Mar 24, 2010I'm using kde 3.5.10 on a Debian Lenny with xorg from backports and nvidia proprietary driver (195.36.15) on my laptop. Nowadays I have received a 2nd monitor, end my purpose is to attach it to my laptop. TwinView or separate X screen work fine but clone or extended view modes for my mind are not so usefull. I think there is the possibility to assign one virtual desktop to one monitor and another adjacent virtual desktop to the second monitor. how to obtain this kind configuration.

Nov 27, 2010I have installed a ssh server on a computer (Ubuntu 10.04). This computer will be reboot many times, so the IP address is going to change. As a result, I couldn't connect with an other computer on this server via ssh. That's why I search a solution: either I assign a static IP on my server computer or I heard that I could use a dns name. I don't know if the latter solution is good so I hope to have some precisions. Also, I tried to have a static IP by editing the file : /etc/network/interfaces but it doesn't work.

May 25, 2011Using Ubuntu Server maverick here - after altering /etc/network/interfaces to use a static ip and checking /etc/resolv.conf (no alteration needed) no network services were working at all. Here are the contents of interfaces:

I was fairly certain that this was verbatim from my previous server which is no longer attached to the network. After hours of fooling around with no success I changed the address to 192.168.1.99 and it worked perfectly. So my question is: why? My old server used 100. Could the router refuse to give a new server the same address or something like that since that address had been taken in the past?

I've configured the router to assign it the address every time but when I rebooted everything the server is cut off from the network completely (rather unfortunate with a headless server...). The only file I've edited on the server when trying to do this is /etc/network/interfaces, everything else network related is default. Feb 21, 2010I have 2 monitors. I'm using the Nvidia driver in Twinview Mode on the right side. I can move the cursor from one monitor to the next and I can drag applications between the two. I have multiple activities. And the second monitor selected one of those other activities as the background. I'm not sure how this was chosen, or if I have a choice. Anyone know? Do activities affect what is displayed in a dual monitor setting? As I toggle through the activities, the two monitors change, but never to the same one.
When I open an application, it's a guessing game which monitor it appears on. Can I control that?
I know if one clicks the top left corner of an application they can send it "To Desktop" ("all", "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc). If I could assign "Desktop 1" to monitor 1, and "Desktop 2" to monitor 2, I could then use the "To Desktop".
At a minimum, how does one control where applications open in a dual monitor setting?

Well, each time I run Windows XP from my VirtualBox, I see the CPU usage at almost 100%. I experience a slow system even if no programs were running on my hosted Windows XP version.
I was wondering if there is a way for me to play with the settings so I can slightly enhance the performance. My PC is relatively fast under my Linux operating system. Jun 5, 2010I want to do two things: Set up a virtual machine on Windows 7 to run Ubuntu Set up a way for the virtual machine to read the windows disk or windows to have read/write access to the virtual machine's disk. My goal is to have a place where both Ubuntu and Windows can read and write. What software is good for this task? Are their free programs that can run virtual machines? Also if my machine is running Windows 7 64-bit, can I install Ubuntu 32-bit? Or am I forced to use Ubuntu 64-bit? Or does it not matter?

Jun 18, 2010I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.

I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

1. Emerald is not running at startup so I have to type emerald --replace every time I login otherwise I get no windows border.

Aug 12, 2010Am attempting to set a static IP address on a server (to be used with Mythtv) and is running mythbuntu 10.04 (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this). I can set a static IP address that is in the range of 192.168.1.x on other machines on the network but when I try with the server it is not able to connect to the network. When using the DHCP rather than manually assigning the address it is assigned an address with the 10.0.0.x range. Why is it doing this I have never have this problem on other ubuntu boxes (and this one prior to a format of the OS).
The router/gateway is 192.168.1.1 I did have a DHCP server on the mythbox before formatting it and I was able to assign a static 192.168 address and retain internet connectivity. But I have re-enabled the DHCP server on my router since formatting the box.
