I am trying to setup a H/W RAID-1 matrix but I am unsuccessful. I am trying to get partitions installed as /dev/md0, /dev/md1 but it keeps going for /dev/mapper/isw...The reason is that I have R1Soft backup and it needs to hook the partitions as seen in /proc/partitions from /dev not /dev/mapper/isw. I have tried to boot the installation with various options but nothing!

Recently, I created a device sc0 through device mapper. The divice could be found in /dev/mapper/sc0. My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using CentOS 5.2. I am installing from disc on a machine with Intel Embedded Server Raid Technology. It has two 500 GB SATA drives. During the initial boot process, it sees that these two devices exist. However, after getting into the screen to partition and configure RAID, it just shows this:

I want to do a RAID1 so that the disks are mirrored. However, I would expect to see both drives listed. I can select RAID to create RAID partitions, but I think I need to be able to see both drives in order to do this correctly.
I am trying to prevent the dm_mod and friends from loading during install.I am installing by PXE boot with NFS and kickstart files over http. This works fine for other machines.Ok, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with 8gig ram, PERC 6/i raid controller.The raid has 8 1TB drives in it, so the total size of the device is >2TB.There is also an SATA drive, which is NOT on the raid controller.
The problem is, I want to install CentOS on the SATA drive. The SATA drive comes up as a device-mapper drive, with a big crazy device name.This is ok, but the problem is, when the system goes to boot, it just says 'missing operating system'.I can't boot from the raid because it is large enough to require a GPT partition, and CentOS says it can't boot from a GPT partition.The SATA drive would work FINE if I could just prevent the damn device mapper from loading, so that I could install on the SATA drive in ordinary SATA mode.
I have tried re-squashing the stage2.img with /etc/modprobe.conf with alias dm_mod off and such, no luck.I also tried adding an /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, that did not work either.I also tried putting blacklist= dm_mod in the kickstart file, but that seems to be a fedora-only option and it kills my install. any ideas on preventing the dm_mod et. al. from loading at install time??

how to get around this? I tried yum clean all, then yum update, again but it did the same. I had other deps missing on other servers but yum clean all fixed them -- can't find anyone else who's had this specific issue either, nor an rpm called 'device-mapper-event' or the other things that are missing - am kinda stuck!
I got two harddisks, sda and sdb. Is it possible to install Debian root into software raid partitions sda2 and sdb1 leaving all other partitions 'normal' (not-raid)? do partitions sda2 and sdb1 need to be exact same size and position?

I run many 5.2 virtual machines inside of VMWare ESX3.5 I've updated a couple of test VMs from 5.2 to 5.3. The thing that stands out is that during boot time, the sequence gets to this stage:
device-mapper: dm-raid45: intialized v0.2429 Waiting for driver initialization.
Here it takes about 3 times longer than the previous Centos 5.2 (about 9 seconds instead of 3). Whereas inside a physical box the wait in 5.3 is the same as it was in 5.2
I have DELL R310 server with PERC 200H controller and RAID 5 configured already.This is my first time I want to install CentOS and seems like a new challenge for me I've read some articles on Wiki and posts on this forum and didn't find any information how to install CentOS on RAID 5.I only noticed that if there is fake or software RAID1 it should be switched off and made by OS configuration.I think PERC 200H is separate controller so RAID 5 is hardware RAID, is there anybody who can confirm ?My problem is that when I try to install CentOS it doesn't see any hard disks ... I looked for drivers on DELL web site and there is driver for Red Hat 6. I tried to install it using linux dd command but it doesn't recognize. Is there anybody else who met such problem ?

I am attempting to set up an IBM Intellistation Z Pro to optionally boot from many OS versions. One of these is Windows XP. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives. These are SATA drives. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SIL3124-2 chip. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good.
I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.
The big question is
1) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.

2) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use.
I have got a server which has a motherboard with nvidia mediashield raid built in, with Centos installed it picked up the raid 5 array that i had configured as one drive so the os install was straight forward. When i booted the netinstaller of opensuse 11.3 run though the setup, when getting to the partition setup is was picking up the three hdd as seperate drives and not one, so i got to a certain point and aborted the installation and i re run the installer, the raid status said the array was degarded or something which i knew there was nothing wrong with it as i had set it up only about 2 weeks ago and there was one drive missing aswell. So i removed the array and re configured the array and rebooted and the raid status said healthy again as it was before on centos, then i run the opensuse installer again and it went though the process again but completely stop at "Searching for linux partitions" , cursor was working fine , but nothing else was so i had to press reset.
This was my problem, i know kind of what the problem is, but what i want to know is , i thought opensuse is based on rhel same as centos but how comes centos has the drivers for the raid chip i have in my board and opensuse has not.
I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller.The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured.The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card.The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.
The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).
I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.
Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.
Currently I am attempting to install Centos 5.2 64bit onto a Supermicro X7DCL-3 motherboard based machine. The Raid recognizes the HDD that's been installed into it, however, the drivers for the raid are not included in the install. After contacting Supermicro I've been supplied with a driver package that should fix the problem.[URL]However, I am still having trouble using the package in order to find the HDD (The only HDD in the machine) that is on the raid.I think I'm doing something that's should be fairly simple, but am screwing it up pretty bad.

