Ubuntu :: System Freezes When Starting X
Jun 6, 2010
I've trouble with booting up xubuntu koala:
When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).
Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.

I'm having trouble starting Fedora 14 on my computer. The startup procedure freezes while starting system logger. Before this started happening, I had formatted one of my logical disk partitions which is supposed to be mounted under the /var directory. I think may be the cause of this problem. However, I don't know how to fix it, as I can't get into the Linux command line to do a umount. I don't have a CD with which to repair the system, so is there any way to fix this problem without one?

I have fresh installation of Ubuntu server upgraded with apt-get dist-upgrade and with XFCE4 installed on my notebook. The problem is whenever I type startxfc, startx or X, the NTB freezes, CRT display connected to docking station/port replicator turns off, LCD in NTB gets black. The system does not respong to any signal, even the alt+sysrq ones. If I even install Xubuntu-desktop, as the X gets loaded every start, system everytime hangs after few seconds and I cannot do anything. Now I reinstalled and tried autoconfiguration with Xorg -configure. If I start the X with this configuration file, the result is still the same. Log at /var/log/X11/ seems to be blank.
Any ideas? Should i try to get drivers for my video card? I thought this is not necessary, the X server should start without anything, even only with basic resolution settings. As I looked, the video card chipset (Intel 82852/82855) is detected in my /root/xorg.conf.new file.

I did a fresh install of F11 and everything seemed OK until I started OpenOffice, the OpenOffice loading box shows up then Fedora freezes and I am forced to do a hard restart. I repeated this and it seems to be happening at random with the same default settings of a fresh install.
Has anyone else experienced the this?
I'm using OpenOffice 3.1.0, default settings.

I've apparently messed up something I guess with the rc.M file. When I boot the system it goes to
Code: Starting HAL Daemon: /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes

I am having a problem with Installing Ubuntu 9.10 on My desktop. I have burnt the disc at the slowest speeds possible, and tested it on my alternate PC's, and it works. Not only, I have extensively tested the disc to verify it's integrity. So it ISNT the disc. It is a component of my Main Desktop that is causing the issue, I am of the thought it is my IDE hard drive.
Firstly, My Specs;
CPU: Intel Q9550 Quad Core (Running at an Overclocked 3.4ghz)
Motherboard: ASUS P5QL PRO P45 Chipset , 1600 FSB , etc
RAM: 3gb of DDR2 Team Elite RAM (running at 667 in Win 7)
Hard Drives: 500gb Western Digital ECO Sata Drive (Win 7 System Drive) and an IDE 250gb Western Digital drive reserved for Linux (I have coded a boot manager to switch between the two)a DVD-ROM drive is on the other channel of the Single IDE port on the Board
Video Card: ASUS/Nvidia GTS250 1GB
I think that covers all the vital hardware.
My problem is that when i boot into the live CD, and attempt an install, the installer freezes at the point of setting up the partitioner/scanning drives, at 47%. SO, the partitioner does not get a chance to start.
I have a gaming system, and it has all the latest gear, i7, 16gb ram, etc and it installs on that (i plugged in a resh drive to test)
This system I am trying to use ubuntu on is my MAIN system, I use it for study (PhD Science...science geeks rule!) and I am attracted by ubuntu's features, especially for scientists.

So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).

I just recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu + KDE and I can't for the life of me find a suitable 'msconfig' replacement. My issue in particular is with the 'krunner' process which I want to replace with 'synapse', but I just can't seem to find where to disable 'krunner' from starting up with the system. The 'Autostart' module in 'System settings' shows nothing. Also 'Pidgin' and 'Cairo-dock' start with the system and I can't find where this information is located. I'd like two things: a way to easily manage applications and services running when the system starts up, and a way to prevent the 'krunner' process from starting up again.

Ever since I made the switch to Ubuntu I have had a problem getting back to the X Windows environment from Virtual Terminals. Control+Alt+F1~6 work fine but when I try Control+Alt+F7 my screen freezes.
I have been trying to find a solution to this problem but it doesn't seem to be affecting many other users. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running 64-bit Lucid Lynx.

I'm now on 11.04 (64 bit on a desktop), but had the problem on 10 as well. I get the occasional complete system freeze. There is nothing in the logs indicating a problem and it is not the graphics card, as I cannot ssh in from another machine. It sometimes happens after three days of running and sometimes after 20 hours.

After a hardware freeze, my system boots directly into the Ubuntu screen with 5 dots and hangs. Booting into recovery mode loads the tools menu then freezes before I select anything. The system still boots and runs windows 7 from the same hard disk just fine. I've booted a live cd and run file system check on my ext4 partition and it says it's clean. I can mount the volumes and read the data, just can't get the os to boot.Any suggestions before I backup and reformat?

First post here so I'll do my best to provide the information needed.
System:
Dell Poweredge R310
Xeon 3460 2.8Ghz
4x2GB ram
4x 160GB Sata 7.2k (RAID 10)
Ubuntu Server 64bit
If I type as root, "reboot" or "shutdown -r now", nothing happenings - except the apache2 process stops + the usual "System is going down for reboot now". If I type "shutdown -h now" the system goes down.
Upon booting the server back up, MySQL starts correctly, but Apache2 does not - I have to run "service apache2 start", and it starts up fine.
I feel the 2 issues are related. I've reinstalled apache2 completely (configs and all) and this didn't help - I used yum to install/reinstall it.

