I used locate cmd to search file abc.txt (for example) as I didn't know in which directory it would be present and couldn't find it. But when I did find . -name abc.txt, it traced the file, luckily the file was in the same directory. I am wondering how find was able to search abc.txt and locate not. How these two are behavinb differently? Usually I use locate when I don't know the path to the parent dir.

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

Using a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop...I just rebuilt another computer (Ubuntu 10.04-Server) and when I attempt to ssh to the box I of course have the ssh key from the old install. I get the messageQuote:Add correct host key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.Offending key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts:3So how do I determine which key is hosts:3? It is not the third key in the known_hosts file - I deleted that one and got the same error. As I only have 4 other computers on my network I generally just delete all entries from known_hosts when I reinstall the OS on one of the others. It is about time I learn how to do it correctly

I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I am running Mandriva x64 and the nepoumuk file indexing was causing system hangups (in addition to not returning any results) so i disabled it. However kfind is not returning any results either - i feel a bit stupid and I'm sure there's a simple answer to this but How do i locate files under Mandriva linux? Is there a simple KDE application for that or do i need to look at kfind settings? Does file search only work with indexed database?

I had fedora 12 working nicely and tried to add Compiz. That has caused my laptop to hang with the cursor blinking. I can get to the virtual windows with Ctl-Alt-Fx keys. However I am not sure what to fix.I had run Dmesg and it is complaining that it can not locate the Nvidia driver. I believe it mentions Nvidia.ko but will need to verify that.My thought was that if I just did an "upgrade" maybe that wold restore the GUI and I could go forward from that. I am trying to get awaay from the MS world.

What's more the shortcut notice following the "Move to Trash" in the right click menu also goes away, i.e. just a blank, shown in attachment. What should I do?

I want to print, using locate, all the paths that contain the element /bin/ but only one instance of each one. If I issue 'locate /bin/' then I have many screens of text with, for example,
/usr/bin/foo1
/usr/bin/foo2
/home/me/bin/foo3
whereas I want to see only
/usr/bin/foo1
/home/bin/foo3
That is to say, if in two lines /bin/ appears with the same prefix (in the example above the prefixes would be /usr and /home/me) I only want to print the first line. Can I pipe locate to grep to do this? I've mentioned locate because it does not scan the whole disk.

I am writing this from my new MozillaFirefox browser, operational for 3 minutes.I started researching Linux Dec 27th, bot a couple of books, bookmarked about 20 sites c/w howto', FAQ's, LinuxBook, etc., printed about 250 text files (exhausted my lazer printer), downloaded/burnt DVD's for Slackware 13.1, Mandriva 10.1, utorrent (x windows so I could download it all), Easus Partition Manager and am finally here.
I couldn't get Slack to boot, nor could I get Mandriva to go either it has taken me 1+ month to get here. Finally gave up on booting from a usb and external hdd (thanks to a pair of SATA you know whats!)Yesterday, I repartioned my C drive (ooops, sda) and loaded up Mandriva...couldnt get it to function either. Tonight, went through the driver install program available with the load disc and read (& wrote down) the driver "failure" output. Reloaded the DVD, chose upgrade vs install, got to the hardware configuration screen and played with my video and sound settings, and voila

What do I need to add to my .emacs to get it to save all of my autosaves and backups into one directory? I don't do a lot of .emacs configuration, and I just can't get the variables out of emacsWiki to play right. Anybody mind sharing how they do it? I would prefer to have the saves placed in /tmp/emacs/{username}/{autosaves | backups}
BONUS, configuration to do the same for TRAMP
