General :: Restart Mandatory After Installing Updates?

Jul 28, 2010

On Windows, 99% of the time you have to restart the server after installing updates. In my brief experience with Linux, its never told me I had to. Do you ever have to restart after installing any for Linux? I'm using redhat specifically if that matters.

Fedora :: After Installing Updates Unable To Restart Computer

Apr 1, 2010

I recently updated my software (on Fedora 13) and after the updates had finished installing, it said that the computer required a restart. I noticed that I could no longer type anything into the search bar on Firefox without an error message appearing. So I thought it best to restart the computer then. When restarting, the loading screens took much longer than usual. The guitar pick shape that fills with white was stalling around the top. (I know, I love my complete comprehension of the problem too.) I pressed escape, and was given this message on a black screen.

Welcome to Fedora
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
starting udev:udevd-work[517]: '/sbin/modprobe-b pci: v000014E4d0000170Csv00001028sd000001F1bc02sc00i00' unexpected exit with status 0x0009
[OK]
[OK]
setting hostname (my computers name):

This is as far as I can get. I press Esc again, and I see the completed fedora logo, but nothing else happens. I press Esc again, and I come back to the previous screen, and this time there are two of the above messages. My computer is fairly old (four years), so I understand if the hard drive is deteriorating. I would like to have use of my computer back, but at the very least I would like to recover some files that I have not backed up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Red Hat :: Clean And Restart The Updates By Using Yum?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm working on a workstation with Red Hat Enterprise 5.2 mounted on it, in the last days I had some problem with the update packages tool. In fact, when I tried to download some updates by GUI the graphic interface crashed and it was blocked. So, I tried to clean and restart the updates by using yum, particularly I tried the command yum clean all, but at this point an other error occurs:

'import site' failed; use -v for traceback There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum

So I tried to find a solution on the web, particularly I followed the instruction described on this link [URl]..python-485194/ Using by rmp -e command I removed some yum package (i.e. yum-kmod-1.1.16-13.el5.noarch, pirut and so on) Finally I tried to remove definitively the old version of yum and I tried to reinstall the newer version using by the rpm tool.

General :: Ubuntu Crashed While Installing Updates

Sep 29, 2010

This is my first tryst with linux, so this might seem to be a very trivial problem: While installing updates for ubuntu 9.04, there was an unexpected crash saying that 'E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run sudo dpkg--configure-a' to correct the problem. When I tried to follow the instruction, it said that sudo could not be found. Is this a directory problem? If yes, how do I rectify it?

General :: Installing Updates On Fedora 12 - Screen Flash And Freezes

Jun 23, 2010

I have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lockup On Restart After Auto Updates

Aug 6, 2010

Nearly every time that automatic updates finishes installing the software and requires a restart of the OS, the PC locks up at the 'Ubuntu' screen with some dots beneath it.

I have been just been forcing it down by powering off/on the PC - which I figure is probably not a safe thing to do but don't know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this problem.

I've looked at some of the log files but can't make any sense of most of them nor do I know which log file might show the problem.

Red Hat :: Display A List Non-mandatory Leaf Packages [CentOS 5.4]

Feb 20, 2010

I am searching for a program which may be used in order to display a list of "leaf" packages (i.e. installed packages upon which no other installed packages depend), but only those "leaf" packages which are not marked as being mandatory packages belonging to some installed group. For example, assume we have package group "Example" which comprises the following packages:

core-package-one [ MANDATORY; installed; ]
core-package-two [ MANDATORY; installed; ]
extra-package-alpha [ OPTIONAL; installed; not required by any other package; ]
extra-package-beta [ OPTIONAL; installed; required by extra-package-alpha; ]
extra-package-delta [ OPTIONAL; not installed; ]
Format: <package name> [ <group priority>; <install status>; <leaf status> ]
[Code]....

If such a tool does not exist, I would like to create it. However, I am new to RPM-based systems, and, as such, I am having difficulties finding the necessary documentation. Should I be reading the yum source code? Is there some sort of document describing the package database on RH/CentOS/etc. systems and how 3rd party applications are supposed to work with this database?

Ubuntu :: Installing Causes Windows To Restart Repeatedly During Startup

Aug 11, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu (the full version). I liked Wubi a lot, but that's because I just had to press down and enter during startup. After uninstalling it, I went to the full version, but that's been giving me more trouble than Wubi, lol.

First, it replaced my Windows Boot Manager with GRUB (which IMO sucks because it takes like 15 seconds to load the menu and it lags when you want to press an arrow key). Second, it screwed up my Windows (the first time I started up Windows I got like 50 lines of errors and after that I had to do the disk check thing but now it works). I use Vista x32, and when I try to boot into Windows it gets to the (C)Microsoft with the green loading bars thing and after about 5-10 seconds my computer randomly (without warning, the screen just turns black) restarts. Goes back to the BIOS menu, a full restart.

My first priority is to get Windows fully running without restarts during boot time. Then I'd like to use Windows boot manager to start Ubuntu (I checked with EasyBCD, Ubuntu doesn't show in WBM.

Oh BTW, dual-booting ubuntu 10.04 and WinVista SP2.

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen (11.2) On Restart After Installing Some Items

Nov 11, 2010

A few glitches aside, 11.2 has been very good. Today I installed realcrypt. While in yast, I noticed some other items were set to install. I accepted them along with realcrypt. After the install, clicking the -more applications- button (gnome) did not display the menu, just the mouse wait indicator. After a few tries, I decided to restart. Clicking shutdown did not present the normal menu, but instead instantly shutdown. On restart, I noticed 3-ish orphaned inode(?) messages. After boot completes I'm left with a black screen.I'm running 11.2 Gnome raid-1. The raid array appears to be fine. It emails status on boot, and I received those emails (via google) on the my laptop. I can boot to runlevel 1, so the question is, once there where do I look for cause / fix.
