Ubuntu Installation :: Merge Ubuntu & Swap Into Extended / Logical Partitions

I have a dual boot on my laptop between XP and Ubuntu with a storage partition.that gives me total of 4 primary partition
-Windows
-Storage
-Ubuntu
-Swap
I now want to add a OSX to my laptop in tripple booth. I did shrink the windows partition and now I realized that all my partitions are primary and cannot create a new one with the space I shrink from windows.Is it possible to merge ubuntu and its swap into extended/logical partitions so I can create a new primary for Mac OS X?

I have a RHEL4 system with 2 250GB physical volumes. There is a boot partition that is outside LVM and 2 logical volumes (swap and root) within a single volume group. This volume group bridges the 2 physical volumes.
I would like to clone this system onto a single 1 TB physical volume that will replace the 2x250GB currently in use.

I want to put a 2Gb swap file on sda2.

Why is this only copying 1.0kB? Do I need to format the extended drive first? I have tried specifying the block size and count a number of different ways with the same results.

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

After fixing drive partition numbers, I got the following error from cfdisk: Code: FATAL ERROR: Bad logical partition 6: enlarged logical partitions overlap Press any key to exit cfdisk However, I can see all my partitions with fdisk and gparted, I can mount and use all of them.I used the following guide to fix the drive numbers order: Reorder partition drive numbers in linux | LinkedBits Does somebody know whet is cfdisks problem and how can I fix it?

My laptop has 80GB HDD Space, and sometime ago I installed fedora 13 inside windows with 15 gb space for it. Now, I have removed windows and the disk space is recovered. So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.

I'm setting up my laptop to dual boot (default Vista installation and Ubuntu). There's also a possibility I may add XP later as a triple boot.
My laptop came with two partitions already, the second one labelled "Recovery". I was planning on adding three partitions, one for the Ubuntu installation, one for Swap, and one for storing my files (accessible to both OSs). However, this would be five partitions (or six, if I add XP later).
I've never had to deal with this many partitions before and just learned about the maximum of four primary partitions.

I have first installed Windows7 to sda2 (sda1 being the MBR). Then I installed Ubuntu as follows: sda3 /boot, sda5 swap (sda4 being the Extended partition), sda6 /, sda7 /home. So far so good. Windows and Ubuntu worked fine. I also planned to create another partition for data and two more partitions for Arch Linux. And here is the problem.I just assumed that the Extended partitions were created logical but actually they are also primary. So, as things stand, all my 7 partitions are primary and I cannot create any more partitions.I must've erred somewhere during the Ubuntu installation. Is it possible ti change the Extended partitions into logical, without affecting all the stuff within? Any ideas? Otherwise I will have to delete everything after Windows and install Ubuntu again, making sure that I create logical partitions in the Extended part

I need to remove Ubuntu 10.04 and so I therefore need to remove sda5 and sda6, right? Upon deleting sda5 in Gparted it tells me to "unmount any logical partitions having a number higher than 5".

I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

I have extended a logical volume from a partition on one disk into a entirely seperatedisk.I wish to extend the file system from the original partition onto the newly extend volume.I attempted this using extend2fs but it did not work, and did not mention why.The command I used was -$ sudo resize2fs /dev/glab1/glab-share1/I attempted this on ubuntu server 10.04.

Is there a limit to the number of partitions/logical volumes you can create using the partman-auto recipes? If not, any thoughts on why my preseed using the values included below results in only a /boot partition and logical volumes root, swap, and user? Is there another way to achieve putting /, /tmp, /var, /usr, /usr_local /opt, etc on their own logical volumes with preseeding?

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

what exactly are my 'swap 3.1gb' and 'extended 3.1gb' partitions for? are they necessary? what would happen if i deleted them? do they have to be that big (thinking about loading ubuntu to 20gb HDD partition, but at 6gb for the other stuff, #ouch#)? What does ubuntu do about very low space when installing (i.e. in reference to the 20gb part)? why does ubuntu have these but no other Operating Systems do? Would i lose any performance without them?

I am using my flashdrive to install. I allocated 200gb for window 7 ult and used partition magic to format the rest to ext3 and swap for DISK 1. But when I try to install Ubuntu, installation can't seem to find the ext3 or the swap. It only sees my other drive in RAID 1.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 for a friend on his new laptop. First I shrunk his Windows partition and then installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from the Live-CD. Everything worked perfectly and he is very pleased. However I noticed one strange thing. When I ran GParted on the installed Ubuntu Desktop I noted that Ubuntu was installed on an extended partition, /dev/sda4, with the ext4 root file system on /dev/sda7 and three linux swap partitions each of 7.85 GiB. Only one of these swaps partitions is "on", ie with a key next to it. The other two seem to be just wasted space. Why did the install partition three swap spaces?
On a similar theme, on my own machine I installed 11.04 next to my 10.04. This time it installed two additional swap spaces (see problem above). I removed them both and altered the fstab to the UUID of the existing 10.04 swap space and it works perfectly. So my second question is why doesn't the install use existing swap spaces rather than creating new one(s)?

i used to have 2 partitions: ubuntu and windows. i removed windows and currently am trying to merge it into ubuntu using GParted. however for some reason Gparted won't allow me to increase the size of my ubuntu partition. if you look at the picture that is attached, i need to merge /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 . does anybody know why i can't merge them or if there is other software i can you for it?

I've got a 500gb hard drive.
-sda1 is 400gb (ubuntu 9.10/32bit/ext3)
-sda2 is 50gb (ubuntu 10.04/64bit/ext4)
I would like to expand my lucid partition now and eventually get rid of my 9.10 partition. I've got an 80GB virtualbox file sitting on sda1 that I need and want to expand sda2 now so I can first copy the VB file over, then expand sda2 completely. I just finished creating sda3 ext4, but cant figure out how to merge it with sda2 (well really sda6). Please see image. [URL]

I was trying to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows Vista laptop. The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

Is there any way to Merge hard drive partitions? I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? I am using 10.10, by the way.

Something bad happened to my partition table, so right now I'm working from a Live CD. My partition table is completely screwed, although the data on the lost partitions hasn't been overwritten. I've been messing around with TestDisk for about an hour, but I still didn't figure out how to fix my problem.
Before the crash, I had 5 partitions:
And here comes the extended partition:
TestDisk can see all those five partitions. I can mark swap as Logical, but I can't do so with the 400GB NTFS partition - there is just no selection. Turning on "expert mode" didn't help. I have read about using sfdisk to fix partition table, but I don't think I'm able to do it by myself.

I've filled sizes according to TestDisk's findings. First 3 partitions were OK, the problem lies in the extended partition holding 2 logical ones.

I have the following disk partitions from the left side of partition table as of now:
NTFS - Primary windows vista
Extended - 3 Nos. all NTFS - middle one contains data
Unallocated space
NTFS - Primary
NTFS - Primary HP Recovery
My intention is to add unallocated space to the extended partition. Will I be able to use Gparted to do it?
Or can I install Ubuntu in one of the extended partitions and make this unallocated partition the home partition for Ubuntu. I am not able to add new partition in this unallocated space as disk manager in vista throws up an error no free disk space to complete the operation. I read in some forum that OEM installations allow only 3 primary partitions and one extended or 4 primary ones. Is it true for OEM's only or its a universal rule?

I have three hard drives in my computer That I want to make RAID 0. All of them already have partitions and data on them. What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. Or would it easier/better/possible to do this with LVM? Even if I'd have to shrink partitions and copy data to a new LVM one to get it set up properly, would it be better than RAID 0?
