I guess I messed around with my computer a little too much when I was bored. I tried installing compiz and emerald and my computer locked up. Rebooted and then it stays on a black screen. Rebooted and tried safe mode now. Removed emerald by command prompt to see if that would work and rebooted.
View 3 RepliesI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
I have tried booting from 2 different Ubuntu CD's (10-04-01 and 10-10) and a Fedora CD.All 3 CD's do the same thing, in Ubuntu I just see the first screen (Keyboard/Battery on the bottom with the guy next to it) and then the screen goes black but the lights, that indicate there's a computer connected and transmitting info onto the screen, are still on.
I know the CD's aren't the problem because they work on 2 other computers I have.The CD drive isn't the problem because took it out of a working computer and that booted up fine with the CD's.I've restored BIOS to default settings.I've tried booting with 1 stick of ram at a time but still doesn't boot.I've left the computer on for 3 hours but nothing appeared on the screen and the lights never turned off. It was just a black screen, nothing on it, not even a blinking cursor.I know it's capable of booting up CD's because the Windows XP setup disc boots.
I've installed Ubuntu on another PC and most things are great except fore the black screen that you get when you start the PC (just before the Ubuntu Logo). It stays black for 20 seconds. Is there something I can do to make it shorter like on my other PC.

After I boot into setup, it stays at a black screen. It did that when I was installed Ubuntu, the first time. I don't know how exactly it ended up working, after a lot of different things I was able to get it to boot.

When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. However yesterday that did not work but that was the first time. View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

Ubuntu Server 11.04 64bit seems to work fine on my Dell - most of the time at least. Sometimes upon boot, the screen stays black after grub. If it does boot correctly, I can find the following in dmesg:

I booted up and it hung on the 'mounting file system', I left it for ages and eventually it goes to a black screen and prints out an error message, I can't type anything on my keyboard.

It finds and connects my wireless router fine, and it will bring up web pagers initially, but after about 30 seconds i loose access to the web. i keep my ip address and and all the connection stays the same however i cant load any web pages and i cant download or check to see new updates so i know its not just Firefox.

What is happening is that every now and then my cpu load jumps up to 90-100% and just stays there. Programs that typically take a 1-5% of the cpu load start taking up around 40-50% of the total load. Everything bogs down to the point that only a restart fixes it. safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
Few days after installing Ubunto 9.10, during installation of gstreamer, the installation utility got stuck, and with it the whole desktop icons. (I think the gstreamer has nothing to do with it). When I tried to execute some icon, like the terminal, it will not open. After restarting the computer, I get a tty1 login terminal and not the graphical one (tty7). When pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, nothing happens. It switches to a black screen. "sudo startx", gives some error log. I already reinstalled the X-server, ubuntu desktop and other stuff.
What can be the problem? Is it related to my video card (nvidia 7600 GT)? I didn't install any nvidia specific driver. This happened to me earlier and I reinstalled Ubunto. I think maybe I should move to some other distribution.

When I run a program in fullscreen (a ..... video, for example), the taskbar stays on screen. To be abundantly clear, I mean the bar along the top with the power button and user name on it. It stays on the screen, but I can't interact with it; the mouse clicks "under" it as if it weren't there. I'm sure Compiz has something to do with it as it's as new problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I tried disabling Window Decoration, I tried setting it so it only applied to windows with !(state=fullscreen), but nothing seems to work.As a related problem, the menu button in Firefox (the one to the left of the tabs) just appeared out of nowhere. How do I make that go away? And the menu bar as a part of the taskbar doesn't work any more. Where's the option for that?

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

It's intermittent, so can not tell you what triggers it, but when it kicks off a commandline screen comes up, with a command pointing to some battery monitor software, and I have a desktop, so no battery and wonder why my machine has a battery monitoring software, when none should be installed. Anyway the screen stays up momentarily, then the system tries to go into something like a screen saver and I get all garbage on the screen, loose all ability to control and have to perform a hard reboot to recover from this.

The issue I am encountering is that everything works fine until I turn off the TV and turn it back on later, because the screen stays blank and from what the TV tells me there is no signal. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Sid xfce on my lenovo laptop. When i try to shutdown, the screen always stays on (the fans turn off). It says "reached target shutdown", then this happens: [URL] .... and then it hangs. I have to press the power button to shut it down. (I have the same problem with reboot). I had the same issues with Jessie.
Things i tried so far and didn't work:

I have no energy or wake up options at my BIOS.
I found out that i can normally reboot with the Alt + sysrq + REISUB key combination.
I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.
