I am new to Linux but wanted to try it. I downloaded Ubuntu and burned the ISO to disc, I restarted my PC and the disc runs and seems to be loading, a purple screen appears with a small icon at the bottom, then the screen turns black and that is all, disc stops running and nothing else, am i doing something wrong here?

Every ten minutes or so the screen goes blank and I have to hit the keyboard or wiggle the mouse to bring it back to life
This isn't hibernation...for the audio still works
I've looked around the control center...right clicked the desktop and looked at options there

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
I just got done installing Ubuntu on a new harddrive and set it up to dual boot with grub loader. However, when I boot into Ubuntu, the screen goes black. I can however login (blind) by hitting enter and typing password. The login sound goes and it logs in, however, the screen stays black. I am running a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 Video Card.

This year i bought a new Sony Vaio VPCS12M9E preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but i liked the idea of having the opportunity of chosing between windows and ubuntu, so i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO-image to a disc, and restarted my laptop just as i did when i installed it on my old laptop. The problem is that when i boot the disc after restarting the computer, the screen just turns black. What can i do to install Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.
I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.
I just updated to the new drivers. In my Xorg.0.log file, it doesn't show any errors. It just stop at a black screen. This might be a new bug with the binary drivers.

Im getting warning messages saying that I only have about 75 MB left on linux. Windows has lots of space available (especially the "d" partition which I use for storing stuff in like music and video) but I do not know how to "claim" that partition for for Suse.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat happens is, the program crashes for whatever reason (I don't know the exact cause, but the program terminates), and then immediately everything on my screen goes black. However, I still have a cursor, and all other programs that were running continue to run (I can access my other game servers from other computers). The cursor changes icons as I move it around the black screen, as though it is interacting with the programs that are still running. ctrl+alt+f2 still works, so at least I can restart the computer safely.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got sick of unity yesterday and tried to install Gnome3. While doing this, i ran apt-get update. I believe that this updated my xorg to 1.1+ (or whatever) making it incompatible with the proprietary ATI drivers I'm running. So I tried a whole bunch of stuff, from reinstalling the drivers from the ttyl1 prompt, to doing startx from the command line and using synaptic to remove the proprietary drivers and install radeon, etc, etc.I think the issue right now is that there are bits of the proprietary driver left that are messing with the open source driver. Whenever I do startx, i get artifacting all over the screen, which never seems to go away.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my windows box.I boot with the CD (reset), it starts, I get a black screen with a small logo on the bottom.After a while (with the CD working), the screen goes blank. At this point, the machine reads some more from the CD and then stops... with the screen blank.On the hardrive I have a partition from an older version of linux (Ubuntu 8.something), just the user directories (the partition where I had Linux was killed when I reinstalled Windows).
The machine remains in that state (I've left it on overnight), no HD activity, nothing. Only response I can coax out of it is when I press ctrl+alt+del, and the machine reboots (still, screen is black, no shutdown message).
I have a emachines et1331g-03w I am trying to install Ubuntu on. I have tried both 8.04 32-bit and 9.10 32-bit desktop versions. They both just go to a black screen and hang when you try to run from the cd or install. I have not tried the 64-bit version yet.

I only get a black screen but the pc is still running someone said it only put grub to sleep or something. I also tried this commands sudo shutdown -h now or init 0, poweroff... but there all "unrecognized commands" in grub... Is there a possibilty to shutdown from grub.
At random times, natty crashes for no obvious reason. The desktop will freeze for about 3 seconds, and then everything goes black. But it seems that everything is still running, because I was able to hit ctrl-Alt-f1 and it worked. This has happened ever since I upgraded to natty yesterday, but is becoming more frequent
View 9 Replies View RelatedI decided to give Linux a try having used Windows all my life. The experience so far has been disappointing. I have a Dell 700m Laptop and am installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Desktop). I have spent hours searching the internet to learn that the Dell 700m has an Intel 855 graphics card. This graphics card is apparently not compatible with the latest Ubuntu Kernel.
I was able to boot the Live DVD by pressing Enter during boot (when graphic shows), then selecting English, then pressing Esc., then pressing F6 and typing "i915.modeset=1" at the end, AFTER the two -- (it doesn't work before them per this instruction.., 3) Add "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash". So after booting the Live CD, I decided to install Ubuntu to my hard drive, now the PC will not boot no matter what I do. I can still boot with the Live CD, but booting from hard drive is not possible, there seems to be no option for entering the "modeset" from a hard drive install Is there a way I can modify the modeset (on hard drive) from my LiveCD boot? Then eject the CD and boot from HD? Should I give up on Ubuntu, and use a different version of Linux? Knoppix? Fedora?
I'm new to Fedora! My problem is this, I was updating Fedora using yum, the updates were in the process of installing when I got up and tripped over my power cord and of course cut power to my computer killing it and interrupting the installation. I plug my computer back in and boot it back up. I make it to the blue Fedora loading screen with the blank Fedora symbol that fills with white while loading; loads fine but before the user login screen appear Fedora melts down. The screen goes black, the cursor appears with the circle loading timer, and some form of terminal is there were I can enter text but no commands like SU or whatever seems to work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm noodling around with Ubuntu 10.4.1 (usually use fedora) and want to install nVidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run package) for an 8400 GS video card.
So in terminal, I sudo to root, and run "service gdm stop" which drops me to a blank black screen with a blinking cursor that I cannot do anything with and cannot get out of. The only thing I can do is use cntrl-alt-delete to reboot the computer.
The computer appears to be unresponsive to any other keyboard commands. It's not as if there are any "hidden" responses to what I type, since "service gdm restart" does not do anything.
I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThe screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.
I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
I'm trying to install files and everytime I manage to install from the first disc I succeed. When I get the the second disc I just keep clicking the "OK" button instead of "Cancel" and it keeps neglecting it.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.
