Ubuntu Multimedia :: 11.04 Mounting Windows Music From LAN On Startup

May 17, 2011

My problem is that in order to get Banshee to play my music thats in a Windows system on the LAN, I have to mount the volume first. This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

Code: sudo mount -a smb://home/p/My Music /home/username/Music/Music on Home This didn't mount anything. In fact, I couldn't even cd to the directory "smb://home/p/My Music". And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.

Ubuntu :: Mounting Windows Partition On Startup?

Feb 18, 2011

I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 on my win7 laptop (Acer Timeline 3810T) with wubi. I can mount the laptop's windows partition with no issues using NTFS Config (after installing hal), but every time after I reboot ubuntu tells me that it cannot mount the windows partition. If I reopen NTFS config after reboot now my previously-mounted partition shows as having 0Gb of data and there is a new /host partition that represents the windows partition. I can then mount it again by renaming it into /media/Windows and it again works until a reboot.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Listening To Music From Windows?

Aug 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and I'm liking it so far. However, I still have Windows 7 installed as my primary OS, and I have accumulated a large collection of music. However, I cannot listen to this music in my Ubuntu system, which is a shame. I'm almost certain I am simply missing something, though I would like to double-check and ensure I am wrong before going further. Is it possible to access my music from my Windows partition on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS partition?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Migration Of Music From Windows 7 Professional To 10.10?

Mar 7, 2011

I have a Windows 7 partition with all my music. I'm a beginning Ubuntu user and I really like it and so would like to have my music in Ubuntu to create playlists and such since I'm spending more time here (in Ubuntu) and will likely spend most of it unless I require a very specific process. As it stands, I've been going back to my Windows partition purely because my playlists are all set up and all my music is in my music player.

How do I migrate the music from that partition to my Ubuntu one without simply copying GBs and GBs of music and taking up twice the space for the same thing?

refrain from suggesting an external drive, as I don't have the money for one currently.

General :: Mounting A Partition As Music Folder In Ubuntu 10.4

Sep 6, 2010

I have installed a new hard drive and partitioned some space that I am wanting to use for keeping my Music files on. I have entered a line into the /etc/fstab file that I believe mounts the partition properly, but it is giving root owner ship of the partition. Is there a better way of doing this? perhaps mounting the drive some where else and using a hard link? the line I have so far in my fstab is

/dev/sdb1 /home/me/Music ext4 defaults,user 0 2

But this is still sowing the drive on my desktop, it also replaces the the name of Music in my places with the fact that it is a drive of such a size.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Every Music Player Wants To Stream Music?

Apr 19, 2010

I've had an awkward problem lately: every music player I use wants to instead of play music from my USB external hard drive, stream music from it. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing that. It may have been an accidental key-combo I pressed, thinking I had another window targeted and didn't bother pressing it again for my Totem music player. So I closed out of Totem in hopes that Rythmbox would work like totem used to. Well, it doesn't. It wants to stream music now.The problem with the streaming music is trivial, but here it is: I have a playlist with a little over 300 songs. I have Totem set to shuffle and repeat my music. Streaming music with it makes it just stop randomly after a few songs, and when I try to pause music and play it later it takes a good 30 seconds before it kicks back in at the beginning of the song.Like I always ask because I don't know enough to give back to the community yet, can anyone help me? Thanks.

Networking :: Mounting Permissions Error / Mounting A Windows Host?

May 28, 2009

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:

Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.

I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Unable To Access Music, Documents, Pictures, Etc. After Mounting Macintosh HD?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.

I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

Not a very serious flaw but since I upgraded to ubuntu 10.04, I thought I'd like to have everything in perfect working order.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mounting Partition Not During Startup

Jun 19, 2010

yesterday I did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and this time it was a mixed experience, most thing worked, but some things like gdm, sound and other setting need(ed) corrections to work again (as in 9.10).In 9.10 I setup my system so that the second partition (data) was only manually mounted after asking for my password.

