When I installed Arch Linux on my Toshiba L10 Intel Centrino laptop, it detected my video card and monitors correctly "out-of-the box". Now that I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat", it has not.
How can I configure Ubuntu to use the correct Intel drivers with my Intel 82852/855GM graphics card?

The problem is, when using "startx" the screen goes black and is frozen.
Xorg works fine with the vesa driver but is horribly slow.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my old Acer Travelmate 661 LCi. Device manager tells me: info.linux.driver i915. Is there a better driver, and if yes, where can I get it and how can I install it.

I also am having trouble with hearing videos on line, and have a problem with the drivers to be able to play dvds on my computer which I used to be able to do. there are other problems that I do not want to discuss at this time but will probably find the answers to them soon.

I've been a windows guy forever. Basically the graphics work on my laptop but won't do anything 3d right now. This makes me think i'm not using a correct driver. Anyway I used a workaround to get it working on my Toshiba Portege laptop. However from it stemmed slower graphics, no splash, et cetera. That didn't worry me too much. However, I am now at the stage where I am getting arrays of different issues (that don't necessarily relate) and I would like to just have a nice clean install. I have been upgrading since 8.something and I long for freshness. My files are allready off.
Has anyone patched the kernel or anything? I'm purely a newbish end user and have not been following launchpad or anything. I did the workaround the week of the release. any fixes floating around? If not, I'll go back to 9.10.
I recently installed the Intel 855GM Drivers and I m quite satisfied with my experience with the improved system perfrmance :] However. I am curious as to if there is a fix for the Compiz aspect. From my previous understanding as of about 3 weeks ago there weren't any available patched or fixes for that particular issue.

Ubuntu 11.04 refuses to run my labtops integrated Intel 855GM video card in OpenGL hardware accelerated mode. Everything is really slow/unresponsive compared to earlier versions, windows are rendering painfully slow etc. From what I can gather, problem is, 11.04/newest Compiz is OpenGL 1.4, and my video card only supports 1.3 (?). No luck so far.. OpenGL is still software only. Do I need to edit some ini-file or xorg.conf, or am I missing something here?
I just upgraded to 10.10 version (32 bit) and istalled gmameui along with mame. Although when i try to run gmameui preferences the program crashes, it recognizes the roms and am able to play so it doesnt really bother me. The problem is that joystick works but not properly despite jscal calibration .My joystick is recognized as js0. I reinstalled "joystick" package but the problem persists
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrade to Slackware 13.0 (then 13.1, then -current) I still have problems using the secondary video output on my old and trusted Toshiba Satellite (Intel chipset 852GM/855GM). This used to work with Slackware 12.x! The problem manifests itself by jumpiness on the secondary port. The jumps appear with any video update (eg. window focusing, but also with the updates from the Clock or the CPU graph).
This is very annoying, particularly because I use this machine to teach. In only one combination (with a NEC NP-100 projector) I can solve the problem by reprogramming the Framerate to 70 or 75 Hz. After reading many mails and references on the 'net, testing a lot of the solutions to no avail, I'm more confused than ever. And no visible improvement either. Here are a couple of the tests I did:
1) I added i915.modeset=1 to LILO. This helped in the sense that now, in text mode, the 2nd video output remains working, which is slightly useful. But no improvement after startx.
2) Xorg.0.log says:
(II) intel: Driver for Intel.....
then, continues with:
(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
Why are both drivers signalled here? (solved this by generating a new config with Xorg -configure, but no difference)
3) The intel driver says (in Xorg.log): compiled for 1.7.6, while X -version says 1.7.7 (is this significant?)
4) After this, the line
(EE) intel(1): No kernel modesetting driver detected appears in the Xorg log. This wasn't there when no xorg.conf was present.
5) On the other hand, without an xorg.conf, there was a line complaining about a missing 'fbdev', this seems solved afterwards.
6) Just in case, tried software cursor on/off.
7) Maybe unrelated: After enabling modesetting (which should have been enabled by default),LCD brightness resumes correctly after 'sleep'(before, it would switch to low brightness every time).

