General :: Move A Folder From One Partition To Another?

Mar 12, 2010

Anyways, I recently got into the whole HTPC scene, and picked up an Acer Revo for my self, with a media center OS (XBMC) that was apparently modded from Ubuntu. Keep in mind that I can only use the terminal for any of this, as the GUI is just for video settings, etc.

So, XBMC just totally crashed on me, and the GUI stopped working. The files were still there, I just couldn't watch them. After many hours of tinkering, I decided to just reinstall XBMC, but make two partitions, and then move my movies and stuff to the new, working partition, and afterwards, delete the old, non working one.

I just don't know how to move from one partition to another.

So, can someone explain, in absolute layman terms, how to move my "Movies" folder from my first partition, to the New one?

General :: Create A Softlink To Move Some Library Folder?

Dec 2, 2010

I'm running out of disk space in root, so I decide to move /usr/lib64 directory to other partition by creating moving the whole directory to new location and create a softlink in the old location. What I'm planning to do is:

1. Copy the whole directory to new location

2. Make sure if there's no problem in the copy process

3. Create a softlink in the old location pointing to the new location.

However, when I'm comparing the old location and the new location using du command, there's some discrepancies between those two where the new location contain bigger size than the old one. How is this possible?

Is this the proper way to save disk space by creating a softlink?

General :: Move Folders That Contain A File With A Specific Extension To A Destination Folder?

Oct 3, 2010

Many years ago, I converted a portion of my files to an arbitrary format with a specific extension. i no longer desire to have them in this format and i would like begin the process of replacing them because conversion is not an appropriate solution. unfortunately, they are mixed in separate folders of the same root folder with files in my current format of a different extension. I feel it would make this process easier if I were to move every folder that contained a file with the undesired format to a separate root folder. The files are stored on a Linux server and shared via samba. How can I do this with a couple of commands or a script? I am open to other suggestions as well. I want to avoid time spent editing text files. Ultimately, I'd like a command that produced a list of full paths for folders, sorted by the number of levels would be a nice touch. A list of all of the files is clearly not what I'm looking for.

General :: Move Partition In GParted?

This 1 MiB space is kind of annoying and I'd like to merge with any other partition except /dev/sda1, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda4. When I right click on the unallocated partition, the only available operation is "New". And, if I click on "New", I get the following error message.

It is not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions

how to go about merging the small unallocated space with other partitions?

General :: Move The Srv Directory To Another Partition?

Jun 28, 2010

When installing Ubuntu (10.04) I chose the /home to be installed in a separate partition.I would now like to move the /srv directory into the same partition. The problem I found is that Ubuntu did not make a /home directory inside the partition itself. It just places the account directories in the partition and mounts it to /home. So I cannot just easily move the /srv folder into the partition.

How can I:

Move those account directories into a home folder inside the partition Make that new home folder the default /home folder. ditto with the /srv folder, or any I choose in the future.

General :: Possible To Move Ubuntu Primary Partition To Logical / Extended?

Nov 5, 2010

I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

Ubuntu :: Move A Folder To Another Folder?

Dec 1, 2010

I would like to move a folder to another folder but I just want to merge the two folders.

For example,

say I have Folder B which has the following files in it
- fileA
- fileB
- fileC

Folder A has the following files in it
- fileA
- fileB
- fileC
- fileD
- fileE

And I want to move folder A to folder B.

The objective here is to ensure that existing fileA, fileB and fileC are not replaced but fileD and fileE are to be copied across.

Is there an easier way to do this in linux?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Move Grub From One Partition To Another Partition?

May 8, 2010

I don't know if this is possible however would like to know how to move grub from one partition to another.I may not have explainded that very well. I have a computer that i use to checkout different linux distros, however since the introduction of grub2 things have become difficult. I have a number of primary partitions on the one hdd If I install a o/s that uses grub on a partition and another partition has a o/s that uses grub2 then on startup the o/s with grub2 no longer appears on the grub start up screen so I cannot boot into the grub2 o/s. The reverse is ok i.e. if I install a grub2 o/s after a grub o/s all appear on the grub start up screen.

This leaves me in the situation where I have to always reinstall a grub2 o/s after i install a grub o/s. Hope that makes sense! This is why it would be easier (I hope) to be able to move grub from one o/s to another. I must admit I don't really understand it all that well and I know that mbr plays a role in it, however I think it's correct that the mbr can remain on an o/s yet grub is on another?

When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.
