I have setup apache webserver on RHEL5 working fine for months now. Next task is to add another domain name to the webserver using the same IP address. I have been trying to set up apache name based virtual host for the past several days without success. Each time I try elinks [URL] it went to the main page sales.example1.com. Main page sales.example1.com is on DNS but 2nd domain [URL] is not created on DNS yet. I just doing testing first on /etc/hosts.

- add Alias /phpmyadmin "/usr/share/phpmyadmin" (Failed)
- add Alias /phpmyadmin /usr/share/phpmyadmin (Failed)

Debian Configuration :: VirtualBox: Host-only Networking: Static IP Guest Addresses?

Jun 6, 2011

Debian Testing host, Winduhs XP guest. Winduhs is not allowed to directly access The Internets, and I am not setting up bridging as that makes it possible for the guest to mount layer 2 attacks on the LAN. I need for the guest to tunnel through the host without being able to see anything on the host, so it can then get access to The Internets, while being protected by iptables (Shorewall).

Used to be with VMware I had host-only set and the guest in a different class c (192.168.2.1) from the host (192.168.1.1) I turned on ipforwarding, set Shorewall rules, and it all worked. Now I have everything set with VirtualBox, and it does not work. Guest can ping its interface but not host. Host can ping vboxnet0. Host is supposed to masquerade guest's 192.168.2.1 through to the default out at 192.168.1.1, but it's not. I think a clue is in routing, but I don't know what's wrong.

Ubuntu :: Virtual Box 4.0.8 - Bridged Networking Crashes Host (kernel 2.6.38-10)

Jun 19, 2011

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 host running in VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778, and I need to setup a LDAP authentication network between two VM's: a Maverick-based distro and Ubuntu Server 11.04.

Screenshot of the two running perfectly fine:

[URL]

Using NAT, I can have the two VM's up and running on VBox, but they get the same IP (10.0.2.15).So I googled it and quickly found out that I needed to change the VM's network interfaces to Bridged Networking. So I tried that. Here's two screenshots of the default configurations:

1- Ubuntu Maverick based distro:

[URL]

2- And here is one of the Ubuntu Server:

[URL]

(I'm Portuguese, that's why there are mixed languages in the UI)It's pretty stupid to explain like this, but whenever I try to start one of those two using Bridged Networking, I get a black screen full of errors (I can't take a printscreen of that, so I took a bunch of pictures - yeah, it's lame, I know ). Then, I have to press the power button to shut down my host, and restart the pc.Here they are:

Where I think the problem is:

My host is currently running Linux kernel 2.6.38-10.I have dkms, linux-header-generic and build-essentials installed (and the VB extension package too)And my host is a laptop, connecting to the internet using the router my ISP provided me.How can I solve this? Is this some kind of bug regarding 2.6.38-10 kernel?I don't have other pc's to test my LDAP authentication, so I needed the two VM's to have different IP's.

Server :: Apache2 Virtual Host Defaulting To Default Host

Bit of an odd one, this. I've migrated a website from my old server to a new machine. Both servers run Ubuntu + Apache2. Both only serve a single site, apart from the default site.I've flipped the domain name to the new IP address.The trouble is that after moving the virtual host config over into sites-available, with the necessary link in sites-enabled, Apache attempts to serve from the default web root (/var/www) rather than the actual site content (in /var/www/technology). So for example, an attempt to browse.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Centos OS 64 - Development VM Image With Static Ip Address?

May 23, 2011

I am a developer, not a network admin - sorry if this ia dumb question. I need to test an application on CentOS 55 64 bit. The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1

The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
HWADDR=00:0C:29:83:4B:A4
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

Networking :: Isolating A VMware Virtual Machine From It's Host But Still Alowing Internet Access

Oct 31, 2009

I have a WindowsXP virtual machine which I need to isolate from the host machine completely (have the host act as a bridge but not be visible on the IP layer at all.) It still needs to have Internet access. Obviously it has to be able to contact the router but I would like to be able to block port 80 (or even just block all SYN packets addressed to the router.) I also want to allow port forwarding from the router to the virtual machine. I can use basic iptables but this is way beyond me.

The host OS is probably going to be Debian Lenny but this is not built yet so if someone can recommend a different distro which is as lightweight as possible but will support VMWare, iptables and tcpdump then that would be great. I was thinking of Slackware but I have not used it in ages and from what I can remember their is no real package management.

I have run a trace on my ip address as I am browsing the internet and I can see the sites I am visiting on our web appliance. However, if I try to ping or update no requests are hitting the proxy so I don't think that is the issue.

Networking :: RHEL 5.4 Can't Reach Any External Host Or Even Ping Localhost

May 27, 2010

This is a RHEL 5.4 install. I did a fairly routine install setting up a static IP address of 10.5.96.10, a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0, and a gateway of 10.5.96.1 with the standard DNS setup for this network. These are all standard network setting for this network and otherwise work fine on other systems. The IP, gateway, and subnetmask all appear correctly on all relevant configuration files. This server can not ping any other system on the network and can not ping its default gateway. No other systems can ping this one either. Also this system can not ping "localhost" or its own hostname. The hosts file contains the line:

[code]...

I can ping 127.0.0.1 and 10.5.96.10 and it works fine. Also the firewall is disabled. I know I probably can't get a straight forward fix with the information I have on hand right now, I'm more of a Debian guy, so there might be some Red Hat intricacies I'm not familiar with. I think I had a CentOS install some months back that had this issue and I don't remember how I fixed it, or if I even did. I might have just replaced it with Debian. That's unfortunately not an option this time around since it's not my box.

CentOS 5 Server :: Loading Multiple Virtual Host Conf Files From Httpd.conf?

Jun 1, 2009

I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:

In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line

Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf

However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:

httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied

It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.

Networking :: Easiest Way To Redirect External Traffic To VMWare Web Host On Same Machine?

Jul 14, 2009

Have done a bit of Googling around this but got totally swamped so will try here. Basically we are running a CentOS server which hosts a number of virtual hosts under Apache. Recently I needed to set up a development environment for another site using Ubuntu and have this running and accessible on the LAN from a VMWare image. I'm using bridged networking so the VMWare machine has its own IP on the LAN subnet.

I've set up a DNS to point to the external IP of the physical host but can't figure out how to route traffic requested on this domain to the VMWare host. I've basically tried two approaches (configuring a proxy web server and reverse proxy in an httpd.conf file and mucking around with iptables forwarding rules but without success.

Ideally I'd like somesite.somewhere.com to point to the VMWare IP but I could live with a custom port on the end if thats whats required.

To throw further complication into the mix I need reliable communication between the VMWare machine and external mail relay servers in order to debug any issues with mail bouncebacks, embargos etc.

Any idea what's the easiest way to accomplish this?
