General :: Screen Goes Black During Ubuntu 10.10 Install
Feb 21, 2011
I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my windows box.I boot with the CD (reset), it starts, I get a black screen with a small logo on the bottom. After a while (with the CD working), the screen goes blank. At this point, the machine reads some more from the CD and then stops... with the screen blank. On the hardrive I have a partition from an older version of linux (Ubuntu 8.something), just the user directories (the partition where I had Linux was killed when I reinstalled Windows).
The machine remains in that state (I've left it on overnight), no HD activity, nothing. Only response I can coax out of it is when I press ctrl+alt+del, and the machine reboots (still, screen is black, no shutdown message).

I decided to give Linux a try having used Windows all my life. The experience so far has been disappointing. I have a Dell 700m Laptop and am installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Desktop). I have spent hours searching the internet to learn that the Dell 700m has an Intel 855 graphics card. This graphics card is apparently not compatible with the latest Ubuntu Kernel.
I was able to boot the Live DVD by pressing Enter during boot (when graphic shows), then selecting English, then pressing Esc., then pressing F6 and typing "i915.modeset=1" at the end, AFTER the two -- (it doesn't work before them per this instruction.., 3) Add "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash". [URL]
So after booting the Live CD, I decided to install Ubuntu to my hard drive, now the PC will not boot no matter what I do. I can still boot with the Live CD, but booting from hard drive is not possible, there seems to be no option for entering the "modeset" from a hard drive install Is there a way I can modify the modeset (on hard drive) from my LiveCD boot? Then eject the CD and boot from HD? Should I give up on Ubuntu, and use a different version of Linux? Knoppix? Fedora?

I'm new to Fedora! My problem is this, I was updating Fedora using yum, the updates were in the process of installing when I got up and tripped over my power cord and of course cut power to my computer killing it and interrupting the installation. I plug my computer back in and boot it back up. I make it to the blue Fedora loading screen with the blank Fedora symbol that fills with white while loading; loads fine but before the user login screen appear Fedora melts down. The screen goes black, the cursor appears with the circle loading timer, and some form of terminal is there were I can enter text but no commands like SU or whatever seems to work.

I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.

I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora. This is my main computer.

i am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.

I've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell XPS 630 but every time i select INSTALL or TRY UBUNTU when booting from the cd, all i get is a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I have tried various options in the F6 menu but nothing has worked. I know the CD is working because I was able to install it inside Windows and dual boot, but I wish to do a fresh install.

I'm so desperate about my problems with installing ubuntu. I got a Fujitsu Siemens Computer AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.01 GHz and 1,50 gb RAM. I got Windows XP home edition on my computer, but i wanna completely switch to ubuntu.
At first I tried to install it with wubi, but it won't work always the same problem.
Then I tried it with the Live CD and tried demo and not install, but it fails. First there is a purple screen with a keyboard and a little guy in a circle, then there's a _ in a black screen blinking, and after that my monitor goes into standby mode. The CD is still loaded from the harddrive, but nothing happens. It feels like the Screen froze down and I can't see anything, what's going on.
I tried it with just installing, alternate install, but it's everytime the same problem.

I boot from my USB, and when I try to install my screen starts showing a bunch of white words while scrolling, then my screen goes black and my laptop stops running even though it is still on. I have also tried just running it, but the same thing basically happens.

