I can't get a certain harddrive out of its mounting (screws too tight) , but I want it connected to a different computer. Is it possible to have the harddrive's powercable connected to one computer, and its SATA cable connected to another computer's motherboard? (The powercable is too short to connect it to the other computer.)

That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.
Can Cat5e RJ45 connector crimper be used for Cat 6 connector because I heard cat 6 connector is different from cat 5e connector and also same question for cable tester can cat5e cable tester be used for cat 6 cable?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was attempting to set up my ubuntu 10.04 system to load Synergy before log in to eliminate the second keyboard and mouse on my desk using these instuctions. However, once I log in I get a quick terminal screen which flashes so quick I can't read it then I am put back to the log in screen. I'm pretty sure I just need to remove the syntax I added to the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file and the /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsetup file and redo it (with less beer). The problem is that user account was the only user account I'd ever bothered setting up on this system and I can't get logged in.
Is there another account built in that I could use or do I need to hook the HD up to a SATA - USB cable and edit the files from another machine?

When the power cable comes out, the laptop blacks out. I mean, it kind of goes into sleep mode, but only with the screen going dark. Anything running keeps running.
I know it is a bug, and I did my homework. I researched it. It usually comes to the point where you need to disable an "event" on "power cable out" in the power management settings of gnome. I did that, but the problem is still there.
I was turning off the computer before, loosing all my work, because there is no way to bring the display back. However recently I discovered two work arounds:
1) Restart X server: CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (you loose stuff)
2) FN+CTRL+ALT+F7 which takes you back to your desktop, you do not loose anything.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 laptop with Nvidia NVS 4200m Graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 11.04.
Before I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I had went to my bios and disabled Nvidia Optiums and changed the graphics to Discrete Graphics. Then inserted my Ubuntu 11.04 CD and installed.
With this I had gotten unity to work. However when I pull the power cable from the laptop my screen freezes. Also if press "FN"+ Home or END to change the brightness of the screen my screen freezes and no longer able to move the mouse or press anything on keyboard.
Did anyone ever run into this problem and or fix this issue? I can get the graphics working properly with Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card.
I want connect my two Linux PCs running in 2.6 kernel via cross over cable. To do this I have done the following settings after a Google search:
In PC1
ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up route add default gw 10.10.11.13 eth0 (default gateway which is ip of pc2 )
In PC2
ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.13 netmask 255.255.255.0 up route add default gw 10.10.11.16 eth0 (default gateway which is ip of pc1 )
Then i tried pinging i could not able to connect.Are these above settings enough or any thing am i missing?

I can go out to the Internet so I know I have a valid connection.

I have installed Mint 8 on my HP Presario lap top. When booted up using XP I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem. But, when I boot up with Mint 8 I receive a msg that there is no connection to the internet. I then tried by hooking up to the router with a cable and it still shows "not connected to the internet" msg. I tried rebooting while hooked up with the cable and same result.

My problem is that I am not able to set up a LAN and share my internet connection through a crossover cable. I have a USB 3G data card for my internet connection, and getting a router for it is a mite expensive. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with grub installed, and nothing else. I'd like to install Debian on it without having to burn a CD. (and I don't have any flash disks.) It has a nice ethernet card, and I have another computer right next to it with an ethernet card. I also have an ethernet cable. However, I don't have any router free which I can mess with for these purposes. As I've looked up, apparently modern Ethernet cards don't need crossover cables, normal cables will work for this type of connection.
I've tried several different "tutorials" on how to set up a netboot server, but
None of them are complete. All of them assume that you understand how DHCP works, and that you can do things like set up a dnsmasq server. I don't understand the DHCP protocol, with submasks and whatnot (I know that it is the protocol for assigning computer network addresses, and that's it), and I don't think I should have to in order to simply connect two computers. All of the tutorials give you incomplete configuration files, and ask you to fill in things which I don't understand, and for me it doesn't make sense to customize these settings, as I just want to connect them and I really don't care what ip address the TFTP server has or whatnot. All of these assume that you are going through a router. I am not. When I try googling for ways to directly connect two linux computers with an ethernet cable, I can't even find instructions, just more references to "you need crossover cables".
So basically, I have two computers directly connected by ethernet cables. Tell me what packages I need to install, what the contents of my configuration files should look like, and what, if any, commands I need to run in order that when I turn on my second computer, and select network boot, it will start up a minimal debian system.
EDIT: Hmmm, it looks like I actually have a linux kernel installed too, but no root filesystem (so no other programs besides busybox).
I am attempting to get a Dual Monitor Display using aticonfig (and/or manual editing my xorg.conf file). My graphics card (a Radeon HD 4350 with latest ati drivers ) has only a single output but I am using a splitter cable to connect it to two monitors.
I am want one monitor to be 1600x1200 and the second monitor to be 800x600.
This is the command I had tried to no avail.
aticonfig -fq --initial --dtop=horizontal,reverse --resolution=0,1600x1200,1280x1024,1024x768 --mode2=800x600
What am I missing? Should I be using this configuration utility? Or should I be trying to manual edit my xorg.config? All the information I have been able to find seems specific to Dual Head Displays.

So my problem is: With internet cable I have connected to modem which support IPTV, so I can watch it, and I can't browse. With my wireless connection I browsing, and I can't watching IPTV.
I need anwser to this if can I set cable connection to only VLC (with which I can watching IPTV), and wireless connection to other programs or only Firefox?
