General :: Checking If Distro Running In Live Mode Using Terminal Based Tools?

May 10, 2011

I searched and found several solution but those are distro specific. I need to find out if distro is running in live mode (from CD, USB) instead it's installed on hdisk. The solution should be independent of distribution.

Ubuntu :: Running In Low-graphics Mode After Checking Drive For Errors

Oct 12, 2010

I have been running 10.4 with no problems for some time now. Today when I booted up it started checking the drive for errors, and I just left it to do its thing. I came back to this warning screen: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly.
I've tried all of these with no luck. When I select to run to low graphics mode, it says "Stand by one minute while the display restarts...OK".I select OK and then it gets stuck checking for battery state.I try to reconfigure the graphics, and nothing happens when I select any of the options on the next screen.

Is there any sure-fire way to identify whether the current Ubuntu system is running in Live mode or not? FYI, in grml, the /etc/grml_cd file only exit in Live mode file system; no such file if running from installed HD.

General :: Which DEB Based Distro To Use?

May 4, 2010

Ive been looking for a Debian based distro that is as close to Debian as can be with all the codecs and stuff already in it, also wireless. I would go with Debian, but TBH, I am not wanting to toy around with setting it up. Yes, there is Ubuntu which I have used for a while now, but I am wanting something closer to the source, as it were. Also, from what I understand, Ubuntu also changes things and they arent straight DEB anymore. Am I crazy? Is there anything like this? Or am I stuck with either Debian or Ubuntu?

General :: Why Can't Boot A Dell Poweredge 2950 With Any Tools Distro

Jun 15, 2011

I have been trying to do some testing with server cloning and partitioning and hit some walls. The server is question is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and the Distro's I have tried are :-

Clonezilla-live-1.2.8-46-i686
Parted Magic 6.2 & 6.2

The problem is a little strange is that the console appears to keep reporting either unreadable sectors on sr0 for clonezilla till SQUASHFS fails to load/locate and it panic's or in the case of Parted Magic.. copying files to RAM ..cp: read error: Input/output error

Mounting pmagic-6.2.sqfs... mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Mounting //sqfs_disk/pmagic-6.2.sqfs failed.

type "exit" to reboot the computer
bash-4.1#

Now the only problem here is I can't check the log's or dmesg the thing because it freezes the KVM and as I am offsite I have no spares with me Parted Magic does boot on a number of other servers like the R900 but will not boot at all here, I have tried safemode and disabling various other flag's but I must be missing something.

General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?

Dec 15, 2010

Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).

LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.

General :: How To Find Out What Your Distro Is Based On

Nov 28, 2010

I have been using Linux for quite a while and have gotten pretty good at it, but recently I started using Backtrack in a VM and realized I have no idea what it is based on. Then I got to thinking I have no idea what that even means. For example, OSX is based on Darwin right, but what does that mean? Ubuntu is another that is based on Debian, but I don't know what that means.

The reason I'm asking is because in order to get my screen resolution and networking right in Backtrack I need to know what it is based on so I can download the proper packages to install the VirtualBox guest additions, and I have no idea. Is there a way to get this information from the operating system? Maybe uname -a is giving me the info and I just don't know where to look in the output?

OpenSUSE :: Setup A Custom Home Server Running 11.3 64-bit In Terminal Mode?

Feb 5, 2011

I've recently setup a custom home server running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit in terminal mode. I've since successfully setup and configured it to act as an iSCSI target using the iscsitarget package and the corresponding kernel module, along with the YaST module for the configuration. Prior to setting up my hard drive accordingly, however, I noticed that when I ran 'zypper up' in a terminal I got the following:

Code:
pph-server:~ # zypper up
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

[Code]....

At the time I accepted, and found later that it removed the setup I had, meaning I had to start over. However when I ran YaST in a terminal it then wanted to re-install the iscsitarget package, which subsequently removed the tgt package, and so this continued for a bit. (Thankfully no actual data was stored on the target at this stage .) For the time being I've locked the iscsitarget package and the kernel module to prevent zypper from wanting to remove it and install tgt instead since I now have my target working as I want.

The question I have is why zypper was trying to remove iscsitarget and install tgt, and yet the corresponding YaST module was wanting to do the opposite. Is tgt considered a better option by the openSUSE developers, in some way, for setting up an iSCSI target? Is iscsitarget development/availability being ceased by them in favour of tgt? Is there something else I'm missing? Neither of these packages seems old to me: the latest version of iscsitarget was released on SourceForge last July, while tgt was only updated this month.

General :: Live Life In Text Based World

Jan 13, 2011

There's probably not too many Linux users how have their desktop Linux distros set to be console only as opposed to using an X server or a GUI. There's plenty of reasons to take this route and many ways to go about it, and I'll attempt to show you a (mostly) unbiased view on this choice, especially centered around the way I do it. Here's my setup: Dell Inspiron 1545, Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. I have Windows XP, Ubuntu 8.04, and my main OS: Debian Squeeze.

UBUNTU USERS!!!

Debian Squeeze is probably the best option for a Ubuntu convert. Making Ubuntu console based is kinda hard and not recommended by me because it's such a large OS, and living in a text only computer is generally a minimalist idea, so having such a bulky base is both memory intensive and kinda gross. Debian uses apt-get, so people who grew up in a Ubuntu environment should feel at home with the sudo commands and such........

General :: Best Distro For Learning Terminal?

I'm looking for the most pure linux terminal distro. I am trying to learn linux and I have Ubunutu 10.10 installed but I feel like it's not as pure as other distros, like Ubuntu 10.10 is different from the average terminal experience.

Maybe I am wrong about this, but certain things like the grub .lst file is now a .cfg file in Ubuntu, is this replicated across all linux, or is this unique to Ubuntu? Little things like this that make it difficult to learn. Are all the distros unique in this way?
