View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot windows XP/ubuntu 9.10 set up on one hard drive. Everything was working fine. The 9.10 install had been updated from 9.04. I recently had problems with the XP partition (XP basically collapsed) so I re-installed XP on the same partition it was on before. I then attempted to reinstall Ubuntu ( I decided I wanted a new 'clean' installation of Ubuntu as well). When I got to the partition function it refused to recognize that there is a Windows partition, or a previous ubuntu partition, but states 'No operating system installed' or similar, and offers the entire hard drive for installation. When I look at the partitions using Windows partition software the Windows and the ubuntu partitions are clearly in evidence. I have also tried to reinstall GRUB but it doesn't appear to exist.

My system won't boot unless I have 2 sata drives. It doesn't matter what's on the second one. It even boots if the second "disk" is a powered sata to IDE adapter attached to an unpowered IDE drive.If I don't have the second drive I get this when I try to boot:

I've done the whole use a live disk, chroot into my system and reinstall the kernel to no avail. uname -r gives -- 2.6.32-28-generic
My questions begin with Virtual Box. I have Windows XP installed via Virtual box. Ordinarily, I hate everything about windows, but unfortunately some things related to my job I am still in need of having some access to some form of Windows. I am wanting it to recognize all of my multiple hard drives that are installed on this system, 4 of them to be exact, so that I can utilize files from all of them.

Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.

At the moment I am using AntiX Mepis. I switched to Linux because my Windows used to freeze all of a sudden after a few hourse or even minutes.
Now my Linux was quite stable for a few days but again, it freezes in a few minutes when I use a Window Manager. In the terminal without using any Window Manager it never freezes.
