Ubuntu :: Crash Between 10.04 To 11.04 Upgrade - Access To Files From LiveCD?

Aug 17, 2011

Yesterday, while upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04, the computer crashed. For this reason, when I reboot, Ubuntu doesn't recognize any longer the root folder and so on... and halts execution in a blank screen (well before the login screen).I'm currently running LiveCD and I can see the Filesystem with the root folder, the bin folder, home folder and so on....My question is How can I access the files I had in my desktop from LiveCD? I know the user and password so how can I access it?

Ubuntu :: Sharing - Access The Files From Windows 7 - Permission Denied

May 26, 2011

I have my ubuntu comp setup as a media server and works fine with mythtv etc but I also want to access the files from my computers in the other rooms (most have windows 7). I was able to share the file containing the videos easy enough by right clicking the file and checking all of the sharing options the first time. I have been able to access all the files that i originally put in the folder and stream video to my other computers without issue.

However any new files I add to the folders I am now unable to access. The files show up but when I click on them it says I don't have permission. I have tried unsharing the folder and redoing it but I come to the same issue. I am sure I am just forgetting an easy step but I can't think of what that is. Also want to make sure that any new files I add to this folder will work instantly across the network.

How do I get access to the files that are there, I think they are encrypted.

Ubuntu :: Accessing Permission Locked Folders Through Livecd?

Dec 6, 2010

My spare laptop refuses to load into the OS (it's running 10.10) or even give me a log-in screen - it sits there with a blinking cursor in the corner of a black screen. It's a 7 year-old laptop I mainly use as a mediacenter, which means I keep very little on it so I figured I'd just do a complete reinstall and move on.

So I threw in a livecd to grab the one folder I needed before I was going to wipe the drive, but apparently at some point this folder got permission locked, and it won't let me open it or copy it to an external through the livecd. Is there any way I can get at this folder?

General :: Installing Additional Files From Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD?

May 31, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:

[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvdial wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb
...and
[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvstreams [3 sw packages]

How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?

I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.

General :: Downgrade Gcc-version To Compile Mex-files For Matlab - Permission Denied

Feb 22, 2010

I am trying to run matlab 7.7 (R2008b) on my ubuntu 9.10 distribution..the thing is that I am totally new with both matlab and linux and I get the following error message from matlab when I try to run an example mex-function:

>> mex yprime.c
/home/margareta/Desktop/matlab/bin/mex: 1572: gcc: Permission denied

Warning: You are using gcc version "". The earliest gcc version supported with mex is "4.0.0". The latest version tested for use with mex is "4.2.0". To download a different version of gcc, visit [URL] eval: 1: gcc: Permission denied mex: compile of ' "yprime.c"' failed. Error using ==> mex at 213 Unable to complete successfully.

I had gcc-4.4 as default on my pc, so after this error I downloaded an older version (gcc-4.1) and removed with rm the symbolic link in /usr/bin pointing to gcc-4.4 and created a new one pointing to gcc-4.1. Now when I type gcc -v in the terminal it says that gcc is in the packages gcc and pentium-builder, to do an apt-get install. I tried that but than it says that gcc-4.1 is already the newest version. It seems that I have multiple versions of gcc installed but neither the terminal nor matlab can find them.

Ubuntu :: Use LiveCD To Access Filesystem

Sep 22, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS in a dual boot environment with XP. Except that I have two hard drives: One with Ubuntu and XP and one with just XP. The MBR on the XP-only drive has an entry named "Linux" which points to the grub loader for the split drive. I tried to reinstall windows on its partition on the split drive, but the install process hung and I've never figured out how to make it finish. I didn't use that partition for this entire episode. Yesterday I booted into Ubuntu and tried to log in, but immediately after entering username and password I was presented with an error message (full screen, blue background, red "ok" button). I don't remember exactly what the wordage was but it had something to do with a hard drive error.

I thought I was experiencing hard drive failure, but I hit the reset button and successfully booted into the windows-only installation. I didn't think the problem was anything more than a random error. Today I tried to boot into Ubuntu, but immediately after the splash screen I was greeted with BusyBox v1..1..3 with an (initramfs) prompt. I restarted and tried Ubuntu again and immediately I encountered the grub> prompt (no grub bootloader, no splash screen). Confused about why the prompts had changed I decided to boot into Windows, but at the welcome screen an error dialog from lsass.exe informed me of an unrecoverable error in the registry: the semi-famous "registry could not read in, write out, or flush." Next I tried the live CD.

Using the live CD I could access the contents of both of my windows partitions, but not my Ubuntu partition. Navigating to "FileSystem" using the LiveCD only yields the directories created for the LiveCD session. I tried again to boot into windows and it worked, so I'm hoping the message from lsass.exe was just a random hiccup. Right now I'm pretty much only concerned with getting the Ubuntu partition backed up, and then performing a fresh install. Content from the windows installations is fully backed up. The fact that using a LiveCD gives me access to the windows partition on the split drive makes me certain that the drive has not physically died.

Using "fdisk -l" produces no output, and "dmesg" gives some errors at the end of the output:
[310.832172] EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock
[341.900881] VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev sda5.
