General :: Looking To Install System From CDROM While Other Distro Running?
Mar 19, 2010
Laptop has broken internal CDROM. I booted with floppy to get Puppy 431 installed from USB stick. Now I have USB CDROM access thru Puppy. I can mount and see the CD fine.
Is it possible to boot or install from a currently installed linux distro (Puppy)?
I have a second free partition ext2 available, sda2, and GRUB is working fine for me on boot.
(machine also doesn't have boot from USB option, yes, it's old, a project I am working on, I have Nimblex in CD now, I think it's a live cd, I would like to try a few different ones by installing to sda2 and wiping if ng.)

I'd like to build a compact x86 host running off a CompactFlash or some equivalent solid-state memory instead of from a SATA disk, to reduce the risk of failure once they're deployed at customers' premises. Those are SOHO users, so performance is not an issue, but stability is (The less I have to drive to replace faulty hardware and restore data, the better.)
Do you know if the usual suspects (Ubuntu, CentOS, Gentoo, etc.) can easily be made to run from solid-state memory, and if yes, is there some good documentation to customize them thusly?
I assume it's just a matter of tweaking /etc/fstab, but it could be more involved.

I searched and found several solution but those are distro specific. I need to find out if distro is running in live mode (from CD, USB) instead it's installed on hdisk. The solution should be independent of distribution.

Could it own Debian? which Debian distro/cdrom would you recommend? Just for a internet, got with wifi running and surfing with X.
I guess that kde 1.0 or kde 2.0 was running very fast on it.
From scratch or can I get an already sources.list for old pc with old stable stuffs - debian ?
I found some debs there, might I use them? and concerning the cdrom?

I'm sure the answer is yes but, I'm wondering if you could put a newer distro of Linux on an older Mac (for example an iMac G4 or G5).

We are having a lot of trouble with this.
We need a command line version of Linux like ttylinux. Any command line will do with the latest kernel. It should be around 50 megs.
But the problem is, all these small Linux versions are LiveCD or have a compressed file system.
We need a SMALL linux distro, that we can install UNCOMPRESSED (no squashfs etc) on a hard disk.
This is so simple I'm sure I'm missing something..

I think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home

whenever i try to burn mp3 from a disk in the cdrom, the system will freeze up solid, keyboard, screen, mouse, the whole shebang. ubuntu will see an audio disk in the cdrom, and i can play some tracks off it (sometimes), but trying to copy it to mp3s will crash everything after about 2-3 minutes. somewhere between tracks 2 - 4. anyone else have issues? i have tried a different cdrom, and cables... and i hate to say it but it works under windows.

I currently own a Viliv x70ex UMPC. It has Windows 7 Home Prem. currently loaded on it, but I would very much like to set up a dual-boot partition for a a Linux install. My current issues stem from the fact that thus far to date, my research has essentially come up with more issues than solutions as far as this goes. Among other things, I've seen lots of references to driver issues for the touch screen, graphic issues with the Intel GMA that's installed, and so on. If anyone out there can shed some light on this problem, or be able to direct me to a resource with a tutorial for doing this,

Is there any easy way (i.e. command or file to view) to find out what distribution I am running? I know that my /etc/apt/sources.list has entries for stable, testing and unstable but I hear that (as of the 30th) "stable" has become Sarge. So if I performed an apt-get update then an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday should I assume that I am now running Sarge?

If I can install more than one distro on my Multiple boot pc. I already have, Mandriva, Win xp, and Win 7 on. But you know how it is, you want to try out all the linux systems if that is possible. I guess using a live cd would allow me to do it. I do not want to bugger up the systems I already have on.
