Server :: Converted From VHS Tapes To AVI Files?
Sep 10, 2010
I have many home movies that I converted from VHS tapes to AVI files. I have it setup where I can watch it on my TV, but my hard drive is getting full because of size and quantity of AVI files. What I would like to do is make a file server to house all of these movies, but I have a couple of P4 2.0GHZ processor and couple 160GB Hard Drives. I would like to know if I can combine multiple computers and create a cluster or private cloud, combine the hard drive and processor power and set it up that way...in a sense a massive powerful file server. I am thinking of expanding this to include my word documents and pictures as well.

Hi am using winff, as converting video is a mystery to me. I have several avi files well about 26 of them. at about 8gb. now i have to convert them into avi again! so my divx dvd machine can read/play them.
I was wondering if I could compress them so they'd fit onto one dvd?
at present I select the 16:9, would the anamorfic be smaller? would it expand properly on my cheep divx dvd machine? I don't mind using the command line.

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.
These dumps were to tape 000289.
*** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].
Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.
Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well
st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0).
scsi1 (0,3,0) : reservation conflict

To force myself to use CLI all the time, I've installed Ubuntu Server edition on my work laptop. However, I still want to be able to view PDF ( rendered as normal PDF, not converted to text ). Basically I want a totally CLI environment, except for PDF viewer.

I have read similar threads, googled, and an idea of what might be required. Hopefully someone here has actual experience and can detail their methodology. My setup is: Two boxes running Slackware 13.1 (not 64) with current patches. One has a Hauppauge pvr 350 card. The other has a Hauppauge hd-1600 card. I have old VHS tapes of pre-school graduations for kids now in their thirties. Since this project has no DRM issues lets say all my video programs use standard Slackware build scripts. I am comfortable modifying and running Slackware build scripts. The collection of video programs includes ffmpeg, HandBrake, VLC, Kaffeine and avidemux2. Currently on the box with the 350 card, I use the S-video in & line in to capture the output of a super VHS player. Because this is a slowish box I was having sync issues and finally wrote a script that
[Code]...
still have to know when to hit the enter key so an old tv is also hooked to the VHS player. So now I have an in-sync file nearing 6G which gets transferred the next morning [read that is the reason it's done on the slower box] to the faster box. As others in the household have a number of apple products the final file extension will probably be .m4v. I am slowing moving away from that as it is easier to stick a laptop running VLC with hdmi out on the tv then it is to go thru apple's home sharing. Another story entirely so lets not argue that topic merely say .m4v is not cast in stone. Depending on the time length of the tape, I would like to create 10 to 15 chapters in the final product. So there you have it. What steps to you use to create a final file with chapters. ps Yes the script should really check that $1 is numeric however I am/was the only user.

I have a physical storage problem and want to put my VHS tapes onto disk. I have an unused Hauppauge WinTV-PVR350 which I understand should do the job but can I do it using Linux? I seek some pointers on what program to use, how to do it and tag the resulting files and help installing my Hauppauge card and any driver if required. I have openSUSE 11.4 (64bit) installed using KDE desktop.

In a previous post I mentioned I planned to buy a Canopus ADVC 55 VHS to DV capture card (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48224).
Now I have done that. And, it works like a charm using my 64-bit Debian Sid and Kdenlive! All my VHS will be saved for the future!A short HowTo: Plug in a SCART to composite adapter into the "TV out" on the VHS player. Plug in the three red/white/yellow composite RCA cables into the adapter and into Canopus ADVC 55.
Plug in a Firewire cable into the Canopus ADVC 55 and your Firewire card on your computer. Start the computer, start Kdenlive and click the connect button. Start the VHS player and click Play.
In Kdenlive and click the Record button, as fast as you can. Wait until tape is finished. Now you have a dv-file which is about 13GB per hour, so make sure you have the space on the hard drive. The dv file should then be stored as such, as the master backup. But, it is now easily converted to any other format.
I have too many home made movies to let them rot away as VHS. My previous attempt with the USB dongle only produces precompressed MPEG2 files which would have sucked. These DV files are uncompressed, take up a huge space, cannot be played as such, but! They are the raw material for any other format. If I'd like, can using Kdenlive readily make it FullHD with a few clicks.
Oh, and it works with vinyl records too!!! Then just use Audacity to edit them later. Don't buy a cheap USB dongle, buy a Canopus ADVC 55 or something similar. The quality is crisp!!!

I switched over from Windows to Linux. I have an external drive that has basically just media files on it. Are there any advantages to converting this to ext3, or should I just leave it as ntfs3?

There are quite a few threads in this forum on how to convert a DJVU file into a PDF (among which this thread the instruction of which I followed.) I converted a DJVU file by printing it to a PS file from the Document Viewer. Then I printed again the PS to file into a PDF from that same application. The second phase took more than 24 hours and resulted in a scanned PDF of less than 500 pages with a size of 315 MB! I have many books of more pages which come down to 1 MB only. What happened in the process to make it so damn slow and so inefficient? Is there a good alternative (not ps2pdf because it provides the same result)?

This is my main problem, I have some .mp4 videos and want to play it on a regular DVD player, but when I converted it, using avidemux, the DVD player doesn't even know the video is on the USB drive.
I encoded this videos on .mp4 to save some space, but now I need it on .avi.

I used Sound Converter to convert a few artists tracks from flac to mp3. I've done this successfully in the Windows environment many times. Now when I go to play the tracks on my Creative Zen, they are not there but when I look at the tracks that I transferred over, in the file window, they are there and they are MP3's but my Zen isn't recognizing them. What's going on? All other artists that aren't converted MP3s are fine.