I am trying to install Centos onto a Poweredge 2650, with Dell Poweredge Expandable Raid Controller. I have 5 SCSI disks installed, and have created and initialised 2 logical volumes via the SCSI controller setup utility (Ctrl M after boot). After reboot the system reports two logical volumes present.
The Centos installer cannot find any disks when it gets to the disk partitioning/setup step. It reports no disks present. Do I need a specific driver for this controller?
If I have a windows installed in raid-0, then install virtualbox and install all my linux os,s to virtualbox will they be a raid-0 install without needing to install raid drivers?

First though I just wanted to check that I could partition off the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the 2TB drive (leaving 1.5TB or more free) and install Debian to that part, then use the remainder of the disk in combination with the 2x 1.5 TB drives in RAID 5? i.e. can you mix whole drives and with partitions from other drives in RAID 5 and/or is it best to just stick with complete drives for the RAID array?I only have room for 3 drives in the small mATX case that houses my NAS device and I want to maximise storage capacity and minimise expense.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo, over the next couple of days I'm going to be building a new file server based on Ubuntu with three 2TB drives (and possibly a pair of 500GB drives I already own) in RAID 5 using mdadm. I'm under the impression that I would be able to add the 500GB drives using mdadm; while all drives need to be of the same capacity for hardware RAIDs, software RAIDs are able to work with different-sized volumes. Is this correct?
i right in thinking that mdadm presents the RAID as a drive which can then be used like a single drive would be? create a logical partition within the RAID formatted with HFS+ which can be used for network-based Time Machine backups for a few Macs in my house.Now, this is where I particularly show my ignorant side: is it possible to create a logical partition with a variable size? Similar to how a virtual hard drive works with some virtual machines; a "drive" may take up to 200GB, for example, but is only as large as the amount of data it stores. If it is possible, is this only for certain partition formats?
I have three hard drives in my computer That I want to make RAID 0. All of them already have partitions and data on them. What I want to know is if I can, without losing data, add the disks to RAID and then merge the partitions? All the partitions are of the same type. Or would it easier/better/possible to do this with LVM? Even if I'd have to shrink partitions and copy data to a new LVM one to get it set up properly, would it be better than RAID 0?

View 4 Replies View RelatedGoogling tells you how to resize RAID partitions but not how to resize the underlying disk partitions. In my particular case, I initially sized a RAID array way too large - and when I added another disk to the array, I decided I was wasting too much space.I shrunk the file system, then "grew" the array (/dev/md2) to the smaller size, and resized the file system again to fit. However the actual disk partitions (/dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, etc.) are still the original size - they are just mostly unused space.As I understand it, the superblocks are at the end of the partition. I believe this means the end of space used by the array on each device, so that the superblock moved to a lower block number when I shrunk the array. However it also means that I need to get the new physical partition size correct to avoid clobbering the superblock.
Is there an easy way to get any partition editor to shrink the physical partitions to the new array size?If not, is the superblock included in the space allocated to the array so that the next partition can start in the very next block, or is it added after the array so I'd need to allow some space for it?
I am going to be using CentOs 5.4 for a home storage server. It will be RAID6 on 6 x 1TB drives. I plan on using an external enclosure which is connected via two SFF-8088 cables (4 drives a piece). I am looking to try and find a non-RAID HBA which would support this external enclosure and allow to use standard linux software raid.
If this is not an option, I'd consider using a hardware based raid card, but they are very expensive. The Adaptec 5085 is one option but is almost $800. If that is what I need for this thing to be solid then that is fine, I will spend the money but I am thinking that software raid may be the way to go.
I need to set up a RAID 1 array on Squeeze. I have 3 partitions: sda1 is root, sda5 is home, and sda6 is swap. (sda2 is the extended partition containing home and swap. This was a clean installation, so I don't know what happened to sda3 and sda4...)
All the information that I've been able to find recommends doing something like this:
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=mirror --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
Do I need to type a separate command for each partition, or is there a better way to do it? Also, should I use the UUID instead of the dev names?
We have a server with RAID 0 with 4 hard disks on it each 250 GB. Linux kernel must find one hard disk named: /dev/sda with 1TB capacity. right? And also we have 2 partitions on sda: sda1 and sda2. We want to add another partition but we don't have enough space.

I have been trying to upgrade my server to Ubuntu 10.04 since it has come out, but I hit a roadblock with my hardware RAID I have two JBODs that work perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10 x64 - but show as seperate, unformatted partitions (one per hdd) in Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Here's the relevant portion of my fstab:

Its from a Synology Box with 3 disks, which one is damaged. But this disk wasnt in use.Take a look on the raid-size of 493 GB - and the both available disks with 250GB..)
On the others there were a linear raid. during this damaged disk the synology-device tells me, that the volume was crashed.But it look like, that this disk was not mounted into this volume.Quote:
