 400gb (ubuntu 9.10/32bit/ext3)
-sda2 is 50gb (ubuntu 10.04/64bit/ext4)

I would like to expand my lucid partition now and eventually get rid of my 9.10 partition. I've got an 80GB virtualbox file sitting on sda1 that I need and want to expand sda2 now so I can first copy the VB file over, then expand sda2 completely. I just finished creating sda3 ext4, but cant figure out how to merge it with sda2 (well really sda6). Please see image. [URL]

I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? I am using 10.10, by the way.

I have three hard drives in my computer That I want to make RAID 0. All of them already have partitions and data on them. What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. Or would it easier/better/possible to do this with LVM? Even if I'd have to shrink partitions and copy data to a new LVM one to get it set up properly, would it be better than RAID 0?

So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.

General :: Windows - Formatting A Memory Stick With Two Partitions?

Apr 18, 2010

I have a 16GB memorystick which used to have a Linux partition. It therefore has two partitions; 2GB FAT32 and 14GB linux boot drive. The linux part stopped working, so I decided to reinstall it. But windows can't see that partition. I tried formatting the whole disk, but I can only format one partition (the FAT32). There seems to be no way to combine the two partitions into one big one, and there seems to be no way for windows to partition the large part of the memorystick to but Linux on it. In the windows partition manager, windows sees the large unused partition, and it let me delete it. But once I have deleted it, I'm not allowed to format it. Also I cannot delete or resize the small partition. I have a memorystick with two partitons. Windows only sees one of them, and won't let me use the other one. I would like to combine the two partitions so I can install Linux on the memory stick again.

OpenSUSE Install :: Lenovo W520 - Installation Fails When Formatting Partitions

May 6, 2011

I'm trying to install openSuSE 11.4 onto my brand-new Lenovo W520 laptop, using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (FakeRAID?) controller, ROM version 10.1.0.1008. I have 2 physical 500GB disks configured in a mirror (RAID-1). Everything looks fine, the installation program comes up and asks if I want to use mdadm to manage the RAID, to which I answer yes. I go through the normal setup screens, and select the partition layout that I want (for sake of this post, I'll limit myself to the layout that the system itself recommends).

The problem comes when it becomes time to format the partitions. Somehow the partitioning program gets it into it's head that the root partition is 10TB, not 20GB, and the ext4 partitioning fails in various ways (short reads to sector zero, unable to map using 4096 byte sectors, etc, etc) depending on exactly which partitioning scheme I'm attempting. I pretty much get the same result no matter how I play the partitions, which file systems I use (XFS, ext4, etc [of course, I can't use XFS for /boot...]).

For now I've gone ahead and set myself up using software RAID, since this system is unlikely to become dual-boot with Windows for a few years at least. (As an aside, but as a hint to others, when the installation fails, I end up having to go back into the Intel RAID controller BIOS boot to clear out the entire RAID setup each time it fails - the disks are left in a completely useless state).

Ubuntu :: Unable To See NTFS Partitions Even Using Testdisk

Nov 1, 2010

I was running Windows XP SP3 when one of my drives (or partitions) suddenly wasn't accessible. I booted into an old ubuntu Live CD I had (version 8.X) and tried mounting it. I could see the other partitions at this time. I rebooted the machine a couple of times (for normal reasons) and after a particular reboot none of my partitions were present! All seemed to have gone! I didn't do anything except mount the partition from Ubuntu Live CD. Made no write operations .

fdisk -l gives me this:

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

to list the files and I get:

Code:

Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged.

I originally had 6 partitions (including my primary). What do I make of the above screen and how do I proceed? Mot of testdisk documentation says "Choose the paritions to recover..." but I do not have a partition. What do I do to recover my data? I don't mind reformatting my entire HDD, but I need to get some jpegs and movie files off it first.

Ubuntu :: Hiding Windows (NTFS) Partitions But Still Have Access

Feb 3, 2010

I still have to dual boot with Windows (for now!) but having the various NTFS partitions show up in Nautilaus, etc. is a problem. Also I would like to share some data between Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10 but I cannot create any more partitions due to well know limitations. In my case I already have 3 primary Windows partitions that I want to keep and 1 primary Linux with ext4 and swap as logicals for Ubuntu. BTW my laptop had all 4 primaries used up an I got rid 1 for Ubuntu. I could get rid of more but really do not want to now.

I found many great ideas and suggestions here in the forums but could not find exactly what I was looking for so I cobbled together a couple of I ideas and I think I have a working solution.First to hide a Windows partition and protect it this works great when you add this line to fstab:

Quote:

/dev/sda2 /Windows/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults,umask=777 0 0

Of course change your partition to the correct one and make sure the /Windows directories are created.I have used this many times and it works great except I want to have access to 1 or 2 directories without exposing the whole drive.I turned to symbolic links to help solve but when sda2 is "hidden" with the above there is a rights problem for my normal user. I could probably solve it with umask somehow but I just did this instead:

Quote:

/dev/sda2 /Windows/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0

I found this allows me to access the directory but it is still hidden from Nautilaus. I am guessing it is because it is mounted in a location it does not normally look in.After this I created a symbolic link to the directories I want access like this:

Quote:

ln -s /Windows/sda2/Temp /home/myuser/windir

Note I did not use sudo here because that was causing me rights problems at one time. This is permanent until you rm the windir file since symbolic links are just special files.

So now I can access windir in my home directory on the NTFS partition without me accidentally messing up my other Windows system files. If I try hard I can mess it up but this provides just enough protection for me. I can also drag the link to my desktop or the Naultilaus left nav pane and it acts like a regular directory.I sure there are a 100 ways to achieve what I wanted to do but thought I would share this method since it took me a while to figure it out.

Ubuntu :: Preserving File Timestamps On NTFS Partitions

Apr 5, 2010

I'm using two NTFS formatted partitions. One is internal and holds all my data. The other is on an external hard disk and is where I back up all my data to. What I'd like to do is copy all my files from the data partition to the backup partition and preserve all the windows' timestamps (including the file creation dates). How hard can this be? Well it appears that in the case of Ubuntu the answer is very hard indeed.I'm aware that Linux does not support the concept of a file creation date natively. However, according to the ntfs-3g website, all of the windows' timestamps (including the creation date) are mapped on to the system.ntfs_times extended attribute (link). So if you preserve the extended attributes when making a copy then, in theory at least, the timestamps should also be preserved.

I read on another forum that a file's timestamps will be listed (albeit in an unreadable hex format) if you run the following command:getfattr -h -e hex -n system.ntfs_times <filename>Unfortunately however, I just cannot get it to work. With every file I've tried I simply get a message saying "no such attribute".
