When I try to set my number of desktops to "4" on the KDE control module, it reverts back to having only two. I downloaded and installed the current ATI driver (ati-driver-installer-10-11-x86.x86_64.run) and everything works as it should with compiz, except for desktop cube, because I only have two desktops. I never had a problem while running Ubuntu, just with backtrack 4 r2. By the way, I have it installed and not running on a virtual box.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot With Backtrack4 - Partition Drive To Make Room For Bt4?

Nov 28, 2010

finally got mostly everything fixed on my opensuse 11.3. 11.3 is my only os on my laptop right now and I want to be able to dual boot with backtrack4. I used to have bt3 but it was on a usb loading up with winxp. Anyway, I've downloaded the iso image and after hours of forum reading I figured out how to mount the iso image. Doing so allows me just to look at the files. Is there an install file somewhere I'm missing?

Also, couldn't ever figure out how to partition my drive to make room for bt4. Tried downloading gparted and failed. Tried using the expert partitioner program that came with this system but it won't allow me to create another partition. Couldn't ever find a reason why. Will bt4 allow me to create a partition upon installation? How do I install?

General :: How To Create A LiveCD

Jan 18, 2010

What is the best/easiest way to create a Linux Live CD? Specifically, I'd like to create a Live CD that is very minimal in size, runs XFCE4, Wireshark, and has hardware drivers that make it compatible with a wide variety of laptops, ethernet drivers, and 802.11 drivers.

It needs to have an up-to-date kernel and it needs to be relatively easy to update as newer kernels become available.By minimal in size, I mean would like to get my features in to less than 300MB. I only need 1 language (English) supported and 1 keyboard layout. I'm personally partial to Ubuntu.

General :: Using LiveCD For Net Connection?

Mar 9, 2011

I've read that you can connect to the internet after booting from a Linux LiveCD. How does this work? For example, if you use dialup, and modem+connection sw are configured, you just connect as usual? I'm conceptually fuzzy on this--since the sw for dialup lives on the hard drive, you can access the hard drive as usual? And if you have doc or text files on a USB flash drive, you can access the flash drive and open+edit the docs using a text editor included on the LiveCD?

I downloaded the gparted iso and burnt it to a CD.

gparted-live-0.5.2-1
This GParted Live was created by:

I put the disk in and reboot. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot. I have done this a number of time and the results are the same.

Can anyone tell me how to boot from the gparted liveCD?

General :: Unable To Boot From LiveCD / USB

Mar 5, 2011

Basically this morning, I decided to format my Win7 as it was getting really slow and I did so with no problems. I also have a Linux Mint OS on dual boot. Since I was springcleaning my windows partition, I decided it was a good idea to do the same to my linux partition.

I downloaded the latest version of Linux Mint (Julia) and burned the LiveCD. Now here is where the problem lies, when I restarted Windows and chose to boot from the LiveCD, it didn't work. No joke. There was just a little underscore blinking for a long time before it went back to GRUB which prompted me to select an OS to boot.

However, when I went into my old Linux Mint OS and restarted the machine, the LiveCD worked... to a certain extent. It would load and look as though it was ready to install Linux Mint 10 but the moment it got to the option screen, the whole screen turned into a checkered and jumbled mess.

At this point I thought it was the LiveCD or the .iso file. I had an Ubuntu LiveUSB for recovery purposes and I tried that. The exact same thing happened. Can't boot the LiveUSB if I restarted from Windows, but works when I reboot from Linux. BUT still the same checkered screen that doesnt respond.

Did a bit of googling and reckoned it might be something wrong with my GRUB. Did some updating and didnt make a difference.

Then I tried the Super Grub Disk and STUPIDLY uninstalled GRUB. (Note that booting to SGD had the exact same problem - can't be done if I rebooted from Windows). Now I can't access my Linux Mint 9 cos the the bootup screen (mbr) only has Windows 7 as an option.

Remember me mentioning that I can't boot from any CD/USB/recovery CD when I reboot from Windows? And now that I can't access Linux, there's no way for me to do any form of recovery!

I've tried using the command prompt utility at startup recovery but to no avail.

General :: Unable To Boot The LiveCD

Apr 7, 2011

I re-installed my Windows OS today and wanted to install Linux Mint as a dual boot. Before the reinstall, I used the LiveCD Gparted to expand my C: from 25 to 30 GB. All went smoothly. After the fresh Windows install, I went ahead and installed all the hardware drivers and other programs I need. Now I don't seem to be able to boot from LiveCD successfully. On booting from CD Rom, it goes up until the screen with the Linux Mint logo and stays there (I tried giving it time, waited an hour and nothing).Thinking something was wrong with the CD, I tried booting a USB drive. Used Linux Live USB creator to use the same .iso file to boot from. It seems to 'freeze' at the same point.

Formatted the drive, and installed UNetbootin and used the same .iso file. This time, booted it in compatibility mode. A few commands flashed by (links to pictures below), no idea what it means. I've taken a picture, maybe you can tell me what it means? This is the only lead I have to figure out what went wrong (Even if I don't want Linux installed, booting with Live CD to recover data is invaluable)

Pictures I took of the messages in compatibility mode:

[URL]

P.S: I don't know if this is important but I thought I'd mention it. I was in Gparted (in the LiveCD) when the screen froze. I had to hard boot the laptop again, and I haven't been able to get the LiveCD to work since.

General :: CentOS Not Booting From LiveCD?

Jun 21, 2011

I downloaded the CentOS-5.6-i386-LiveCD.iso and burn it on a CD, as usual. When booting, it does the automatic boot but then crashes, with "Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 354800 (and more)". I am having the same problem with making a boot-able USB. I am not exactly sure what is wrong, I see two folders on the cd LiveOS and isolinux. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be like this, if the burning process when ok. I'm trying to set up a desktop on a pc (with AMD Sempron processor). This is very strange, I ruled out that it couldn't have been my computer (because my Fedora boot disk booted fine), my cd (because it is new and an entirely different brand), or the .iso (because I tested it in VirtualBox, which it booted perfectly).

Files in LiveOS folder:

General :: App Segfaults Every LiveCD/DVD Kernel Panics?

Jan 23, 2011

My friend's PC recently started acting up. He had me install Sabayon on it and everything was fine until a few days ago. Every app I try to run after the PC boots results in a segmentation fault. I figured maybe something was wrong with the HDD, so I tried to boot from a DSL liveCD to run fsck, but it wouldn't boot; it freezes right away. I then tried the Sabayon LiveDVD and got a kernel panic.Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I am completely clueless; I've never had anything like this happen before.

General :: RHEL5 LiveCD Support For LVM Volumes?

Sep 28, 2010

I have created lvm snapshot, its dd file and .tar.gz files are on lvm volumes. Snapshot is of / directory, is residing in lvm volume. The root directory is also lvm volume. So I was trying to restore from snapshot of / using live cd of rhel5 BOOT.iso. which i found it in /rhel5_dvd/images/. The tutorial I was following said that the live cd should support lvm. So when I am trying to restore after few steps when it asks for media which contains rescue image, I was unable to see the lvm volumes created earlier, instead it shows the partitions added to physical volume earlier i.e., #pvcreate only. So I wanted to know whether the live cd of rhel5 supports lvm or I am making some mistake in restore?

General :: Installing Additional Files From Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD?

May 31, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:

[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvdial wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb
...and
[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvstreams [3 sw packages]

How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?

I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.
