I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my old Acer Travelmate 661 LCi. Device manager tells me: info.linux.driver i915. Is there a better driver, and if yes, where can I get it and how can I install it.

I really wanna use the OS. I wiped my laptop and installed it but I can't change my screen resolution (it's stuck at 1024 X 768 and my refresh rate is at 0 HZ) I tried installing a driver that was for both the i9xx and i8xx chipset family but it doesn't look like it helped anything. I want to be able to play World of Warcraft Wrath of The Lich King but when I try it the way the computer is now the the frame rate is really really slow. I also need to fix my audio because there's crackling that comes from the speakers often. I attached a screen shot of what I get when I enter the command: sudo lshw -c video Changing the resolution isn't the problem so much as the fact that I can't change the refresh rate from "0 HZ" to anything higher so that my game will play smoothly. I would also like to put compiz fushion on my laptop as well but I don't believe it will work unless I resolve this problem.

Just got World of Warcraft Installed and when I start the game after I get past the 2 cinema's while I'm trying to click yes on the rules the screen seems to bee flashing over and over and over. I was thinking maybe the 3d accelerator isn't installed or maybe I need to install something because its Intel?

I have an ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard with an integrated Atheros AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.I installed Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid" 64bit Kernel version 2.6.32.21 I have read that the driver isn't in the kernel, but there's a strange thing :
First if I try to run lspci from command line it doesn't reports Atheros Ethernet Controller.
Second If I try to run lshw -C network from command line it doesn't reports Atheros Ethernet Controller.
Third if I run ifconfig it only returns my loopback address.
Can I suppose that my Ethernet Intel Gigabit Controller is broken or that Atheros driver is missing?
Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

This is a known bug for openSUSE 11.3 and intel video cards. So, I tried some suggestions and updated my kernel to 2.6.35. Nope. Same prob. I updated Xorg, mesa, drm, cairo (had to go to Factory for that one). I finally got all the requirements met as listed on Intel Linux Graphics: 2010Q2 and I download the intel 2d driver, since it's newer than what comes with openSUSE, even in Factory (xorg-x11-driver-video-intel-legacy 2.9.1).Now, when I go to compile the driver, it errors out on ./configure.how do I let this intel driver package know where xorg-server is?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Mandriva (and predecessors) for ten years or so, but that distro really seems to be dying at the moment. Consequently, I am trying to move over my various PCs to SUSE. I've started with my EEEPC 901 which has a 945GME integrated graphics chip. Using Mandriva 2010.2 it works fine and I can have desktop effects (built into KDE) running with no problems. However, with KDE on openSUSE 11.4 I get irregular freezes, although I can still work within the focussed window. Moving around though, clicking on other parts of the desktop etc. doesn't work, then after a few seconds they all happen at once. I am getting the following error multiple times in the X log, which I suspect is associated:

I note this supposedly fixed bug report that may be relevant:[URL].. Secondly, I am getting hopeless 3D speed (glxinfo reports SGI and has all expected output). Desktop effects won't work at all, on boot it pops up a message saying they are disabled as too slow. I know it isn't a benchmark, but glxgears gives about 50, it used to give over 500. I remember a few X versions back having to enable UXA mode instead of EXA in the 'intel' driver, but presumably that is no longer needed and I cannot see any effect of doing that now (in the xorg.conf.d device file). According to the X log, X is definitely using 'intel' driver, not fb etc.
I am running Opensuse 11.4 on a file server, based on an Intel Atom motherboard with 945G graphics chipset.I recently shut down and then rebooted the server (because I needed to switch off the power for a few minutes) after it had had been running quite happily for several weeks since the last boot. for some reason the drivers for my laptop graphics are not showing up.
The laptop I have is Acer 1810T. It has intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.
I also have a desktop which has Nvidia 9800GT graphics card and the drivers for that showed up automatically when i went to additional drivers in ubuntu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed the latest debian on a dell optiplex gx260 which has a 82845G chipset and there are some strange problems.The system is configured with autologon as a standard user. Sometimes, after logging on, the screen goes black but if I connect to it with vnc, I get a working desktop. Yesterday I booted it without a display attached to it and now I cannot set it to the right screen resolution anymore (1440 x 900) which was working fine before.

! I'm thinking of buying a corei5-660 on a motherboard with an Intel H55 Express Chipset. Does anyone know if it's fully compatible with OpenSUSE 11.3? I've installed Suse linux 11.3 (kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5) on my brand new computer HP all in one 5130. Everything worked incredibly well : Wifi, wireless keyboard and mouse, sound, webcam.. There is only one remaining issue : I get a very poor resolution (1280x1024) instead of the 1920x1080 allowed by the screen. The graphic card is an intel chipset (HD graphics) integrated to an intel core i3 CPU. Here is (part of) the X11.org log :

I have been trying to enable compiz on my fedora 14, but when i enable the desktop effects the graphics just crashes and fedora freezes. When i type lspci -nnk | grep VGA for the graphics card i get:

View 6 Replies View RelatedFor years I have used a Slax live CD on a laptop to clone internal HDDs to USB HDDs. I recently purchased a Sony VPCF136FM laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU. It apparently has USB 3.0 ports. The problem is the USB ports are dead with Slax. There is a USB devise driver available for Windows 7 from Sony but nothing for Linux operating systems. Can this driver be ported to Linux? It is an exacutable (XXX.exe). The chip for the USB Host is from Renesas Electronics (no help there, either). Where can I find a device driver to use with Slax and how would I install it?

I am familiar with using linux but not the install procedure which is why I am beginning to dive into this. However, when I bring the system up off the Linux boot disk and go to install it's not even giving me the option of the controller so I can begin installing the os from the dvd-rom. This is what acer lists as the controller for the 6900: ich8 serial ata storage controller 2820 linux driver. I cannot find this driver for linux anywhere.

I am running the install on an old Dell 8400. My PC has an Intel RAID Controller built into the MB. I have 1 HDD (without RAID) (which is houses my OS install) and then I have 2 1TB drives (These are just NTFS formatted drives with binary files on them nothing more.) in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) Array. The Intel RAID Controller on Boot recognizes the Array as it always has (irrespective of which OS is installed) however, unlike Windows 7 (where I was able to install the Intel RAID controller driver) .Does anyone know of a resolution (which doesn't involve formatting and / or use of some other software RAID solution) - to get this working which my searches have not taken me too?
Does centos 5.4 support this?
