Nov 13, 2010I've tried iok, cellwriter (a cracker) and a few others but what annoys me is that I can't seem to find a way to get them to vanish and only pop up when a text entry box is clicked into (wii web browser stylee). Is it possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Jul 23, 2011My keyboard on my laptop has died but I'm on a working vacation, so in the meantime I really need to use my laptop. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to activate the on screen keyboard (onBoard) without typing, except at the log-in screen. There must be some sequence of mouse clicks to get there, otherwise that was a serious design flaw. The other posts I found here explained how to do it but only with typing involved.)

Apr 1, 2011I installed Debian 6.0.1.a on Friday, but the problem is that installing xfce installed a few packages that have nothing to do with it, like Brasero and metacity. I'm using the xfwm but why were these extra packages installed? All I installed at the time were wicd, gdebi, xorg and xfce4. Everything is working fine...but why the extra bits?

I currently am installing it in in virtualbox first to make sure i like it. I wanted to use xfce instead of gnome but forgot to specify that in the beginning. The install takes a while and i didn't want to start all over if that is possible. I am wondering how i could completely replace gnome with xfce.

Jul 16, 2011After an error occurred i can log in using the recovery console and startx manually.
If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.
I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.
I am using Squeeze, Gnome, default installation.

dpkg-reconfigure gnome-shell i think didnt change nothing...
I haven't /etc/X11/ directory...

Debian :: Choose Keyboard Model In Gnome Shell?
Jul 24, 2011I've recently upgraded my squeeze to sid, then installed gnome shell as default window manager.
1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.
2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.

Jan 4, 2010I use czech QWERTZ keyboard layout, but sometimes it accidentaly switches to (probably) english or US qwerty, so I am unable to write our national characters (which share the keys with numbers on laptop), it writes Y instead of Z etc.
So I am unable to write normal text. I looked in keyboard settings, but it seems to be ok:
layout is "česko with <|> key" - HP Pavilion ZT11xx - this seems to be OK and it worked without problems before this accidental switch.
there is no other layout than the mentioned one and in Layout settings (hope this is correct as I have this in Czech) I unchecked all boxes in Layout switching.
I absolutely have no idea where is the problem. Maybe it is some keybinding but did not find anything which could do this.
I use Debian Lenny with added a11y apps like Orca etc. called Vinux. I tried to ask there, but currently wihout success.

Aug 26, 2011I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
Slackware :: Keyboard Only Works In Kde And Xfce Not Other Wm?
Sep 20, 2010I've been using Xfce for some time now, but I'd like to return to fluxbox or trying fwm.
The problem is that the keyboard only works in Xfce or in Kde, in my system Slackware64 13.1.
What should I do to have it working in all window managers that come along the distribution?

Jul 5, 2010Starting with Slackware 13.1, I am having trouble with keyboard application shortcuts in Xfce. Most of the time, they are not set up at login, for example Alt+F2 for Run prompt, and some custom ones. The fix each time is to kill the xfce4-settings-helper process, which somehow automatically restarts, and the keyboard shortcuts all work after that. But this is annoying.
Has anyone else seen this? I found this bug report which seems to match this problem. But there is no fix, and the bug report goes back to Aug 2009. [url]
I'm pretty sure Slackware 13.0 has the exact same version Xfce-4.6.1 but I never saw this problem under 13.0.

May 22, 2010I'm running XFCE on slackware64-current. I've had this problem for a number of months now. Every so often, XFCE will decide to not recognize key combinations that are mapped to keyboard shortcuts. For example, hitting ALT+F2 will not bring up the xfrun4 dialog box. This happens to all of my keyboard shortcuts (e.g., volume keys).
For now, I've resorted to going into the keyboard shortcut settings and double-clicking on each assignment and then hitting ok. This seems to correct whatever corruption is occurring. What's even more unusual is that all of the settings appear to be intact in the settings box and even in the .xml file.

When I alter the acceleration or sensitivity within the pointer speed section of gnome-mouse-properties, my mouse does not act differently. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How can I change my mouse sensitivity? I have installed Debian Lenny previously and I recall that I was capable of changing the sensitivity.