I have enabled IP Forwarding in my linux machine by using the commandsysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1. But I dont see any difference in routes when I type the route command before and after changing this value.Do you guys have any solution to verify the packet forwarding, but using this single linux machine only? Of course, I verified the net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 value. But I need to verify by transmitting orreceiving packets

Installed Gnome 3 on my OpenSuse 11.4 KDE laptop. Got two monitors, the built in monitor and the external. Under KDE the second monitor works fine, shows up as VGA1 and can be configured to work as an extended monitor, etc. Under the new Gnome 3 install the monitor shows up in the settings dialog but the monitor itself always says 'no signal' regardless of the configuration I use.
Hardware:
Lenovo R500 running OpenSuse 11.4 64-bit (originally with KDE4 desktop)
4 Gigs ram, built-in Intel video card.
Again, configuration under KDE works fine but under Gnome 3 I don't get a signal to my second monitor. Haven't located any other threads covering this kind of behavior but Google searches indicate that early versions of Gnome 3 had multi-monitor problems.

I used the script mentioned here [URL] to convert some wma files to mp3 however rhythmbox will not import these. Is this to do with the way they were conveted? Is there a better way or will converting wma to mp3 always result in this? Was going to try soundconverter but I wasn't sure if this would just do the same thing.

1) Is there an existing substitute for this theme for GNOME and Metacity?
2) If not, is there a way to convert Windowblinds themes into the GTK2.0/Metacity format?
I did some searching for the first question for him, and haven't found any that are very close or that work well. To be honest, I haven't even found one that looks remotely like it. I do have to say, however, that I myself am interested in the second question. Is there a way to convert a Windowblinds .ZIP or .WGA archive to the format of GTK2.0/Metacity? In doing some looking around, I am certain that with a LOT of work, I could port the Windowblinds theme into GNOME, using some image editing and file movement. But is it really necessary?

I recently ran into a problem though. using mav. meerkat I have figured out how to rip dvds using acid rip, medibuntu and some ..... tutorials. Then I tried to put them on my ipod using gtkpod. when this did not work I did some research and realized the video files needed to be converted. At first I tried avidemux, it seemed to work but when i put them on my ipod (video white 80 gb) I tried to play them and the screen just went black and several seconds later was sent back to the menu. Then I tried winnff, but there was no ipod preset only a rockbox ipod preset which I tried with the same result. I then tried openshot using these parameters -ipod libx264 libfaac 1.25 Mbit/s -> 1.5 Mbit/s 128 kbit/sto160 kbit/s Quarter Square NTSC 320x24029.97HzAVCHDQuicktime 7Still same result. I have gotten purchased mp4 videos to work using gtkpod, so I am assuming it is a conversion problem. Also the converted mp4 I made using openshot plays fine on banshee player

I create pdf files, from postscript files created by windows printer drivers:
/usr/local/bin/ps2pdfwr "$PSFILE" "$PDFFILE"
All the pdf files created this way seem to be empty, i.e. no text is rendered by Adobe Reader on the display, if the original document only contains TimesNewRoman font. However, if the document also contains any other font (e.g. Arial), then the whole document will be converted correctly, including TimesNewRoman, and also the other font(s).
In both cases, the following font is in the pdf:
Type: Type 1
Encoding: Custom
Actual Font: TimesNewRomanPSMT
Actual Font Type: True Type
For the time being, I have not found a way to create pdfs that are correct in all respect by ghostscript.

I have a BASH shell script with embedded SQL script. The SQL script fetches the data from oracle server and the data contains more than 8 spaces in the value (eg, 28051630 A) and the data is written to flat file using the below syntax:
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus -s ${CONNECT_STRING} >${out_file} <<!!
.. sql query..
!!
The problem is that whenever the data is written to ${out_file} spaces are getting converted to TAB character
eg, 10 spaces (in Oracle) converted to 1 TAB and 2 spaces 7 spaces (in Oracle) converted to 1 TAB and 1 space Also, from above example you can see the width of TAB char is not constant (8 in first example and 6 in second example) Is there any way that I can stop shell script to convert spaces into TAB character as I want the data as it is from Oracle DB (i.e. only spaces not TABs)

I want to generate HTML files in batch to show some gvim colorschemes in action. I took my current solution from the script at but this will open open a gvim window for each colorscheme I want to process. So far, the only way I have found to avoid the annoying new windows that pop up every second is to start a VNCserver and set the DISPLAY environment variable to that of the VNCserver so that all gvim windows are sent to the display within the VNC session. However, I would like to know if there is a way I can avoid the whole VNC setup and just run a headless gvim instance that does the conversion and exits, with no windows ever being actually displayed.

I've got a 1920x1080 video I've edited and rendered with Cinelerra, and I'm trying to use ffmpeg to transcode it to something smaller. However, when I use a command like this, for instance:
Code:
I inevitably get some weird green band at the bottom of the frame in the converted video. I know that there's some weird pixel stretching going on here, because the NTSC standard for 16:9 is 720x480 with rectangular pixels, and the 1080 version has square pixels, so I'm guessing the green band is an artifact of that process?

I am setting up a Demo website that I am hosting in a Debian Lenny VM, I have installed Apache, mySQL, and PHP5 I know the php server is working because if I place an info php file I can see it in the browser. However, I downloaded phpfusion, as well as phpmyadmin and they are on my desktop, I open a superuser file browser (also added write access to /var/www to everybody and copied the files over as me) and copied over the files. Once in the www folder they are no longer seen as "valid" php files, if I try to access them with iceweasel, IE, Konquerer it asks me if I want to download the file. If I look at the files on my desktop they have different icons. I have attached a screenshot. I can't tell what the difference is, but obviously there is one otherwise the icons wouldn't be different. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here or a way to rectify it?