After updating 10.04 I asking me at every bootup whether I want to manually mount or skip the mounting. And when I manually mount the partition I don't need any password anymore. Why did the upgrade change my setting? Not being an linux-expert, having not documented how I have done the previous setup and being unlucky with google, I could use some pointers in the right direction.Even if I sound not so happy at the moment I really appreciate the good work that went into ubuntu. After setting up my system after each new installation or upgrade I enjoyed a carefree time with ubuntu (where I forget everything I need to setup my system because it just works as it should).

Ubuntu Networking :: Trouble Mounting NAS On Startup

Aug 22, 2010

I am having difficulties to mount my NAS (zyxel nsa210) on startup. After some online research, i stumbled upon the "solution".I was advised to write an entry into the fstab-file and that's what i did.And this actually worked like a charm and i was then able to find NAS in "Places". (Not on my desktop since i disabled it). BUT this works not after booting up...meaning there is nothing like NAS in "Places" and i have to mount it manually by using the "sudo mount -a"-command...there is nothing automatic about this solution...So now my question for everyone capable of answering me: "Where did i go wrong? i have installed smbfs and the folder where the NAS should be mounted in actually exists, so the usual suspects should be ruled out i guess

Fedora :: Mounting Partition Upon Startup

Mar 31, 2010

I've migrated back to Fedora as I am just displeased with the majority of debian based distros and Sabayon at the moment. Fedora has grown up quite a bit since FC9 and I'm here to stay. I keep all of my media and documents on a seperate partition on my disk and am wondering how I can have it set to automatically mount it upon startup. It gets kind of annoying having to re-enter my password every reboot just to mount the partition that 90% of my time is spent on.

Eventually I want to leave windows completely but I would still want to store all the ubuntu files on the documents drive.

I can go to "places" and mount the documents drive but what I would like to do is when I fire up ubuntu that the documents drive mounts automatically.

Fedora Networking :: Mounting Remote Drive On Startup

Nov 16, 2010

I want to mount a remote drive on bootup. I'm using FC14 and remote machine is FreeBSD. I've written a shell script to mount it. The script contains only one line:
Code:
mount 192.168.1.33:/home/user7 /media/mc33

I've to run this script from superuser mode to mount the file system(it works). So to mount it at bootup, I added the shell script to my PATH (/home/me/bin) and added it to Menu->System->Preferences->Startup Applications. Well this doesn't work because the root privileges are not present. I tried fixing it by giving root privileges to my shell script
Code:
#chmod +s mount-mc33
but it made no difference.

Fedora Hardware :: USB Hard Drive Mounting At Startup?

Feb 14, 2011

I just moved from ubuntu to fedora 14 and I'm having an issue with a portable USB hard drive. When the hard drive is connected at startup it mounts at /dev/sda and my other 3 internal hard drives are mounted at /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd; of course this is an issue with my FSTAB file since i mount some of the partitions in the first hard drive (/dev/sda) at some special points in my file system, so i need to restart my computer and unplug the USB hard drive to get things working, however when i was working with ubuntu this didn't happen. I need that the USB hard drive mounts at /dev/sdd at startup so my FSTAB could work.

Ubuntu :: Mounting A Windows And Displaying The Windows Desktop

Mar 19, 2011

I have a windows PC which I would like to dual boot with Ubuntu. However, I have some very important documents scattered all over the "My Documents" folder. I don't want to move these to the linux partition manually because of the possibility of misplacing, deleting or otherwise doing something that could alter these files. (They happen to be notes that I make on Biology).

My plan was to mount the windows partitions on Ubuntu and then use symbolic links to navigate to the "My Docs" folder on the windows partition.

This is the main question: It is possible to mount hard drives and then make an existing folder on Ubuntu (for example the /home/user/Documents folder)point to the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder on windows? (By "point to" I mean something like a symbolic link. So, for example, by double clicking on the /home/user/Documents folder, the "My documents folder" on windows should be opened. )
