General :: Sendmail Configuration Over A Cable Modem
Feb 19, 2010
I have a CentOS system running. I want to get mail off it to my yahoo account.
I did a test mailx command and it goes out of the queue but never gets to my yahoo mail.
I am using a cable modem.
I can go out to the Internet so I know I have a valid connection.
I am guessing I need to set something up so the cable company will relay my mail for me.
I know i can pull pop mail down and sen it using my account.
Do I need to configure something in the sendmail.cf file to do this?
I just went into my email and say this ...patial msg included...
(reason: 553 5.7.1 [BL21] Connections will not be accepted from 98.249.136.1 9, because the ip is in Spamhaus's list; see [url])

I am using webmin for my daily tasks. I have fedora 13, whenever I click on ''Sendmail M4 Configuration'' or Outgoing Addresses (generics)'' I get the following error message
Quote:
The Sendmail M4 configuration base directory /usr/share/sendmail-cf was not found on your system, or is not the correct directory. Maybe it has not been installed (common for packaged installs of Sendmail), or the module config is incorrect. I read documentation at sendmail.org, it seems that structure of directories for send mail has been changed in version sendmail-8.1.4 shipped with FC13. In webmin config module we have
Quote:
Sendmail M4 base directory = /usr/share/sendmail-cf
which is not there. I did a locate / sendmail-cf on the command line, it finds nothing

I got a new cable modem so I could get rid of the one I've been leasing from the cable company. It is a Motorola sb6120. Everything is fine with the ISP, it's approved for operation on their network, the only hitch was I had to use my Windows laptop to run their activation software.
At any rate, with the new modem installed, I hop on my Linux box and go to work. I'm seeing some terrible delays in looking up names. When I look with firebug, all the dns lookups for new names are taking 15+ seconds. First I just think maybe the names aren't cached or something is weird for a minute and it will get better, but no. After several restarts and then a couple days persevering with the new cable modem, all DNS queries are still terribly slow (including zypper, mail client, web client).
Suddenly I remember an issue I was having with, I believe version 11.1 when I first installed it. For just the computer on my network with a fixed IP address, DNS resolution was slow like this and if I disabled IPv6 then all was well. I believe there was even a patch issued back then for gethostbyname() that was supposed to fix the issue? So, when I disable IPv6, DNS lookup is back to normal. The two Linux computers on my network had been working fine with IPv6 and the old modem, though, and the Windows box is still working fine even with the new modem.
I can disable IPv6 and make it fast again, but really why should I have to?

A netmap scan of my WAN IP address (cable modem) shows;
23/tcp open telnet?
8080/tcp open tcpwrapped
I've called Linksys and Netgear and they have said there is no user adjustable configuration allowed for the Cable Modems.
How am I supposed to close the open ports if the manufacturer doesn't allow access ?

I am writing a simple script which will transmit files over a serial connection. I have simplified the setup to test the solution, so the final configuration will be a bit more complicated.
Current setup:
1. 2 RS232 com ports connected with a null modem in between.
2. Open minicom on both
3. Put in 19200,8,N,1 as parameters
4. Open text travels both ways
5. Files sent over Zmodem transfer well.
Both serial adapters are USB, but I tried it also with real com ports, and same story. For simplicity, I will call one adapter "receiving" and the other "sending" to signify from which side I want to send the files through zmodem.
Then I close minicom on the "sending" site without reseting the port (I have also tried setting everything up with stty)
On sending site:
Code:
I tried googling but no solution helps. Please do not try to suggest to use minicom on both sides, because this is going to be an unattended process in the end.
How to transfer a file with zmodem using rz and sz without minicom.

I entered my IP address, Netmask, and DNS Servers into the network, not using DHCP. This was how I was able to achieve a network connection.
I am connected to the modem, but I cannot get internet.

I cannot connect my Dell Inspiron 1300 through the NetworkManager "wired" connection, when I try to go direct to the cable modem. It fails to connect.
If I connect the cable modem to my (linksys WRT54GS) wireless router, and then connect my laptop to a wired port in the router, it connects in seconds, successfully.
This has happened to me 2 other times, when I tried to connect my laptop to a client's cable modem, because my client did not have a wireless router available, in their home.
My wireless works fine. This has me perplexed. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and NetworkManager Applet 0.8
I've tried some things to see what is going on, such as "ifconfig" "dhclient" as well as modifying the "Auto eth0" parameters and adding my laptop's MAC address, etc. Results were no fix or solution. I feel like I'm headed down the wrong road. Would someone set me straight? I have a feeling this is simpler than I think.
Do I have to actually reset my own or someone's cable modem to get this to work? I don't want to do that unless there's no other way. Is there? Let me know what commands I can or should run.

Running 2.6.29-gentoo-r1 on a Sun Ultrasparc 10 with a Sun Happy Meal on eth0 connected directly to my cable modem. Intermittently, with a frequency between a few hours and a few days, I lose internet connectivity. Running ifconfig eth0 indicates all is well and I have a valid IP address but I cannot even ping the cable modem's management address; pings to 127.0.0.1 and eth0's IP address do get a reply but no other address I've tried does. I can 'fix' the problem by issuing
Code:
If I check the CM logs, it appears that it has rebooted itself prior to the loss of connectivity. The strange thing is that the incoming traffic doesn't seem to be affected by this, my PSAD log is full of incoming scans even during the periods when I can't connect to the net. I suspect this is an ISP problem (they own the CM);

Running Gentoo with kernel 2.6.29 on a Sparc Ultra 10. I'm having problems with my cable modem connection failing, so I've added a static route that enables me to log into the modem's diagnostics page at 192.168.100.1 when the connection drops; my /etc/conf.d/net looks like this (with the comment lines removed).
Code:
dns_domain_lo="MYNETWORK"
config_eth1=("192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255")
config_eth0=("dhcp")
routes_eth0=(
"192.168.100.1/32 via 0.0.0.0"
) dhcpcd_eth0="-N"
This works but after a period of several hours to several days, this static route disappears from the routing table.

But I cannot virtual machine this, because it would need to raise up a ms windows explorer, something that cannot be done in a virtual machine on guest OS.

I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.

I'm currently running a server at home with F13. Now I've set up my sendmail config to relay through another server because my ISP blocks outgoing email. Now recently I've noticed that they have stopped this server from relaying emails so i need to sort out another way to send out.My current sendmail config has this added which was the relay server i was using.
# "Smart" relay host (may be null)DSrelay.02broadband.co.uk
Now i either want to set up the server to email through my main ISP using a username / password or go through my main email provider Gmail.Any ideas on how to set up either on Fedora? I've seen guides for setting up gmail but never anything related to Fedora and I'm a bit stuck

I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.
