i normally use live cd's/dvd's. well i really liked black panther but, my problem is that it's in Hungary and that it did not give me any information on what the user and password is to log in for the first time.

I reboot the server and centos dose its normal checking everything and giving a Green"OK" or Red"Error" and everything seems to be fine. I then get to a black screen with a X mouse cursor, i can move the cursor freely and i can turn the Num Lock key on and off and i can do a Ctrl+Alt+F5 and then reboot with a Ctrl+Alt+Del smoothly, but i just cant get the centos to boot up all the way into the GUI.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?

View 16 Replies View RelatedI installed Xubuntu (Karmic 9.10) several times on an old iMac G3 with powerpc processor. Previously I had installed versions as 6.06 and 6.10 succesfully. But no luck this time. All installs were succesfull if alternate cd's were used.
The problem is that when i boot up i see the bootloader 'yaboot' and after that shortly the mouse logo from Xubuntu. After that the screen turns black and the indication light from the powerbutton turns from green to orange, this means no signal (i guess).
I assume that my screen resolution is wrong and cannot be displayed, the Mac uses 1024x768 if i am right.
My question is : How to access any configuration file to change resolution as I believe is the problem?
Edit: Perhaps there is a way to access command line to change config files.. ? Or using a live CD, but this computer is low on memory and has a hard time using live-CD's.
After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.
I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 64 bit. Sometimes boot fails and I get a black screen. It starts quite normal, but when it tries to start X and KDE, it fails and I only see a black screen. I can't switch to terminal and I can not reboot my computer by pressing "Ctrl + Alt + Del". It doesn't even shutdown by pressing the power-button. The only possibility is to switch off the computer. Then it normally starts.
The problem also occures with a clean installation of OpenSuse. And it cannot be solved by updating kernel, X-Server and KDE.
What files do you need? I'll post them.
The same computer worked fine with OpenSUSE 11.1. I think, the new radeon driver could be the problem, I have to use it because I can not use fglrx anymore as with 11.1
I take a look into my log-files, but I cannot see any error. Sometimes it seems, that /var/log/messages is partly overwritten by restarting the machine.

I can get to the Menu where I get to choose "Try without installing","Install Ubuntu","Test Disk," etc.After hitting ANY of the options, it hangs on a black screen, sometimes with a cursor blinking in the upper left, sometimes not. From all the research I've been able to dig up it seems it's a graphics card issue, but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like my problem as most everything I've been able to find say's theirs continues to install but then causes problems later, or they're trying to load on a dual boot system. I can't seem to get past that first "Install Ubuntu" selection. As soon as I hit enter it goes black.
I'm wondering if I can't load the nvidia drivers from a command line before I attempt to install from the live CD, but I don't know how to do that. I have the .run file downloaded but don't know where to go from there.
I've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.

I just recently installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my old acer Aspire 3000. Previously I was running Debian 5. Something it was great and all but I wanted to try out the "New Hotness" that is Xubuntu. The install went flawless and as far as Linux distro's go this is by far the most impressive. However, I have this problem with my USB storage devices not mounting. I've been all over google, in multiple irc rooms asking questions, and I cant seem to get anywhere. I can mount the devices manually with mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mountpoint. They mount themselves when I plug them in.
Pretty soon, I hope, I'll get my brand new PC and wish to install a Linux disto. on it. openSuse may be it But I read recently that people prefer to do a fresh install of a newer version of openSuse, instead of upgrading it, apparently because of problems that may occur by the upgrade. As I understand, this preference apply to all Linux distributions and not only openSuse. Thus I wonder if there's a Linux distro. that's best in handling upgrades?I don't want to make a fresh new install each and every time that my disro. has a new version. I'm afraid to lose the data in that installation, and backing-up the data would be a headache. Also I plan to install a Windows OS alongside the Linux one via the Dual Boot configuration.

The computer does not respond to any key input except "ctrl+alt+del", which restarts the computer.The machine is a dell inspiron 6000 with inboard 915gm video card, and the bootloader was written to the harddrive mbr. View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.
First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.
Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".
I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?
Ubuntu 9.10, x64. Around 30-40%of the time, after i login, I just get a totally black screen. If i leave it for a few minutes, nothing seems to happen. Whether or not i get login seems fairly random, and I don't notice if there is any common factor- This is always from a clean boot, and i could be on power, or not on power.This is on a HP 6730b, so the video should be a Intel GMA 4500.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed the newest version of ubuntu on my Alienware desktop. It installed fine and I was running everything perfectly. Then I restarted the computer, just to test that out, and now it won't let me get back in.
It takes me to a screen which asks me to select the OS. I select "Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-23-generic-pae", but then it goes to a black screen with the blinking cursor, and nothing happens (even after waiting >10 minutes)
I'm booting off of the internal hard drive, since that is where I installed Ubuntu initially.
I'm having a problem with a server I just got. The first thing I did when I got it was to format the drive and install ubuntu server, but on booting up I got a black screen and my monitor (samsung syncmaster914v) displayed a bouncing notification with the text "not optimum mode recommended mode: 1280 x 1024 60hz". However at one by using a combination of plugging in the monitor after booting, and pressing random keys on the keyboard I was albe to boot into the server, and was able to access the monitor meu, which told me it was running at 640x480, and 60 hertz. having access to the console I stupidly tried changing the resolution and then rebooted, getting the same black screen.