I've a new HDD, well new everything. Have created startup disk and memory stick. With the memory stick I had 11.04 up and running as, what is it not install, but just looking. Then ran Gparted setting up ./ ./boot, ./data and /swap. went to install Ubuntu and the screen went Black with the white cursor in the upper left corner. There is no way for me to escape from the cursor. No terminal and can't run Gparted. Have checked and move the hardware connections on the mother board.
Noticed that some felt that fsck could be part of the problem along with suggestions, but as I said I've no terminal. All I can think to do is to wipe the hard drive and start once, but my question is how to do itI briefly is, on the BIOS screen "Searching NVRAM", then the black screen, I appreciate your time and I open to suggestions as to how to correct the problem. I just installed 11.4 with KDE on a COMPAQ EVO D510 SFF. The install seemed to go smoothly but after the boot completes I have only a white cursor on a black screen. The cursor moves with the mouse. At the boot menu, I can select alternatively "failsafe" and that takes me (after login) to the Linux command line and I don't know how to work that very well

I burned a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 and decided to use it to build up my little server. All was well initially. The CD booted, the language selection came up (I selected English), then there was the option to Try, Install, boot from first hard-drive, etc. I chose install and figured I'd nuke the original drive since everything that I need is off there. The little Ubuntu logo came up (it was shining/pulsating) for about 5 minutes. This went on for some time (the DVD-ROM spinning the entire time furiously) and then..The screen went black and there was a message saying that there was no input to the monitor (as some monitors are prone to do if you unplug/loosen the cable.) I rebooted, burned new CDs, etc. To no avail!
I have an HP (quite reliable in the past.)

I have a Lenovo SL510 thinkpad (CPU 1.80GHz / 2GB / 250GB SATA / Intel GMA X4500 / 15.6" HD LED says the website), totally fresh, just got it today. My goal would be to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this machine. When I try the live CD, screen just goes black, after a while it plays what I assume to be the welcome music. If I try the conventional install screen is just black. The safe graphic mode yielded two grey _, one in the 1/5 and one in the 4/5 of the screen.

I want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic. However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive. The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.
I'm trying to install on an older IBM Thinkpad R50e, with 500 mb RAM so I figured that it was simply just too old to run the new ubuntu. The strange thing however is that the cd is actually running fine from within my Virtual Machine. This I don't get

I am installing 10.04 on a HP pavilion. I have downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso (live CD). When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.

I recently decided to give Ubuntu another try after a break for a while, and have hit a bit of a road block The live CD booted fine, ran, installed, all flawlessly, so it's now a dual boot with Windows 7. Only issue now is when trying to load the HDD installed Ubuntu, it just hangs on a black screen, no HDD activity light or anything. First up my specs code...
Next, what happens in detail:
Machine posts, loads boot loader with OS options. Whether choose Ubuntu or recovery Ubuntu, it always hangs on black screen straight after that.
Next, what I have tried to fix it so far:
Tried pressing 'e' and replacing the quiet splash with nomodeset, same result with both normal flavour and recovery.
Tried copying the xorg.conf from the live CD filesystem to X11 folder on main system drive. Also tried editing it to try and use generic vesa driver.

I am trying to do a dual boot of XP and ubuntu. I have 3 hard drives and I plan to put ubuntu on one of them. I have created a DVD from the ISO for 10.10 using programs and methods recommended by ubuntu, and it burned correctly onto the DVD. When I boot with the dvd in the tray the computer says something about linux iso then the screen goes black with a Human=Keyboard symbol at the bottom for a few seconds. Then my screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. I have let it sit for a while and the PC shows no signs of drives working. Also if I remove it the PC automatically boots to windows.

I've got a problem with my openSuse 11.3 for a few days. This is my first Linux so i'm kind of rookie.OK, let's start.I installed it something like 1 month ago and everything looks good until now. When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn't change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and have never had any problems installing it up until now.
I can boot from live CD for 9.10, but if at any point I attempt to install it to my hardrive, it either locks up or the screen goes black. Sometimes I'm able to start the installer, but the screen will go blank. The most progress I've been able to make on the install was up to 98% before it locked up, every other time I've gotten a blank screen or a lock up around 40-60%. After a hard reboot I get an error that reads "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
This problem doesn't only occur with 9.10, but with every other linux distro I've tried on it. My first attempt was with Ubuntu Studio, but I got similar errors. I've searched literally for hours and have found nary a solution that even comes close to solving my problem. using HP Pavilion a404x desktop