The question - before searching and reading - was "how is it done? (see subject)"The question now is - "am I interpreting it correctly?"It seems that basically 3 things need to be done:place a copy of the startup script in /etc/init.d;in rc?.d, define symbolic links to the startup script run chkconfig or insserv to activate the script.

I have a HP mini 5101 wit OpenSuse 11.2. Unfortunately, I wanted to have a newer version 11.3, but I upgraded in a wrong way and the system not started any more, failed in start-up level 5 and ran the Kernel. I tried to find the solution, searched on google, but I think made it worse (personal feeling): made some changes in xconfig. Of course, the problem remained. Then I decided to make a system recovery. Everything was OK, until the last step, when the system prepared the first login. I saw this message for a few seconds:
Code:
*** Starting Yast2 ***
basename: missing operand
Try 'basename --help' for more information
SPP: could not open file: at /usr/share/sax/modules/SPPParse.pm line 61
When I switch on my netbook, during the loading everything seems ok, after loading I see the background but no login window, nothing. I don't know what's the problem.
I started the system recovery again and again. In few times I saw this on screen for a second, then return the background:

1. buying a system with Linux on it
2. Using either an iMac or another machine that I can install Linux on it
3. low cost ways of getting Linux systems

I've got an odd problem and was wondering if anyone had any insight. I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Gateway E-100M and everything works great except for firefox. My machine will hard freeze about once a day when using firefox. The whole OS -- no mouse movement, no keyboard response, etc.I've switched to Chrome for weeks and I get no issues at all. I switched back to firefox and it hard froze within the first hour or so. I know it's unusual that an individual program would freeze the whole OS rather than just crash, but it seems to be a fairly consistent pattern.

I recently re-installed ubuntu to fix my freezing problem, but with no success. disc has no errors. I cleaned the disc and the cd drive, the cd burner has a problem installing while the dvd drive does fine. The computer is a HP Visualize X-class workstation with dual 1000mhz pentium 3s, 2 gigs ecc ram and a ATI AllinWonder 9700 pro @ 2x agp(wish was higher), on-board sound. So my problems are:
1) It randomly freezes within 24 hours regardless of who is logged in or if effects are on or what the load is. mouse is frozen too, completely unresponsive even ctrl alt f1.
2) My sound is screwy. its supported by alsa but i have to play with the volume to get sound and lots of times there are audio errors, it sounds like its robo-trippin. I have tried the sound guide.
3) Desktop effects only work with the user that logs in first. If I try to activate them when I switch users it searches for drivers then says it cant be enabled. not a priority.
Window xp works okay but the graphics drivers are giving me problems so i decide to do a dual boot.
I think I am going to put in a different video card. maybe its not all there, it got hot once when the fan died, put in a replacement and it worked but i see lines moving down the screen when there are blacks.

I suspect the graphics driver but don't know how to upgrade without X running. After booting in generic mode (kernel 2.6.28-1 I can log in the shell but am lost without the GUI.

I had Ubuntu 9.10 .. upgraded to 10.04 LTS... i dunno if its the ati driver or what but when im on wine the games runs fine for a couple of minutes.. 5 to 10 maybe and then the whole system freezes.. cant close cant do anything... the mouse moves though .. and the sound keeps looping, thats if i use OGG on wine insted of ALSA... This looks like it should be on the wine segment but i dont think so... I mentioned wine cuz ATM wine is all i got on this pc as for games.... im downloading urban terror to see if it freezes too...
I remember that right after i finished installing ubuntu 9.10 i upgraded it right away to 10.04 without having the ati drivers installed, after the installation finished... the boot up logo from ubuntu with purple background was at its normal size as usual... But once i installed the drivers.. the ubuntu boot up logo or whatever its called went all BIG like if it was using another resolution, though once it finishes loading, the resolution goes back to normal when in login screen and desktop.
HOw do i remove the drivers completely? do i have to restart after removing them so i can install new drivers? should i use propietary drivers from amd site or the one found by system--- hardware drivers??? why cant i find envy at synaptics?

Im running desktop dual boot system with two hard drives, one with Windows XP and the other with Ubuntu. Ive had no problems with this until now when I upgraded from Hardy to Lucid. Now I have problems with the system freezing on boot up.
Sometimes it will boot just fine, and at other times it will freeze before the login screen appears. When it does freeze, there are flashing lights on the keyboard and the floppy disk light (yes, its an old computer) is lit constantly. The only thing I can do is switch the computer off and hope it will boot up properly the next time.
When I did the upgrade there were a couple of files where the program asked if I wanted to keep the custom file or overwrite it with the maintainers file and I chose to keep the custom one. I THINK one of them might have been GRUB, but Im not sure.
Has anyone had a similar experience and were you able to cure it? I have seen a thread where people have had the system freeze on them, but Im not sure its QUITE the same thing.
Ive also done a clean install with Lucid on my laptop and have had no problems. The laptop is only running Ubuntu.
Im also wondering if reinstalling Grub on my desktop would solve the problem.
a. If so, would it still show both operating systems?
b. How do you do it?

When I click certain links, such as the one below, Firefox consistently crashes.
The bigger problem is that when it does, everything grinds to a halt, and I have to press the machine's power button.
Is there a way to kill processes when the system locks up? This is on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, using GNOME.
