I have Update Manager set to check for updates daily, to 'only notify about available updates', and have 'important security' and 'Recommended' updates turned on.Since upgrading to 10.04, Update Manager never starts up to tell me that there are updates available. If I run it manually and click on 'Check', I have to type my password in and then it will show that I have updates to install (if there are some of course).
I realise that I shouldn't get a notification icon any more, and that update manager should open instead.Anyone know whether this is something I can fix, or if it's a bug or a problem with the update server that I can't do anything about other than wait?

I just installed Banshee 1.7, now I get this error when I check for updates. It doesn't look like it's affiliated with Banshee but I can't figure out what it's for.
Could not download all repository indexes: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I have openSUSE 11.4 and added repro for Thumbleweed to the basic repro's.As told me I had to do a zypper dup ones for the Thumbleweed-repro to bring system up to date.
1) In KDE I do not see an update-icon in the system-tray anymore: 11.3 had one.Does this mean the auto-update function is disabled?
2) About "levels' of repro's: they are all 99, should Thumbleweed in my case be more important: say 75 ( at least <99 ) ?
3) When I use zypper up I have apps that wants updates and some are "hold back" Is this related to repro's that do refresh but not install ?
4) Someone told me NEVER mesh around with zypper DUP, so he means ONLY use zypper UP.

I would like to know if there's a way of checking which program has new updates without internet connection?
Maybe like having a program to grab the currently available programs from a repo?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I need to know which files were added/modified/moved/deleted after compiling and installing an application from source code, ie. the command-line, Linux equivalent to the venerale InCtrl5.
Is there a utility that does this, or a set of commands that I could run and would show me the changes?
The following is sort of OK, although it includes the lines where changes occured
(eg. "@@ -2,6 +2,7 @@"), and "." and ".." that I don't need: Code: # ls -aR /tmp > b4.txt
# touch /tmp/test.txt
# ls -aR /tmp > after.txt
# diff -u b4.txt after.txt

I was having the dreaded black screen hang during install but got that figured out. Read [url] for my first problem.
Now that I've finally gotten it past the blank screen, it starts the install but then hangs while checking the PCI cards, I included a photo of where it hangs, and I don't have any PCI cards installed.
Here are the specs on my computer:
Everything is brand new, TOTALLY from scratch build.
Mainboard is a MSI NF980-G65
AMD Phenom II 6 core processor
8GB DDR 3 Ram
1 Samsung Solid state hard drive
2 Samsung 1TB HD
Samsung iHAS424 DVD/CD drive
I'm using the on-board graphics which is Nvidia GeForce 8 series

After installing the latest driver for the 335m I am stuck at checking battery state and there is no way I can get to the gui anymore. The only access I have to are the tty's and I don't know what to do. I have already tried finding a solution for a couple of hours, but cannot find any. Please help me solve this problem, I do not want to reinstall again.

Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

I'm having trouble installing visual python, I've downloaded the source package from [URL] as I couldn't find it on yast. On calling ./configure most tests are passed but I get an error which says I need gtkglextmm 1.2 checking in Yast I see this is already installed. Looking in the install.txt it talks about this error and suggests renaming some files, I'm not keen to do this for fear of breaking something else but as it turns out they are already named what they need to be anyway.? Now I'm truly stumped.

On my other PC I was installing updates. It's just frozen up for some reason (assume screen saver kicked and did something) What should I do to minimize any file damage? Pressing the power button may be my only option? And if I do shut it down do I just run updates again to pick up where I've left off. I'm a bit concerned I'll end up with corrupted files

I am running a dual boot system - Ubuntu / Win. XPI installed the security updates in Ubuntu and followed the prompt to restart the computer. Now I can't boot into Ubuntu. When I try, the machine simply restarts. I can still log into windows just fine, but Ubuntu won't load no matter how many times I try.

I updated my kernel and rebooted my system. After a few minutes, my computer said that no hard drive operations were going on and the command line hadn't said anything else so I decided to reboot (i'm VERY impatient) and now when fedora boots,t hangs at a black command line like screen. I left it an hour to see if it would do anything - but nothing! Then i put in a few commands and it didn't respond to any of them

I have a dual boot system (Compaq Presario CQ61) with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed. A while back I updated my Ubuntu system to the 11.04. All went smoothly. Then recently, when the system prompted me, I installed some updates. Since then when I try to boot into Ubuntu I end up at a CLI with (initramfs) as the prompt.I can still successfully boot off of the Windows 7 partition. After reading a lot of articles describing similar problems, and failing to find a fix, I reinstalled 11.04.The system came up without any problems. BUT then, as usual, the system prompted me to install updates. Once I was done installing them and rebooted the computer I was back at the (initramfs) prompt.

On Windows, 99% of the time you have to restart the server after installing updates. In my brief experience with Linux, its never told me I had to. Do you ever have to restart after installing any for Linux? I'm using redhat specifically if that matters.