So far, I've figured out that 'Error 2' basically means any of probably a zillion or two possible errors. The line I have in bold is obviously the one. I have searched, dug, probed, but can not work out what it means or where to start fixing it. Reason I'm bothering at all is that yes, the Realtek card worked 'out of the box' but is pretty unreliable, a third and less the speed of the other machines in the house

View 9 Replies View RelatedIbus is very familiar to some users. And they find only one way to use Ibus as their keyboard layout. But its not possible to use ibus on Maverick Meerkat by default. you need to follow some instruction to do that. Here I am telling how I have done this...
Go to System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager (you have to give your password) type " ibus-m17 " on search box. then just install the one appears. After installation the package, just close the synaptic. Now you are done to use Ibus.
Now go to System>Administration>Language Support (it may ask you to install the Language support, just click on the "Remind me later") Then select ' ibus ' from the "Keyboard input method system" under the Language tab.
Then close the window and restart the PC.
Thats the work I have done to get the iBus on Maverick Meerkat.
Is Ubuntu going to release a second version of Ubuntu 10.10 using Unity as well as keep the Maverick Meerkat version? I don't know about you, but I already hate the Unity version. It looks like the desktop at your ATM. This could be Ubuntu's Vista.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having frequent freezing issues within Ubuntu 10.10 and it's beginning to become a regular thing. I've come to find out that it only happens when the visual effects settings are at normal or extra. Everything will be fine for whatever amount of time but after a while the entire system freezes. I get no response from ANYTHING at all, not even the keyboard/mouse. This is really annoying and I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm mostly new to the whole Linux scene. Machine Specs:

Maverick Meerkat won't boot. I have tried removing the option of quiet boot and after a whirl of text flies by the splash screen is reached, after a few seconds just blackness indefinitely. Does anybody have any suggestions of what I can do?

However, Yesterday I have downloaded the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop (32 Bit). I have made a Startup Disk using UBUNTU Startup Disk Creator for that .iso which I have downloaded yesterday. That is a USB Live Disk. But the sad news is its not being able to boot my PC. where my PC configuration is not so bad.

I can chose Shutdown from the menu but the system gets to the point where the power supply should 'click' and shut off. It doesn't, it cycles and the system reboots. It wasn't doing this in 10.04, at least not towards the end prior to updating to 10.10 beta/rc/final. Also, 10.10 didn't do this either, until recently. (Current default = 2.6.35-22-generic)
Here's the funny thing though; if I choose a previous version from the GRUB2 menu, 2.6.32-21-generic for example, the login screen won't allow mouse nor keyboard control but will shut down normally w/ a single, momentary push of the Power Button. Now, there are folks w/ a seemingly similar problem, but in their case they can't shutdown at all. My trouble is a shutdown just triggers a restart.
I've been running Ubuntu on an IBM Thinkpad T42 for about 3 years and have never had any instability but my Meerkat upgrade 10.10 about a week ago has never been right and seems to be getting worse. It's almost impossible to use the Internet. Whether Epiphany or Firefox, the screen keeps going grey and regularly freezes the computer completely so that NO keyboard commands work and only a hard restart will do. I also have problems streaming audio feeds with RP 11 or VLC. VLC is more of a problem which I find odd as it is solid in Windoze.
PS The instability isn't only Internet related. There are lots of strange little things like authentication windows not closing after I enter password and hit Enter or click OK, not being able to paste in Terminal (sometimes not others), toolbard in apps appearing differently sometimes, stuff like that.
I installed the compiz-settings-manager but the "Advanced Desktop Settings Manager" did not appear in the menu. Hence I cannot enable the Cube. Any idea what's going on here?

I have been using ubuntu for a year or so with little trouble until now. I have done a fresh install of 10.10 and my second monitor doesnt work. I have Intel G31 graphics. It was working fine with 10.4 and previously 9.4, it displays the bios splash screen and then nothing. System>preferences>monitors does not show it as present at all. Here is my lshw -C video:
