General :: Mounting A Partition As Music Folder In Ubuntu 10.4

Sep 6, 2010

I have installed a new hard drive and partitioned some space that I am wanting to use for keeping my Music files on. I have entered a line into the /etc/fstab file that I believe mounts the partition properly, but it is giving root owner ship of the partition. Is there a better way of doing this? perhaps mounting the drive some where else and using a hard link? the line I have so far in my fstab is

/dev/sdb1 /home/me/Music ext4 defaults,user 0 2

But this is still sowing the drive on my desktop, it also replaces the the name of Music in my places with the fact that it is a drive of such a size.

Ubuntu :: Banshee / All IPod 5G-music Is Displayed Under Video Folder / Music Folder Is Empty

Mar 20, 2011

At the moment I use Rhythmbox to acces my music and my iPod 5G. I would however like to use Banshee, but in Banshee all my iPod 5G-music is displayed under the video folder, while the music folder is empty. Any idea why?And also I have several albums with different artists on them, which gets spread out on i.e. 10 single albums even though they belong to the same album. This happens - as far as I can tell - after I've accessed the iPod from Rhythmbox (which is part of the reason why I wanna use Banshee).

I have a folder on my drive, which I would like to try mounting as a iso9660 cd. I've tried

mount -t iso9660 131/ ~/mnt/ -o loop

but mount complains that it is a folder. Is there any way to fake it into thinking it's a dvd? The contents a friend of mine copied are in fact dvd contents from a dvd, and I'd like to be able to view without opening up the "vob" files.

convince mount that a folder is a cd?

General :: How To Rename Music Folder Indicating Bitrate

May 3, 2011

I have a large collection of music albums sorted in folders which are named like this: "Zombie Ritual - 2004 - Night Of The Zombie Party" (%{artist} - %{year} - %{album}). I want to rename them so as to be indicative of the bitrate, for example, "Zombie Ritual - 2004 - Night Of The Zombie Party" => "Zombie Ritual - 2004 - Night Of The Zombie Party (@320)". It will be hard to do this manually. I tried to use EasyTag and Kid3 to do this, but they cannot add bitrate to tags.

In the past, mounting them on my Macbook and executing the command to disable the journaling often worked (even though it would tell me that journaling was already disabled) but I would love to have a solution which works every time.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 11.04 Mounting Windows Music From LAN On Startup

May 17, 2011

My problem is that in order to get Banshee to play my music thats in a Windows system on the LAN, I have to mount the volume first. This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

Code: sudo mount -a smb://home/p/My Music /home/username/Music/Music on Home This didn't mount anything. In fact, I couldn't even cd to the directory "smb://home/p/My Music". And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.

Dec 26, 2009

i decided to try archlinux in my pc a while ago so i installed it... after three months i started to miss slackware so i decided to reinstall it but i wanted to save my /home partition so when i installed slackware i left my /home partition from arch hoping that i could just mount it on slackware...but now when i try to mount that /home partition this is what i get:

bash-3.1# mount /dev/sda4
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda4,missing codepage or helper program,or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
code....

So i dont really know what is going on here but i hope somebody could help me because i really NEED to get the data from that partition.

oh and by the way i installed slackware on ext4 partitions and the /home partition from arch is ext3 so i dont know if that's maybe the problem o_O?

General :: Mounting Ext2 Partition With Write Permissions?

Oct 25, 2009

I need to mount my ext2 partition with write permissions for an average user. Right now, I can only write to the volume using sudo or the root account.

/etc/fstab:

Code:

# Filesystem: Mountpoint: Type: Options: Dump: FSCK:
/dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults 1 1
/dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

[code]....

can't add the options uid=500,gid=500 to the ext2 volume because it says "bad option" I have 1 question. If you have a volume listed in /etc/fstab, and you try to mount it with different options than the ones listed in fstab, will it mount with the new options, or the fstab options?(e.x. if I try to mount /dev/sda6 with: mount-o auto, user, exec,rw,async. Will it mount with async or sync?)

General :: Mounting - Checking Or Reading Partition ( Probably A Physical Damage )?

Mar 21, 2010

I have a problem when trying mounting, checking my ext3 partition. Is a external HD with my "portable" Linux system. Suddenly started to fail, when I try to boot it, the GRUB can't locate the config file, and show me the command line. I boot from my internal HD and try to mount it and have this messages.

Code:
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Unhandled sense code
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE,SUGGEST_OK
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error

[Code]...

1.- What exactly is in this first sectors (ext3 metadata?)

2.- Is there some way to fix this quickly, maybe with some "sectors relocation", Or re-create the first logical sectors.

3.- If not, who could i make a full backup (something like dd copy), of all the partition.

4.- How fix it?, even with a long prosses, i don't know, maybe backup the file structure (with forensic tools) and copy into a new (and re-located) partition. This is my last option because the forensic tools sometime can't recover all files and sometimes only parts, or very old files.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Unable To Access Music, Documents, Pictures, Etc. After Mounting Macintosh HD?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.

I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

Ubuntu :: Media Folder Has Extra Folder Titled With Non-existent Partition?

Nov 24, 2010

When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

Ubuntu :: Mounting A Partition On A Partition Unstable?

Jan 19, 2011

I have come across the following statement: " When a FAT32 partition is mounted at '/media/windows', all access to '/media/windows' and everything below it is transparently handled by the Linux kernel using the 'vfat' module. Applications need not know they're dealing with anything else. However, mounting a partition at a location inside of another mounted partition is unpredictable, unstable, and generally a bad idea. "

Is it correct? Most of my partitions are mounted on /home, which is on a separate partition; and I have one "level 3" partition. I have been using Ubuntu for nearly three years so far with no problems (except for /home losing it's format once).

General :: Move A Folder From One Partition To Another?

Mar 12, 2010

Anyways, I recently got into the whole HTPC scene, and picked up an Acer Revo for my self, with a media center OS (XBMC) that was apparently modded from Ubuntu. Keep in mind that I can only use the terminal for any of this, as the GUI is just for video settings, etc.

So, XBMC just totally crashed on me, and the GUI stopped working. The files were still there, I just couldn't watch them. After many hours of tinkering, I decided to just reinstall XBMC, but make two partitions, and then move my movies and stuff to the new, working partition, and afterwards, delete the old, non working one.

I just don't know how to move from one partition to another.

So, can someone explain, in absolute layman terms, how to move my "Movies" folder from my first partition, to the New one?
