General :: Partition Table From Fdisk - Cylinder Mode - Sector Mode - Expert Mode ?
Aug 30, 2010Below is a print out of my partition Table from Fdisk, in Cylinder mode, Sector mode, and then in expert mode?
Why in expert mode does it look like Partitions 2 and 3 share the same sector / hd / Cylinders? Is this OK?

Jun 28, 2009I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?

Mar 25, 2010Is there any Linux tool to create new or modify exiting key/value pairs in text configuration files? For example, to change a setting in xorg.conf, or change something in etc/networking/interfaces? I know it could be done by sed or by perl scripts, but it could be easier to have a program for this purpose. There are many difficulties for this job that the program should consider, and I am facing nearly all of them:
- Some configuration files may have sections. Like in Windows-type INI files (for example: "[something]"), or like Section in xorg.conf. More sections with the same name can occur, like in xorg.conf.
- If the key/value pair originally does not exist, then the program should add it. But not to the end of the file, but tothe end of a predefined section.
- Config files can have remark lines. Remark text can be even at the same line than the key/value pair. After modifying the value, the original remark text should not change at the end of the line. The remark-starting symbol is not always.
- The values in configuration files are not always simple numbers or simple words, but in rare cases, they are composed by more words, for example: item=name address phone
And of course, we can have remark at the end, like this: item=name address phone # remark text
- The key-value separator depends on the file. Some files use "key=value" format, some other use "key value" format, or even "key1 key2 value", like xorg.conf. The as separator can also occur.
- Case sensitivity can also be an issue.
- Sometime to desired task is not to modify a value, but to add or remove a line beginning remark to a certain line.
I think that managing all these possible cases by a perl or sed program is nearly impossible. I begun to write a C program, but maybe there is already one?

Jul 20, 2010I've a new external usb drive that was shipped formatted fat32. I wanted to convert this to ext3; so I performed a mkfs.ext3. I then noticed that fdisk was still reporting the usb drive as fat32 (even after reboot), but mount was reporting ext3: so I fdisk'ed the drive and change the partition's system id to 83 (Linux)

This would save disk space, improve learn the OS better and also gives the freedom to mess around without worrying too much. Can anyone tell me how to install a simple version of Ubuntu 8.04 (that's the distro I choose since it requires lesser RAM than the current version) in virtualbox in text only mode? During the installation there doesn't seem to be a choice in installation modes. If not, should we install the OS normally and change the run levels afterwards to boot in text mode?

And then, when I will have upgraded the disk firmware and added the other hard-drives, I just clone the system back from the clone.
