View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. I had problems getting Nepomuk and Strigi to run on 9.10, but finally did. I was using the Soprano backend on that version. Now, it seems that Virtuoso is the new backend, Ok?
I enabled Nepomuk, and Strigi, but the setting dialog in "System Settings / Advanced / Nepomuk" says that Strigi cannot start, could be an installation problem. When I expand the system tray, I see that the strigi icon is listed, and says it's scanning.
Is the warning in the System Settings incorrect, or is Strigi really not working properly? How can I check the status from the command line, and / or restart the daemon so I can read any errors on startup.
So I installed the Unison synch software with sudo apt-get install unison-gtk. When I set up the two directories for synchronization it looks like this: $ unison ssh:\SERVER\pathpath /var/www/path/path/path

I installed slackware 12.1 from files i downloaded and converted to cd (images). There are six "disks" i downloaded from the slackware site and converted to images via a homemade .cmd in windows xp and then burned using imgburn.
I partitioned my hd (canibalized from an acquaintance's emachine and connected it to my desktop (1G ram, 2Ghz processor). Booted from disk 1 and fomatted the 80G HD for 2 partitions of linuxswapable at 2G apeice and 2 partitions of bootable linux. (Because i want to try another distro later). I ran the setup installing most everything and all seemed to go well. After i exited setup and restarted, it identifed the cd/hd as normal and then went into some sort of recovery mode with the emachine logo call pcangel, after which it tells me.
STOP: c0000021a (fatal system error) The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). the system has been shut down. So, is this indeed an xp error message, and if so, why am i getting it after formatting everything?
Earlier this afternoon I updated Ubuntu and now Firefox will not start. It will show in the task bar that it is "Starting" then that disappears and nothing happens
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 5.03 from the netinstall on a usb flash disk. When it gets to the network initialization step, it fails and cannot get an IP from DHCP. Manual configuration does not work either. Out of desperation I installed windows to see if the network device was broken (this is a new motherboard), however it works fine without drivers even. Invoking lspci shows that it is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Etherent Controller (revision ff)
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

View 6 Replies View RelatedUpon boot up, I get lots of new lines added to log files in /var/log concerning apparent problems during boot up. The boot sequence does attempt to show the failure or success during each step as it transitions to the final run level, but is there a good manual or procedure on how to fix each transition, so as to cut down on the amount of pesky warning or error messages?
I am a bit concerned that running a system with warning messages is a bit like running a car low on oil. In the past the goal was to have a perfectly running linux system that came up all the way, and yes, I have seen such. This meant knowing how kernel things work, etc, but still, I would think we would want to pay attention to such things as

and others and work to bring them to a minimum.

I didn't dump the 10K's of log files into this message forum, in case someone asks to see the details, but I am just striving to have the system come up clean, and not with a message like:
Warning: Skipped 98 probes
(whatever that means?? did the kernel just mean that it knew that it is supposed to check 98 things but failed? or that 98 things should have gotten checked but didn't?)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), and my System Monitor (a.k.a. Task Manager) has stopped working. I had been using the graphical version of the app because it was easier and faster for me to deal with. I know that there is a command line solution for this, but I also know it involves having to know the task number of the program I want to kill (I've got a game that I love to play, but only closes cleanly about 10% of the time). I've posted a couple of screen shots to show the errors... The first one is the error message itself (I have to hit 'OK' on this twice to clear it), and the second one is the resulting empty window of the System Monitor

This repeated over and over again. My temperature was never to high 40-55, and I found a suggestion to update my kernel to 2.6.37-020637. After doing so there is no longer the thermal limit exceeded error but the computer is still running poorly. The system is slow and again no programs are showing up in the task bar when open.
I have a ts3.desktop file in my /usr/share/applications folder that I want to run on system boot. I have typed the following commands which don't work

Then in the editor, I typed the following line at the bottom of file. I also made the necessary carriage return after this line.

Then I pressed ctrl+o to save it.
After I put these commands in, I did the following command to troubleshooting this issue, see below.

But after I reboot and nothing happens, the application doesn't start.
I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

If I check the process (wy typing ps -aux | grep skype) i found the process of skype, but I'm unable to get it in foreground (nor with alt-tab key. I was unable to see the skype icon).so every time I have to kill the process ad start it again.

I saw that on every computer in which I installed LXDE on Debian 8 (the problem was not existing on Debian 7.8.0)
So I decided to use mate-desktop-environment but a brand new problem (always ) made his apparition when I try to use tightvncserver on a Mate desktop (no task bar, and memory growing GB after GB up to the memory explosion after 1 or 2 minutes with 16GB RAM -I will post another subject for that once I will know more things about it - since it is, after all, an huge problem causing the computer to crash if "reboot" our "vncserver -kill :1" is not quickly done)
But here talking about LXDE taskbar: others LXDE users, do you have this problem with the icons ?
they change positions every time and locking them only makes it harder for me to arrange them back.

When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).
Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.
Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

I have a problem after upgrade from F13 to F14. I used the DVD i386 Iso on my Netbook MSI Wind U100 but it's don't start. It's load the services and it's stuck in the Fedora logo. I boot into Runlevel 1 to see the logs but there is no error. Then I run init 5 and it's stuck after the service ATD load. I don't want to do a clean install.

Unfortunately, I wanted to have a newer version 11.3, but I upgraded in a wrong way and the system not started any more, failed in start-up level 5 and ran the Kernel. I tried to find the solution, searched on google, but I think made it worse (personal feeling): made some changes in xconfig. Of course, the problem remained. Then I decided to make a system recovery. Everything was OK, until the last step, when the system prepared the first login. I saw this message for a few seconds:

I just recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu + KDE and I can't for the life of me find a suitable 'msconfig' replacement.My issue in particular is with the 'krunner' process which I want to replace with 'synapse', but I just can't seem to find where to disable 'krunner' from starting up with the system.The 'Autostart' module in 'System settings' shows nothing. Also 'Pidgin' and 'Cairo-dock' start with the system and I can't find where this information is located. I'd like two things: a way to easily manage applications and services running when the system starts up, and a way to prevent the 'krunner' process from starting up again.
