Ubuntu :: Wireless Drivers Won't Activate

Oct 8, 2010

I recently installed Linux for the first time because my Dell Inspiron 1525 got a virus and would not boot windows anymore. Everything works great. The only thing is that no my internal wireless card won't work and when I try to activate the drivers they just freeze. I have Linux Mint 8 Helena. I go to Menu-->Administration--> Hardware Drivers and attempt to activate the Broadcom STA and the screen just freezes. I have tried this several times with no luck. The wireless card I'm using is Broadcom BCM94312MCG. Here are some screenshots:

The last screenshot is what it freezes on after I hit activate on either driver. It won't even close when I hit cancel. I always have to log off just to get rid of it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Activate Wireless Drivers With No Ethernet Connection?

Sep 26, 2010

I'm been wanting to try Ubuntu for a while now, and when my mom's netbook started to get insanely slow with WinXP, I tried the Netbook Remix on a USB stick. I LOVE it, except I am unable to get the wireless working, which is the only thing stopping me right now from a full install.

I believe my problem is that I need to activate the two drivers "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" and "Broadcom STA wireless driver" which appear as unactivated when I go into the hardware drivers admin tools. Unfortunately this netbook (HP Mini Netbook FW376UA) does not have an Ethernet port, so I can't just temporarily hard wire it to activate these drivers.

So my main questions are: 1) How can I activate those drivers without an internet connection?, and 2) Do you think that activating these drivers is indeed the answer to getting the wireless working?

The details:
Machine: HP Mini Netbook FW376UA
Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook

I have a fresh install of 11.04. I am trying to install the "additional drivers" Broadcom STA wireless on my dell laptop. The drivers worked correctly pre-install on the boot up test run, but now they won't activate or uninstall.

On activation attempt, it says : installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log.

The log reads: Quote:

General :: Drivers - Unable To Activate Wireless After Device Has Been Re-enabled

May 8, 2010

Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.

However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Connection - Need To Activate B43 Drivers

Sep 29, 2010

New to ubuntu. I love the OS. Everything works great except for the network connection. It tells me I need to activate the b43 drivers with fwcutter, but here are the following problems:
1) I can't download and install the drivers b/c I can't connect to the internet wired or wireless.
2) I can't find the website to download the appropriate drivers (I've looked for hours)
3)I'm not too sure how to install them since I don't have a background in coding.
I really like ubuntu, I just need network working.

Debian :: Activate Wireless Interface - Copy All Files For Wireless From Ubuntu

May 17, 2010

I installed Debian 5.04. The Debian installer picked the Ethernet card but not the wireless (Atheros 9285). I followed these instructions to install it (found at ...
...

But there was no wireless interface shown in the network interfaces entry of hardinfo, even though I wrote modprobe ath_pci in terminal window. My questions are: 1. I followed the instructions regarding updating the madwifi sources, installing them etc. Does this guarantee that apt downloaded and installed the right madwifi driver? 2. Will I be better off if I try to install the driver downloaded from the Atheros website? 3. How can I activate the wireless interface (since the driver is running should not the wireless interface somehow show up automatically)? 4. When I am running Ubuntu 9.10 it picks up the wireless. Can I somehow copy all the files for the wireless from Ubuntu and paste them in the Debian filesystem?

Ubuntu :: 9.10 No Longer Boots After Activate The Proprietary Nvidia Drivers

Feb 4, 2010

I had, with much delight, accomplished a dual boot install of Ubuntu 9.1.0 and Windows 7 the other day and everything was working perfectly fine. However, I decided to activate the proprietary Nvidia drivers that were available in the drivers menu and my system subsequently no longer operates. After installing and rebooting Ubuntu will no longer work and becomes stuck on a black screen with two white dashes in the top right had of the screen.

This hang up occurs directly after the first white Ubuntu logo appears during the startup and the only key that will work during this screen are Crtl + Alt + F1, which only bring up a second black screen except with a solid white dash in the top right screen. At that point no key will work. I have tried to fix things in recovery mode and used envyng to remove the nvidia drivers as well as other operations, however the same result still appears when I try and run Ubuntu. I own a Sony Vaio Z690C if it makes any difference.

I can't get my fglrx drivers activated, every time I try I get an error message. I first tried going into System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers and activating it their but I get this error message: SystemError: installArchives() failed. I tried using some jockey command (my apologies as I can't quite remember the command) and I got the same error message. I was searching around on google and I someone said to type Code: aticonfig --initial Into a terminal and now my computer is running really slowly and I can't get it to run like normal. OpenSUSE Hardware :: Radeon Drivers - Cannot Activate Desktop Effects

Aug 8, 2010

I'm new to OpenSuse. Just installed it in my laptop.. Overall a great distro, I'm just getting trouble with some video aspects. I'm currently using the open-source radeon drivers. However, I can't activate desktop effects (ok..) and video playback looks choppy (sucks, I get like 3 fps). I've already tried some solutions, like installing fglrx driver (which makes my X system buggy) and trying to manually enabling DRI in xorg.conf (which didn't work).
My laptop GPU is an ATI Mobility HD5650.
Currently running OpenSuse 11.3 using KDE Desktop and radeon drivers.

Here's some of the result from my glxinfo (using auto-configured xorg, i.e., no xorg.conf):

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Activate Broadcom STA In "Additional Drivers"?

