Ubuntu Installation :: When Pull The Power Cable From The Laptop Screen Freezes

Aug 11, 2011

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 laptop with Nvidia NVS 4200m Graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 11.04.

Before I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I had went to my bios and disabled Nvidia Optiums and changed the graphics to Discrete Graphics. Then inserted my Ubuntu 11.04 CD and installed.

With this I had gotten unity to work. However when I pull the power cable from the laptop my screen freezes. Also if press "FN"+ Home or END to change the brightness of the screen my screen freezes and no longer able to move the mouse or press anything on keyboard.

Did anyone ever run into this problem and or fix this issue? I can get the graphics working properly with Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card.

General :: Laptop Freezes When On Battery Power

Jun 1, 2011

I've got a problem with my laptop and I finally decided to try to solve it. My computer sometimes (not everytime) freezes. It's just when I'm using battery power. I figured out that this is not connected with some specific action (e.g. some app crash), it can freeze 1 minute after start or 10 minutes, I think it's random. I've checked my /var/log/messages.log file and these are the last messages before freeze (exactly at 9:16:15):

Code:

I'm using Arch Linux x64, Gnome Shell and have the newest updates.

What's wrong with my laptop? Where should I look for errors?

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop Locks Hard On Login Screen If No Ethernet Cable Plugged In

Jul 15, 2011

Acer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.

It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.

Ubuntu :: Screen Of Old HP Laptop (running Natty) Freezes And Eventually Turns Black

Jul 28, 2011

The screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.

I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. Now when I start the computer and select Ubuntu from GRUB, I get this:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Graphic Card Crashes Whole Laptop / Screen Shows Some Glitch And Freezes?

Dec 6, 2010

Well, i guess it is the graphic card:

I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.

After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.

I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.

My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3

I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)

Ubuntu / Apple :: Blackout After Power Cable Comes Out - MacBook Pro

Dec 23, 2010

A MacBook Pro here (1151A, 1,2?, anyway a 2006 model). Ubuntu 8.04

When the power cable comes out, the laptop blacks out. I mean, it kind of goes into sleep mode, but only with the screen going dark. Anything running keeps running.

I know it is a bug, and I did my homework. I researched it. It usually comes to the point where you need to disable an "event" on "power cable out" in the power management settings of gnome. I did that, but the problem is still there.

I was turning off the computer before, loosing all my work, because there is no way to bring the display back. However recently I discovered two work arounds:

1) Restart X server: CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (you loose stuff)

2) FN+CTRL+ALT+F7 which takes you back to your desktop, you do not loose anything.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Freezes On A Clean Install With A Laptop?

Feb 6, 2010

Scenario new-clean laptop computer "Hundyx W765TUN" with this test results:

Devices:
- Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz: well managed with Live-CD
- VGA NVIDIA G98M/GeForce-G105M: well managed with Live-CD
- CD/DVD Matshita UJ890AS: well managed with Live-CD
- Audio Intel ICH9/82801I: well managed with Live-CD

[Code]...

On every installation I've cleaned the MBR and made new partitioning at all for a single system. Tried to partition the disk manually and tried the "use entire disk" option with the automatic wizard. Same results on all cases, when the installation process goes well at all.

I've tried also to leave the computer some hours with the "GRUB Loading." message, but it doesn't move and remains with the same screen/text. Cursor remains blinking all the time under the GRUB message. In all cases Control+Alt+Del works to reboot. With hundreds of installations made, I've never found the same situation. It would be so strange to be a hardware issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Freezes After Boot With Fresh Install 10.04?

May 22, 2010

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-k195hp laptop, in which i've installed Ubuntu 10.04. Before installation i tried the Livedisk environment to make sure that everything would work out okay.

The results were fine, ubuntu even got the onboard Wireless card working which was causing problems in windows. But after the install ubuntu has become erratic. It sometimes boots and does a lot of work but other times it'll boot and freeze as soon as i move the mouse, or even earlier. I am pretty certain the CD was not the cause as i've already used it to install 10.04 in another system and i'm writing from it right now. I got the 10.04 iso on the day it came out and thought that maybe it wasn't complete so tried updating my install, but it had an error during the update installation.

Now even the live CD won't work as it hangs in the loading screen.

The screenshot explains the situation: dscf0107.jpg I know I could always use one of the alternate downloads and install the OS from it. In terms of what I changed before the problem happened, I don't recall changing any system settings. On possibility is my changing things to skip the login screen and go strait to my account, but I believe I had done that a few shutdown/restarts before.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 - Freezes On The Screen

Jul 19, 2010

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (32 bit). Everything seemed to go well with no errors until the point where the system needed to restart at the end. After it restarted (and every power cycle since), it gets to the "ubuntu" screen with the moving cycle of square dots underneath, and stays there for ever. The screen resolution is absolutely goofed up, the word Ubuntu cannot be clearly read (looks like it is way overdriving the monitor). All letters seem to have like vertical bars on either side.

Below the Ubuntu and the dots, there appears to be two lines of completely illegible text (they just look like multicolored boxes about the size of characters.

I tried using the shift key to get to grub and try to boot into recovery mode--no luck. I tried using grub to boot to the previous kernel--no luck. It just sits there at the Ubuntu screen with this weird resolution/appearance.

I can boot from the Live CD and things work fine. I can see the file system, grub files etc. Any help debugging this would be most useful.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Freezes When In Dual Screen?

May 11, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 11.04 for some time now and I'm experiencing many severe bugs. One of this is very bothering and I still can't find a solution. I experienced many problems maybe related to this, but seems to have gone away by downgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati. Still anyway, when in dual screen, after some time, the screen completely freezes. The system is completely freezed, I can't even go to a shell, but I noticed it is possible to log in via ssh.

I've never had problems with ATI opensource drivers. Now I even noticed a logout problem anyway (which is known as far as I know). Is there anyone else experiencing the same? I found some others complaining about something similar, but not exactly the same and still no solution. Is it possible to somehow debug this when it happens? I have to note that I'm still using kernel version 2.6.35 because the new 2.6.38 is not booting at all. But I don't know whether this is the problem or not.
