General :: Virtualization - Running Windows Virtual
Mar 26, 2010
I'm installing a new server after this weekend, and it musth have both windows server 2008 r2 and linux (probably ubuntu) running, but I'm wondering which one of them I should run virtual. Windows will be used mostly for rdp and for serving asp.net webpages, linux will host some django-applications and a postgreSQL server etc.

I want to do two things: Set up a virtual machine on Windows 7 to run Ubuntu Set up a way for the virtual machine to read the windows disk or windows to have read/write access to the virtual machine's disk. My goal is to have a place where both Ubuntu and Windows can read and write. What software is good for this task? Are their free programs that can run virtual machines? Also if my machine is running Windows 7 64-bit, can I install Ubuntu 32-bit? Or am I forced to use Ubuntu 64-bit? Or does it not matter?

I currently run a Windows 7 Compaq laptop with an Athlon x2 and 4gig of DDR2. I want to either set up a dual-boot on my laptop, or make Linux the Primary with Windows running in something like a virtual box. I am very much into Android and I want to learn Linux as a result of that. So which Distro should be considered in a situation like this.

I'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

I'd like to run a Tor relay, but am trying to understand the security implications. For some time I've run my torrent client in a VirtualBox virtual machine, which is run as a very non-prived user, bridges directly to The Internets, and writes to one directory on the host. My belief is this is about as secure as it can be, but am open to suggestion. If I run a relay in the VM it wouldn't be associated with my use of Tor as a client, which is fine since there is no technical need for them to be connected and it's desirable for security.I read that chroot jails can be broken, particularly when run as root, so I don't really trust that. Also studied a vserver, but it must share the network setup which doesn't strike me as isolated enough.

I am facing an issue with 100% CPU usage under my system when running VirtualBox. Here are some further details:
My System Information:
CPU 1 name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2310 @ 1.46GHz
CPU 1 level 1 cache size: 32K Data cache. 32K Instruction cache.
CPU 1 level 2 cache size: 1024K Unified cache.
CPU 1 Mips: 2926.20
[Code].....
Well, each time I run Windows XP from my VirtualBox, I see the CPU usage at almost 100%. I experience a slow system even if no programs were running on my hosted Windows XP version.
I was wondering if there is a way for me to play with the settings so I can slightly enhance the performance. My PC is relatively fast under my Linux operating system. I need to know if there are some tips that I may follow when configuring the settings of my VirtualBox so i can achieve better results.

I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.

I had just put the last touch on a snort, mysql, apache, barnyard, base isntall to CentOs 5.3. I noticed that ifconfig displayed an odd virtual nic, and I wanted as little running on this machine as possible. I don't remember specifying that I wanted XEN installed. And on the old lowend machine that is powering this server, Virtualization was the last thing I wanted running on it. I did a google, discovered that the way to remove XEN completely (yum uninstall xen' only removed 'xen' but still, oddly, xen was running after a reboot. Talk about perplexing.

I am currently running WinXP Home w/SP3 only. I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 but has not been installed. I just came across "Virtual Box" in an article posted in Full Circle (issue #38). I kinda like the idea of being able to run different OSs without having to "reboot" to use one or the other. So, as a NEWBIE, I want to know how to go about installing Ubuntu on the same drive (if feasible), which Virtual Box to download and install, and basically .. what I need to do to get all this "stuff" working properly. I would suspect that .. with Win XP already installed that XP should (or mostly likely will be) the "HOST" OS with Ubuntu as the "GUEST".
Or, I guess that .. after installing Ubuntu, that I can designate Ubuntu as HOST. I am assuming that a "dual boot" configuration will be in order. I guess ultimately I would like to use Ubuntu solely and eventually do away with Windows. I use my computer as an "END USER" primarily for browsing, checking email, and such. No business, no office related stuff, no "on-line" gaming. I would like to keep XP ... at least for some time longer; at least until MS finally drops support! I cannot see continuing to BUY a new OS version every 3-5 years and just gets more and more expensive

I have RHEL running in Virtual Box and my native OS is Win 7. From a purely educational standpoint, I want to be able to access RHEL from Win 7 over SSH. I download putty but don;t know how to make it do what I want. Ideally, I would like to use the linux command prompt at a minimum and preferably access the GUI apps also. IS this possible? I am just trying to explore and expand my linux knowledge.

I have windows vista 32bit oem that originally came with DELL system when I bought new. On the PC, MS$ sticker has the product key for windows vista. When I reformatted the disk and re-install windows vista natively on the machine for which it was licensed, it got automatically activated and passed MS$ genuine check. But I got into problems when using windows vista as guest os from fedora 13 host os using virtualbox on exactly same machine for which vista is licensed for. I go that MS$ : x -days to automatic activation, activate now link. Clicking on activate now it says invalid product key even I entered correct product key as it is on the PC.
I tried to create new windwos vista guest os 2 ways:
1) using existing native installation of windows vista by using vmware converter to create vmware disk image of the running windows vista and shutting down and log back into fedora 13 used this disk image as the storage in virtualbox and create windows vista guest. It starts up ok except for that activation issue.
2) using the windows vista dvd and using that as the source for new windows vista installation in virtualbox. All fine except got that activation issue. After killing my 2 days just for this I dont know whats next. Does that not make sense that I have a license for using windows vista on this specific pc, I am entitled to install it on that same pc as virtual or native or even both ways ?
This link: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/vista-vi icture/360 says starting with service pack 1 MS$ now allows virtual installation of windows oem. My native installation was updated to service pack 2 and I also updated the fresh dvd install of windows vista in virtualbox to service pack 1 and then service pack 2 but still no effect in regard to license activation.Did any one solved the problem in some way regarding this issue for windows vista, I would like to know.
