Today I installed Fedora12 from the DVD, so this is my first contact with all of you. The last years I ran very well with gentoo, but the time for system maintenance got to big the last few times I updated the system, so I decided to change and here am I. The Problem: My system is newly installed from the DVD and I was trying to run the first update, but got the following errormassage by KPackageKit:
Code:
Error Type:
Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in
main()
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3122, in main
backend.dispatcher(sys.argv[1:])
File : /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 710, in dispatcher
self.dispatch_command(args[0], args[1:])
[Code]...
It occured after informing me about the amount of packages that need to be updated and a message about some dependencies that have to be newly installed. At the moment I'm a bit lost about what to do. Also I realy don't know which system-information would be useful - let me know and I will answer.

Is there a need to set more my repo?

Running System>Adminstration>Software Udates, I get the following errors
[code]...
Similarly, if I click on System>Add/Remove Software>Package Collections, I get No groups could be found. A cache refresh should fix this. I don't see how to do a cache refresh. I tried rpm --rebuilddb, which didn't do any good and um clean all which also did no good. I did manage to do the updates with yum updates But I don't want to have to use yum at the command line all the time to do updates.

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

The first problem is that I cannot use the Arch repository. Every time I try to, it brings up a "no address record" error. I have configured my network interface properly and can ping www.google.com and receive a whole load of crap. Definitely working.
Whats wrong?
The second problem is that the boot-up process hangs for a very long time at "Starting Network." This make my boot of Arch just as slow as *buntu! WTF? Whats wrong there? Aside from that, I am unhappy that my Ethernet card is not detected but thats another question. The only ting I am pleased with right now is the speed of the system, and the fact that I used 4 different file systems on 7 different partitions without a hitch.

On Windows, 99% of the time you have to restart the server after installing updates. In my brief experience with Linux, its never told me I had to. Do you ever have to restart after installing any for Linux? I'm using redhat specifically if that matters.

This is my first tryst with linux, so this might seem to be a very trivial problem: While installing updates for ubuntu 9.04, there was an unexpected crash saying that 'E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run sudo dpkg--configure-a' to correct the problem. When I tried to follow the instruction, it said that sudo could not be found. Is this a directory problem? If yes, how do I rectify it?

I'm running RHEL 5 on a dell server. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.

I have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.

I just installed RPMFusion free and non-free, and now update manager is telling me that it needs to install updates "RPM Fusion (free) Repository Configuration" and "RPM Fusion (non-free) Repository Configuration". When I try to install these I get a message asking 'Do you trust the source of the packages?" and i click 'Yes", it then asks for a password for authentication, and then I get message saying "Could not update packages. I was wondering on the updater service slowly over time installing packages overtop packman packages.
For example, some multimedia guides mention to switch all packages to a certain repository like packman. At some point afterwards system updates will overwrite these.
I don't fully understand how updates work, however, is it needed or possible to set a rule for which repos are used as a reference for system updates?

Today, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.
Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.
So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.

I read a few threads about updating packages in opensuse 11.3, and about switching to a repository, but I still don't understand a few things. On earlier versions of opensuse I was used to set the repository priorities in an order that was convenient for me, and when I did an update, the vendor changed if needed.
Now, vendor change is not allowed by default, and I don't understand the right way to handle repositories, and updates. I found out that in Software Managment there is an option to allow vendor change, but I'm not sure that's the right way.

I downloaded gcc and tried to install that from a tar ball. And it complained about cc: coomand not found. I dont know why is this error being shown because I think cc and gcc are the same. Correct me if I am wrong. My system details are:
I tried to download rpm files for gcc but they dont exist for Suse 10.

I'm trying to install an old version of spotify since the new one keeps crashing, but I get 404 not found from the repository. This is my repository definition:
Code:
deb http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1691381/spotify-client-gnome-support_1 253a0.4.9.302.g604b4fb-1 all.deb
deb http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1691381/spotify-client-qt_1 253a0.4.9.302.g604b4fb-1 i386.deb
Is there something wrong with my definition?
Or is the repository removed?
