Is there any way to Merge hard drive partitions? I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? I am using 10.10, by the way.
View 4 RepliesMy laptop has 80GB HDD Space, and sometime ago I installed fedora 13 inside windows with 15 gb space for it. Now, I have removed windows and the disk space is recovered. So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have Ubuntu 9.04 installed on my HP Pavilion A1213W alongside Windows XP. Problem is, I no longer need the XP partition (finally) but I would like to reclaim the rest of the hard drive for Ubuntu.
I'm planning on wiping the XP partition with GParted and then (hopefully) I can merge the unallocated space with my existing 9.04 partition without having to reinstall Ubuntu and lose all my stuff. Is there a way to do this? I have nothing to back my hard drive up to other than a 2 gig flash drive.
So I recently got a WD MyPassport external hdd with 500gb capacity. I formatted it to NTFS so that it would be more efficient transferring data between my Ubuntu and Win7 dual boot. But now I want know if it is possible for me to create a 100gb FAT32 partition on the external without destroying the data on it.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi used to have 2 partitions: ubuntu and windows. i removed windows and currently am trying to merge it into ubuntu using GParted. however for some reason Gparted won't allow me to increase the size of my ubuntu partition. if you look at the picture that is attached, i need to merge /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 . does anybody know why i can't merge them or if there is other software i can you for it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm working with an older PC that belongs to my parents. They've been using Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems, and with 10.4s release, I planned to upgrade them to the newest version. The system's specs are as follows:
1.5ghz Athlon XP CPU
1.5gb RAM (PC 2700)
20gb hdd (IDE)
I have tried both the Ubuntu 9.10 (two different discs) and a 10.4 install CD and both give me the same issue. The installation proceeds along swimmingly until partitioning comes up. The partition table simply shows no hard drives. I have heard of this issue occurring with SATA drives and motherboard settings, but what could make it happen to an old IDE drive? Any odd-ball motherboard settings or anything that might need to be changed? GParted and the Live disc (along with the currently installed version of Ubuntu) recognize drives and can navigate them. What gives?
I just bought a new 2 TB hard disk to replace my old 175 gig one. I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

I would like to expand my lucid partition now and eventually get rid of my 9.10 partition. I've got an 80GB virtualbox file sitting on sda1 that I need and want to expand sda2 now so I can first copy the VB file over, then expand sda2 completely. I just finished creating sda3 ext4, but cant figure out how to merge it with sda2 (well really sda6). Please see image. [URL]
I've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......
Ubuntu 10.10 I would like to access the partitions of my hard drive from the Places menu. They show up there, but when I click them, the menu just closes. I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..

My laptop came preinstalled with windows 7, I wanted ubuntu but needed windows to update my zune so I have both operating systems on my laptop. I only used windows for my zune, that was its sole purpose, now my zune is broken and I no longer need windows at all.
First, I downloaded about 20gb of music off of my zune and onto my windows partition, is there any way to transfer files like these from one partition to another? I don't know if that makes sense.
Second, can I unpartition my hard drive so it is purely ubuntu ** without losing all my ubuntu files and stuff **? If that wasn't clear, I want my laptop to just have ubuntu, I want the 40-some gb that I dedicated to windows back for ubuntu, and I don't want to lose all my files, settings, etc. that I already have on my ubuntu partition. Can this be done?

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my latop. I have an older 80 gig HP laptop with Windows XP. Currently, i have XP as the NTFS drive and it takes up about 72 gigs of space, the swap drive for ubuntu is about 256 MB and the ext-3 drive is 2.5 gigs. However, i have no more hard drive space to run or instal any programs on Ubuntu. So what i need to do is decrease the NTFS drive as i still have over 30 gigs of free space on my laptop and increase the ext3 drive to about 10 or 15 gigs and increase the swap drive?

What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. I am using ffmpeg for merge wav files to a mov video. My doing is below
1. First extract audio (wav file) from video
2. Create wav file from mp3 track 1
3. Create wav file from mp3 track 2
4 Merge extract audio from video with track 1 and track2.
Now finally create a new video with original video's video stream and merged audio stream.
Process is working. However final video is 3-4 times greater than original one. I want that final video should be near about size of original video. As I understand, all three wav files (created from ) make video larger.

I was asked to merge the drives to be seen as one 800GB hard drive, my biggest fear is that we had set up Samba to share folders between fedora 9 giving specific users access to specific files saved on the Prolient server, will those settings be lost.And could you call that a File Server or do you have to enter any more settings And also if anyone could point me to a tutorial on Logical Volume Management and Raid specifically for fedora 9

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.