Jun 27, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Lenovo B570 in a dual boot config alongside Windows 7. I've downloaded the correct Broadcom STA drivers (the model is Broadcom BCM4313) with another PC, transferred them with a USB stick, installed them with Synaptic and locked the version as was recommended. I've also used the rfkill command to turn off the software block, so both hardware and software switches are OK.

The problem is when I go to the "Additional Drivers" application, it yells at me for not having internet access, and then shows up completely empty. This confuses me because I've manually installed it, so I would think it would show up regardless, but it doesn't. In a final effort to make it happy, I've brought it to work and connected it through the Ethernet, setting up the proxy LAN settings to let it through the firewall. I can get on the web with Firefox with that method, however when I launch "Additional Drivers", it sits there searching for drivers endlessly, so I'm guessing it's not really connected. I feel like I'm really close here - I just need to enable the Broadcom driver, but I can't because "Additional Drivers" won't show it.

On the Live CD, the Broadcom STA driver worked fine, but now that I've finished installing, I'm having problems. The driver is installed, but Hardware Drivers says it isn't enabled. I try to activate it, put in my password, and the "Enabling Driver" dialog pops up for a split second, disappears, and the driver doesn't get activated. I've tried Google to no real avail.

I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena x64 Edition on Dell Studio 15 laptop which has Dell 1520 Wireless-N Mini Card. But on the installed system, I am unable to activate the Broadcom STA driver. I tried completely removing and then reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source and dkms packages from package manager. When I go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and click on Activate for Broadcom driver, at first there used to be a window which said Downloading and it used to go away after few seconds and nothing used to happen. Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Activate Nvidia Driver Or Get Wireless After Reinstall Of 10.10

Oct 25, 2010

so i got myself in way over my head too soon with Ubuntu but i really like the OS.. I installed 10.10 on my HP laptop according to the directions on . Everything went well and I had no problems until I came across a thread about aircrack-ng.. I decided to test how vulnerable my own connection was after getting scared by looking up some how-to videos on ..... that made it look a little to easy. I was having a ton of problems with the injections tests and couldnt get it to work. I was trying to patch my ath5k driver according to some threads i found on this forum and couldn't get it to work. I finally found a thread somewhere about editing the base.c file to fix the driver. Well, being a noob i have no idea what i did but it wasn't good... yep, shake your head.. i deserve it haha.. anyway....

When i rebooted the comp after finishing the editing process it came up with all kinds of errors and brought me to a grub rescue prompt.. Yikes!! luckily i had Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb so i restarted, tried to delete the partition it was on with gparted and then tried to reinstall it.. The installation worked and now I can boot into windows again from the grub loader with no problems, but Ubuntu is all screwy.. Windows connects to the internet and doesn't seem to be phased in the slightest bit but ubuntu won't let me stay connected to any wireless networks and I also get a failed message when i try to activate the nvidia driver in Ubuntu.. Man, did i learn a lesson about getting ahead of myself and trying to bite off more than I can chew! I really love Ubuntu and the open source ideal so I don't want to let this sour me..

At the partition select prompt when I reinstalled ubuntu I selected "partition my drive manually" or something to that effect. Should I have installed it along side windows via the other option? I have a feeling my problem was compounded when i tried to erase the partition Ubuntu was on but now I'm totally lost and I really don't want to screw up my comp any more! I figured it's time to ask for help instead of shooting in the dark searching random threads for a similar experience which may not be similar at all.

Is there a way to repartition everything from windows without losing my data and reinstalling Ubuntu? I didn't have anything worth saving on Ubuntu but i have about 100gb worth of stuff on my windows partition i don't wanna lose! If I forgot to add any necessary information let me know and i'll be happy to provide any info I can.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Activate Wireless ( Sta Driver Broken )?

Jul 29, 2011

for over at week i have been trying to get my wireless card to work now. If i open Additional drivers, the non proprietary driver seems to be working and active. If i deactivate that and use the STA driver instead, it says active, but currently not in use. When i use the non proprietary driver, i can check mark on 'activate wireless', but nothing happens. When i use the STA driver there are no wireless options. I'm not sure if its important, but when i do "sudo lshw -C network" when the STA driver is active but not in use, the network status changes from 'disabled' to 'unclaimed'. When i came here, i tried to install "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" as the sticky said i should, but the installation fails. It says my card is not supported: "Not supported card here (PCI id 14e4:4727)!"

General :: Atheros AR5007EG Wireless In 13 64bit - How To Activate It

May 30, 2010

I now have a working (almost!) Slackware 13 install on my Samsung R60+ laptop "startx" gets me into KDE no problems, so there's a reasonably familiar GUI to muck around in, but I think that I'll need help getting the wireless networking going. It would be nice to do this in KDE, but I don't think it's going to be possible at the moment. Running netconfig was confusing, as I've never had to do it before. So imagine if you will:

I've just booted Slackware. I'm sitting, logged in as root for the time being, at the command prompt. I'd like to get my wireless card (Atheros AR5007EG) working. Can anyone walk me through the commands I'll need to execute (bear in mind that I don't even know how to edit a config file yet) in order to get this thing on the internet? I've tried reading the docs (slackbook) and googling, but with no luck so far - I don't understand what they're on about! Win7 does this for me.
