I just loaded Fedora 10 onto my laptop and now I'm trying to add a USB wireless adapter with little to no luck (well no luck at ALL.)

I need to install a Patriot Wireless N USB wireless adapter in Crunchbang but when I follow the directions for installing the drivers and am using the command "make" I get an error that says '*** /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/build: No such file or directory. Stop . *** [modules] Error 2"

I currently have a compaq laptop which ive partioned to run windows/linux.I have Debian 7.9 installed, and have been able to surf online no problem with my ethernet, but have ran into big problem attempting to get the wifi to operate.
I checked online first to make sure the adapter i bought was compatible, which it is.So far i have done the following.
sudo aptitude install wireless-tools
sudo apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
Ran lsusb..

I have a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter but I cant get on the internet with it.The laptop is running Damn Small Linux.Heres what is going on and the code I typed:

ndiswrapper says the driver and hardware are present but iwconfig and ifconfig don't say anything.The wireless adapter works fine in windows 2000 and windows xp with the same driver.The green LED on the wireless adapter never flashes like it is supposed to.

I am now trying to understand how to have my wireless network adapter recognized or driver installed. I will be searching around the forums but it suggested I make an initial post as a new user. I am using an older Dell Inspiron 2200. I believe the chipset in my wireless adapter is indeed Broadcomm, so hopefully that will help direct any responses.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has a Dell XPS1530 lappy that has a broadcom bcm4328 wireless adapter. I tried installing kismet on it so I can scan for wireless network in range. I configured it with the source driver as bcm43xx in kismet.conf and complained that the driver didn't support monitor mode. It uses the proprietary 'wl' kernel module to operate but kismet can't use the 'wl' module and it says the same error. I tried unloding the wl and b44 modules and loding the b43 driver but then the adapter stoped working. I searched on the net a bit and found out that kisment doesn't work with the prorpietary drivers for that card.

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

I have just performed the first clean install since new. Installed a new Hard Drive as well. The machine and wifi was fine under Ubuntu 9.04.
It is booting much faster now but the wifi keeps dropping off.
