I just updated from FC 10 to FC 12 via install/upgrade disk, and when re-booted the screen is then black (at the point that it should display logins). I think it may be due to nvidia driver in FC 10 not being upgraded, because I think I compiled it from nvidia rather from yum install. Anybody else have this problem? BTW, it is a dual boot with Win XP, but has never caused a similar problem before.

I then get to a black screen with a X mouse cursor, i can move the cursor freely and i can turn the Num Lock key on and off and i can do a Ctrl+Alt+F5 and then reboot with a Ctrl+Alt+Del smoothly, but i just cant get the centos to boot up all the way into the GUI.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to update my main computer from Ubuntu 10.0 to 11.04. I wish I could remember what it said, but it crashed during the update. The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. I am going to try a fresh install. For some reason I am leaning to the power manager, but I am no where near sure.

View 16 Replies View RelatedSo I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora. This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Zorin OS onto the hard drive of my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. I used the entire drive, overwriting Ubuntu9.10. Now my screen is black. I think the system loaded correctly - I can hear some welcome music and the active l.e.d. of my drive slows and stops flickering. But I can't see anything! Here's what I tried:
- using the keyboard controls to increase the brightness (no effect).
- connecting a flatscreen monitor from my desktop and attempting to use the FN+f6 keys to change the display from the laptop screen to the other (no effect)
- rebooting
- rebooting into Setup (my laptop screen lights up for perhaps 5 seconds and then goes black again)
- rebooting with Ubuntu 9.04 CD in the drive (no response)
- attempting to reboot with my original Windows ME re-installation disc in the drive (no effect)

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my windows box.I boot with the CD (reset), it starts, I get a black screen with a small logo on the bottom. After a while (with the CD working), the screen goes blank. At this point, the machine reads some more from the CD and then stops... with the screen blank. On the hardrive I have a partition from an older version of linux (Ubuntu 8.something), just the user directories (the partition where I had Linux was killed when I reinstalled Windows).
The machine remains in that state (I've left it on overnight), no HD activity, nothing. Only response I can coax out of it is when I press ctrl+alt+del, and the machine reboots (still, screen is black, no shutdown message).
I have an Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi laptop, that I purchased 5 years ago. It has the following:AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile Technology TL50 (1.6GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)ATI Radeon Xpress 1100120GB PATA HDD hard drive (60 gigs for the C: drive FAT32, 60 for the D: drive, NTFS)I have Windows XP Media Center edition installed on my pc, and I want to install linux. This is my first time installing linux on anything. My laptop's cd drive doesn't work, so I wanted to boot from a USB or from hard disk. I googled around and found unetbootin, which I ran. When I ask it to use the hard disk, I select Debian stable and the one where it loads everything up beforehand, not the netboot. This is because the netboot option wasn't working - it gave me a similar problem. Anyways, I boot up, and I have a choice between unetbootin and windows xp. When I choose unetbootin, it says:
