I am writing this from my new MozillaFirefox browser, operational for 3 minutes.I started researching Linux Dec 27th, bot a couple of books, bookmarked about 20 sites c/w howto', FAQ's, LinuxBook, etc., printed about 250 text files (exhausted my lazer printer), downloaded/burnt DVD's for Slackware 13.1, Mandriva 10.1, utorrent (x windows so I could download it all), Easus Partition Manager and am finally here.
I couldn't get Slack to boot, nor could I get Mandriva to go either it has taken me 1+ month to get here. Finally gave up on booting from a usb and external hdd (thanks to a pair of SATA you know whats!)Yesterday, I repartioned my C drive (ooops, sda) and loaded up Mandriva...couldnt get it to function either. Tonight, went through the driver install program available with the load disc and read (& wrote down) the driver "failure" output. Reloaded the DVD, chose upgrade vs install, got to the hardware configuration screen and played with my video and sound settings, and voila
i installed slackware then i unistalled it and installed debian then i decided to go back to slackware but it wont boot because i have the grub boot loder how do i fix this
I am trying to setup a PXE booting environment in my network and I almost got it to work... Only it does not quite work yet... Basically, I want my laptop or any other machines to boot from my network. I followed the instructions from AlienBob to do so. I setup my laptop to boot from the NIC, it automatically gets an IP from the DHCP server (pfSense);
I setup my gateway/DHCP server (pfSense) as is: -The IP address from the network boot server: 192.168.0.101 (the server where my slackware mirror and all tftp boot files are) -The filename used for network booting: /mnt/it-maintenance/tftpboot/slackware-13.1/pxelinux.0 (the absolute address of pxelinux.0 in my server)
I setup the network boot server (running slack 13.1) as is: -uncommented the line in inetd.conf to have:
Code: tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd in.tftpd -s /tftpboot -r blksize -added a NFS share to /etc/exports to have: Code: /mnt/it-maintenance/operating-systems/slackware-13.1 192.168.0.106(ro,sync,insecure,all_squash)
I have just reinstalled slackware on my old p4 3.2 box clean install formatted hard drive no other packages installed.is there something seriously changed from slack 10 to slack 13.1 ?? or do i suffer from C.R.S ( cant remember s***)
create a VM here with virsh. I've managed to create the XML file and got it to work properly, however running it is the problem. These are the errors I get error: Failed to start domain Cent-OS, internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: open /dev/kvm: No such file or directory ,Could not initialize KVM, will disable KVM support qemu: could not open disk image /media/55D123D9E79ABF54/VM/Cent-OS-5.5.img: Permission denied
I was downloading a new OS on my computer, it was going to be a dual boot, and then my computer froze. When I restarted my computer I couldn't boot my old OS or install the new OS. When I go to recovery mode I don't know what to do, it says to either enter the root password or press ctrl+d to skip the recovery. How do I enter the root pass? Just entering the pass by itself makes it says 'bash: no job control in this shell'

I had issues on my last install , I couldn't boot into it cause I accidentally uninstalled python 2.6 and everything it was attached to. So I reinstalled on a separate hard drive, I can see my other file system from the media folder but the only thing in my home dir is these 2 files 1 read me that says
PHP Code:
THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.
From the graphical desktop, click on:
or
From the command line, run:
And then this file
Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop
But when I click it and try to run it I get this error
i got 2 live cds with 5 distros on each. i decided to test the distros on my macbook but I couldn't boot from the Live CD using reboot and holding down "c", so I selected the Live CD as my startup disk. so i experimented with fedora, tested mint, and played with pradus.
After installing Slack 13.37 on one of my systems while using my own (non-standard) kernel it refused to boot as the harddisk couldn't be found anymore. Investigation yielded that the ahci.ko driver wasn't loaded (but libahci.ko was). However I listed both ahci.ko and libahci.ko in the mkinitrd -m parameter so there had to be an error in the new /sbin/mkinitrd script. It turned out that a grep at the end of the script weeded out my ahci.ko module as the searchterm "ahci.ko" was already detected in the modprobe line for libahci.ko.
I decided to fix it in an easy way : I just prepend a "space" in front of the module name at the line where the grep is called :
I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:
And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.
I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...
My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.
I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.
This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.
I'm receiving the following error message when running LILO under SystemRescueCD after installing Slackware 12.2 (the slackware setup hung when installing LILO so I am trying to install manually - I have re-run setup, including formatting all drives again):FATAL: Trying to map files from unnamed device 0x0010 (NFS/Raid mirror down?)Let me know if any more information is necessary and thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I recently lost the default panel from the top task bar, a message appeared on boot up saying a config file was missing or couldn't load - or something to that effect. I didn't realise to what it was referring until the computer (an Acer One) completed its start up and I could see the desktop
How can I restore the panel? (graphic from my other Ubuntu laptop attached showing the default panel appearance)
I once used an alternate key as a shortcut of deleting in dolphin. After that, I want to revert to the default key DEL in dolphin so I reset the shortcuts. But I find it doesn't work any more. What's more the shortcut notice following the "Move to Trash" in the right click menu also goes away, i.e. just a blank, shown in attachment. What should I do?

I used locate cmd to search file abc.txt (for example) as I didn't know in which directory it would be present and couldn't find it. But when I did find . -name abc.txt, it traced the file, luckily the file was in the same directory. I am wondering how find was able to search abc.txt and locate not. How these two are behavinb differently? Usually I use locate when I don't know the path to the parent dir.
