I am trying to install fedora 12 on my computer. I have burned the live cd ISO and it works just fine until right before it shows the login screen. I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 on my laptop (Dell Studio model). I have installed fedora 12 onto my machine in the unallocated space, the installation went smoothly. If I login to the fedora directly then every thing works fine. but if I login to Window 7 and again try to re-login into fedora 12 after shutting down the winows 7 then the booting screen will become black (almost invisible) even though I can be able to login and can go to the desktop (which is also very least visible) if i click on suspend and then click on the power button then the screen will become properly visible.

FYI -The CD works fine as I have tested it on other machines.The version I am trying is xubuntu x86 (although I have tried ubuntu 10.04 x86 with similar results).I can Alt+Ctrl+F1 fine and get to the cmd prompt

The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot

View 8 Replies View RelatedThis problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a new laptop and am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have installed it on my two other computers without any problems, but there seems to be a hitch with my new one. So I boot up using the live CD and then am presented with the option to test Ubuntu or install it. If I choose either of these the screen just goes blank. If I go with the first option of testing Ubuntu before installing, I can hear the intro drumbeats but the screen is still blank.
I have searched in some forums and tried some people's advice, like pressing Ctrl+Alt+- or trl+Alt+Backspace to change the resolution and restart X windows, respectivley. But it doesn't seem to work.
I'll list my laptops specs just in case my problem has anything to do with them:

ive downloaded the Ubuntu CD from the official website and burned it twice, once one a dvd and the other on a normal 700MB CD-RW.in both, the screen went blank after the loading part before the main menu (installation, try it blah blah..)what should i do?btw i use a windows XP and here is my hardware details...sapphire hd 5770 1gb, 4 gb of ram,Intel Core i5- P55 .5 ghz, i think that its enough for the minimum of the ubuntu isnt it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I mount Debian 8 live into VMWare Player 7.1.2 64bit, it works awesome with and without graphics acceleration enabled i.e I can get into the desktop and all that.
But, when I installed it, the reboot is just a blank screen. I am not sure how I can proceed from now.

I have been trying to install openSUSE on a dell Latitude XT all day, and every time I tried to live boot, I got a blank screen. I finally decided to do a text install and I got it installed, but now I get the same result from booting off of the splash screen.
I can boot into text mode fine (still) but for whatever reason, it bombs as soon as I tell it to load the GUI. I have a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, and an ATI mobility chip (2000 series, maybe?) I had the same problem with Ubuntu, and since I like openSUSE just as well, I figured I'd try it because I at least could do a text install from my liveCD.
I've been trying for some time to install Ubuntu 10.10 or variant on my Toshiba C660 with ATI graphics card.I seem to keep hitting a brick wall when attempting to run a live disc and end up at a blank screen. I get this result despite tryingots of different installation discs. Ubuntu 10.04 seems to run with no problems.I believe the problem is to do with the graphics card from googling and have tried various changes to the live cd/dvd boot options (set nomodeset & radeon.modeset=0) but with no success

I am trying to put ubuntu on it, but i am having some problems with the 64 bit live USB.
When i run the USB i get i get a GRUB-looking screen, with options to:

To check the live USB, i tried it on my old laptop (32bit, Celeron M). When i did so i got a purple screen with an image of what looks like a keyboard and a man at the bottom, and then a message telling me to try a kernel which matches with my machine's architecture.
I then tried a live USB with 32 bit ubuntu and the live USB works fine - i am sending this email from this live instance running on my new Thinkpad. The same can be said for a 32 bit Mint live usb which also worked on the Thinkpad.
So i am not sure what is going on. If anyone could tell me why the 64bit live USB is not working, it would be great as i'd like to get it up and running. The only thing i could think of was that i have downloaded the amd64.iso, and this is an intel machine. Having said that i see that all the sites on the web suggest that this shouldn't make a difference (if it does, where might i get an 64 bit version for intel). In addition i am not sure why, if this was the problem, my old celeron laptop brings up the error message while the new machine just hangs.
I've used Mint a couple times to try to recover my old computers, but I only worked with it as long as I needed to. Now, I'm going to give Ubuntu a try so I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and burned it to a DVD. When I try to boot it up with the DVD in, it does the startup screen that I'm used to before it loads the actual OS, and then it just gives me a blank screen. The only way to exit is to shut down the computer

It seemed to work on the liveCD, so I went for the install, which also seemed to go ok, but when I start up, I get to log in, then it stops. Plays the start-up sound, displays a blank desktop background, but nothing else...
Screen is blanking out after x minutes. Don't know how to set it to not do that.

I have tried, yes, a lot of things to try to set it so that it doesn't blank out, to no avail. I have spent a lot of time on the Fedora forum seeking resolution, with a variety of suggestions, all to no avail. I went into System Settings > Power Control, and fooled with things around there and they didn't work. I tried xset and dpms and shutting them off. Still no cigar.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing Karma and kubuntu -single boot. When I restarted my machine, the login appeared as usual and I entered my usual password but it was not accepted . I tried several times including making sure that caps lock / num lock etc were not invoked.
I then rebooted into recovery mode and let it run its course. When I rebooted and input my login password, I can get a bit further. The login is accepted but the GUI opens with a blank wallpaper and the terminal prompt window open at the keevill@keevill-desktop.
The ls command shows the name of the files which are on the desktop but they are not visible on the GUI nor are any other icons for applications. It seems like the kubuntu GUI is broken or something. I tried uninstall and then re-install but just the same. If I am forced to re-install Ubuntu I guess this means I lose all my settings and applications will have to be all installed again ?? How can I avoid this?
Right after logging in, as the graphics starts up the screen goes blank then goes to tty2 with a login prompt and no graphics at all. I have Kubuntu 10.04.1 I used the standard Kubuntu install disc. The Computer is a Compaq dm 220mt desktop 2.80 Ghz, 1.2 GB Ram, 40 GB Hard drive. I originally had Ubuntu 8.04 on it and it ran perfect. View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got rid of my Dell P990 CRT and replaced it with a Samsung B2330H LCD. I got the resolution changed to 1920x1080 at 60hz through System/Preferences/Monitors and the new display looks great! There is one problem, though: the computer boots into a resolution that is not supported by the new monitor. As a result, the login screen is blank. The monitor puts a little floating message on the screen that says, "Optimum Resolution is 1920x1080..." When I start up, I hear the "bongo sound" and I hit ENTER, then enter my password, then ENTER again, and the computer desktop appears in 1920x1080 and all is well. But how do I get the login screen to appear in 1920x1080?

I have installed the Startup Manager, but it does not allow 1920x1080 to be selected. I have also tried using Startup Manager to select other resolutions, but the login screen is still blank.
Isn't there some trick to force the login screen to appear in a specific resolution using xrandr? What file does this command go into? Maybe my old configuration files from my Dell monitor are interfering?
When she wants to log into xfce, there is only a blank screen. The cursor shows, but there is no way to go any further. No panel, buttons or background.
However, she is able to log in using XDMPC from a local computer without a problem.

I noticed that this appears to be an old bug come back to life again, but the fix to it was never revealed.
I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.
