I updated my kernel and rebooted my system. After a few minutes, my computer said that no hard drive operations were going on and the command line hadn't said anything else so I decided to reboot (i'm VERY impatient) and now when fedora boots,t hangs at a black command line like screen. For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
When booting FC10 the last two kernel updates I get the normal boot text but it stops atmkrootdev: expecting fs optionsmount: missing mount pointI checked /etc/fstab and it looks like this

I burned the iso images for backtrack and fedora and booted my computer from them but can't figure out how to install kernel-devel on backtrack for example. View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter applying the latest round of updates last night, I turned on my laptop this AM (ATI X1300 Mobility graphics running the default drivers), selected the latest kernel in GRUB, and waited to log in....only problem is that instead of seeing a normal loading screen (Blue with Fedora icon filling in), I instead get a black screen mostly covered in multicolored rectangles. I don't believe there was a graphics driver update, so I'm rather confused as to what went wrong/how to procede. I can still boot using a previous kernel.

After installing latest Fedora 14 updates, my system won't boot anymore into fedora. Just continuous loop no matter if I select previous kernel system won't boot.
Anyone any ideas? I think it might be ATI driver but not 100% sure since I didn't see any D/A related or Kernel updates wasn't upcoming...
Anyways I will figure out this sooner or later but this kind of updates sucks a bit that your system goes suddenly totally unuseable or system won't reboot, sooo , time to move on with an another distro or is Fedora just RedHat's playaground?
I recently updated my software (on Fedora 13) and after the updates had finished installing, it said that the computer required a restart. I noticed that I could no longer type anything into the search bar on Firefox without an error message appearing. So I thought it best to restart the computer then. When restarting, the loading screens took much longer than usual. The guitar pick shape that fills with white was stalling around the top. (I know, I love my complete comprehension of the problem too.) I pressed escape, and was given this message on a black screen.

This is as far as I can get. I press Esc again, and I see the completed fedora logo, but nothing else happens. I press Esc again, and I come back to the previous screen, and this time there are two of the above messages. My computer is fairly old (four years), so I understand if the hard drive is deteriorating. I would like to have use of my computer back, but at the very least I would like to recover some files that I have not backed up.
How do i download and install updates? It says package not found.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.

I have added entries to /etc/rc.local and added kernel tweaks in /etc/grub.d/40_Custom so that my entries wont be erased. I have also added entries in my /etc/fstab. I have read this document in regards to the kernel but I am concerned about my /etc/fstab,/etc/rc.local and /etc/grub.d/40_Linux files being overwritten from updates.

When I double click the file to install, it says:

I am compiling and installing the custom kernel based on the instructions provided in Building_a_custom_kernel on fedoraproject.org/wiki site.
However, according to the instructions, anytime I change anything in the kernel source files(e.g /driver/ata/libata-core.c), I have to create a patch a rebuild the whole kernel and install this new kernel which takes 2 hours. Is there a simpler way of recompiling what has changed(without creating patch) and try that changed kernel? Since my changes are not in the drivers which can be dynamically loaded but is in the static code of the kernel, it is making life cumbersome.Are there any instructions for this? How does other kernel developers manage this?
I updated Fedora 9 yesterday. I rebooted earlier and now the desktop starts for a very short time then disappears followed by a window opening and closing for a few goes. After this nothing! YUM does not work, neither does Firefox! A bug report informed me there was a Python problem but I can find no reference to this anywhere.

I reinstalled F14 and just got about everything up and running like normal again except that I upgraded the kernel by mistake when I was upgrading everything else to current levels. The problem is that I run a hauppauge pvr150 on this mythtv box, and the code for capturing on this card is broken on the latest kernel version. I have the kernel headers and development files installed for the newest kernel that I can't really use, but I didn't install the kernel headers for the older kernel before the upgrade. Now, I am looking for a way to forcefully install the older kernel development files so that I can compile my the proprietary nvidia drivers against it for my adapter. I downloaded the rpm files from the fedora 14 repository directly. Is there an option for rpm that I can use to force the installation?

Until this update, it has been installing PAE designated kernels. When this update occurred, it downloaded the PAE headers and debug, devel and debug-devel PAE components. View 4 Replies View Relatedim having an intel E2180 processor with 2 gb RAM and an nvidia 8400gs graphics card. Lately i installed Fedora 12 on my system and found that with default settings the desktop 3d is not working. so installed the kmod-nvidia using yum after following the instruction.i also edited the grub.conf file to rdblacklist=nouveau to blacklist nouveau drivers.
Then once i rebooted i found two kernels in grub ie the old one and the one with PAE extension. when i booted into the old kernel its Xwindows failed to load showing a black screen and when i tried the new PAE kernel it booted in 640 x 480 resolution. {earlier i was getting a resolution of 1440 x 900 on my 17" widescreen monitor}. it also showed that the nvidia drivers failed to load. I also read in some forums that the PAE kernels are for systems with 4gb+ of ram. So i thought it better to reinstall the whole thing.
then i reinstalled the whole operating system using my fedora 12 dvd and performed the 'upgrade or replace the existing linux distribution'. interestingly now my older kernel has disappeared and the PAE kernel is the one that is remaining.

have a custom kernel I compiled so hardware would all work properly under Ubuntu 8.10 if there is a way to disable it telling me I need to update my Kernel in the updates section just because my 2.6.27-11-generic is different from the one they have. For now I have just been unselecting it when I update everything else but I know myself and one day I will forgot to uncheck it and then I will be recompiling my kernel again.