Put in Tvtime and it worked straight away, sound and video, (although does not seem to want to switch between svideo, television, and composite, at least nothing seems to happen.) But it is in black and white!? Tried right-click menus nothing obvious seems to change things.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI keep hearing about how Ubuntu is supposed to be so much faster than Windows 7, but have yet to see any major difference in their boot times. I am dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 on an intel Centrino 2 processor with 4Gb of ram and both OS's take about the same time to boot. After I get to the bootmanager to select OS, if I click on Windows 7 it almost immediately goes to the GUI load screen with the windows logo. On the other hand, if I boot into Ubuntu I get a black screen for ~30 seconds before the Ubuntu logo even appears. Comparing GUI boot times, Ubuntu is clearly the winner, but they take the same time total.
Does anyone know what is making the long black screen or how to reduce the time? I would really like to show people how fast Ubuntu really boots.Immediatly before Ubuntu Gui starts, an message shows up for a second saying something like "Unknown adaptor version (2): You may experience some problems", it flies past so quickly that may not be verbatim.
I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my windows box.I boot with the CD (reset), it starts, I get a black screen with a small logo on the bottom.After a while (with the CD working), the screen goes blank. At this point, the machine reads some more from the CD and then stops... with the screen blank.On the hardrive I have a partition from an older version of linux (Ubuntu 8.something), just the user directories (the partition where I had Linux was killed when I reinstalled Windows).
The machine remains in that state (I've left it on overnight), no HD activity, nothing. Only response I can coax out of it is when I press ctrl+alt+del, and the machine reboots (still, screen is black, no shutdown message).
I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.
View 14 Replies View RelatedHas anyone got Ubuntu 10.04 working on their Dell Inspiron 1100? Most of the time, the screen goes black a short time after boot. Sometimes it goes black right after the splash screen, sometimes I get to log in and then it goes black a little later. Same results when trying to boot into "safe graphics" mode. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine on this machine (although I had to do some special configuration in xorg.conf to get it to work way back when I installed it.) However, it does not appear to be possible to manually configure X in 10.04. I tried disabling the splash screen in grub based on suggestions I found for other Ubuntu versions, but that had no effect on the problem.
Is it possible to replace X with the most recent version that could still be manually configured? Would anyone know how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, if it's impossible to get this old machine to run new versions of Ubuntu, has anyone had success with (relatively) new versions of other distros on it?
I am new to Linux but wanted to try it. I downloaded Ubuntu and burned the ISO to disc, I restarted my PC and the disc runs and seems to be loading, a purple screen appears with a small icon at the bottom, then the screen turns black and that is all, disc stops running and nothing else, am i doing something wrong here?

I have a Dell 700m Laptop and am installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Desktop). I have spent hours searching the internet to learn that the Dell 700m has an Intel 855 graphics card. This graphics card is apparently not compatible with the latest Ubuntu Kernel.
I was able to boot the Live DVD by pressing Enter during boot (when graphic shows), then selecting English, then pressing Esc., then pressing F6 and typing "i915.modeset=1" at the end, AFTER the two -- (it doesn't work before them per this instruction.., 3) Add "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash". So after booting the Live CD, I decided to install Ubuntu to my hard drive, now the PC will not boot no matter what I do. I can still boot with the Live CD, but booting from hard drive is not possible, there seems to be no option for entering the "modeset" from a hard drive install Is there a way I can modify the modeset (on hard drive) from my LiveCD boot? Then eject the CD and boot from HD? Should I give up on Ubuntu, and use a different version of Linux? Knoppix? Fedora?
I'm new to Fedora! My problem is this, I was updating Fedora using yum, the updates were in the process of installing when I got up and tripped over my power cord and of course cut power to my computer killing it and interrupting the installation. I plug my computer back in and boot it back up. I make it to the blue Fedora loading screen with the blank Fedora symbol that fills with white while loading; loads fine but before the user login screen appear Fedora melts down. The screen goes black, the cursor appears with the circle loading timer, and some form of terminal is there were I can enter text but no commands like SU or whatever seems to work.

As soon as I was done installing and I was on a fresh desktop, I installed the Yast updates that were available, rebooted, and now I can't login to any of my User accounts. View 1 Replies View RelatedI ordered a SuSE 11.4 installation DVD from an online Linux Distro distributer that I've used before with no problems. I did this rather than burn my own DVD from the website. I thought that I might perform a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 on this Dell 1420 Laptop that is currently running Ubuntu 11.04.
Note, this is a completely fresh install, not a side-by-side installation with Ubuntu; I followed the installation sequence that completely repartitions the entire disk for SuSE, and accepted all of the suggested options regarding logon, etc.
Everything goes well ... sort of. The first install didn't reboot correctly, i.e., the set-up that is supposed to run after the initial install never happened and I had to manually power-down the machine and restart from the "safe mode." Needless to say, that didn't work as expected. So, I re-install, from scratch, trying different options: for instance, instead of LVM, I decide to have an un-encrypted partition scheme and accept the "obvious" options ... thinking that the LVM options interacted badly with the install. Eventually I get the installation to proceed correctly, or so it appears: it goes though the entire sequence, including the re-boot, building the default image, etc.
I test this image by removing the DVD, power-cycling the machine, and all looks good, so I begin the process of installing software updates, etc. Being paranoid, I re-boot the machine, and all restarts correctly, etc.
Now here's the annoying thing. The next day, I power the machine on, and it locks at the splash screen. By the way, these are the exact symptoms that I experienced with the bogus/incomplete installations. The boot sequence proceeds up to the splash screen and waits forever.
So, in sum: I spent inordinate amounts of time attempting to install this software, carefully following the instructions provided by the installer. In every instance, after leaving the machine off for a day or so and rebooting, I am met with a splash screen that sits forever. Needless to say, I am extremely reluctant to repeat another day of software installation to only have to re-start with no assurances of success. Either I go back to ugly Ubuntu (which has always worked out of the box, by the way), or I look at other options. I was hoping to use SuSE, but I really don't care which distro is on that machine as long as it works and it provides TeX, R, Emacs, Scheme, and a few other software packages that I'm sure are of no interest to your customer base.
